Wookies, & Rebels, & Droids... OH WHY?! The Anti-SWL in Disneyland Thread

Maybe I’m just not getting that from the videos and pics. It does look more desert chaparral to me and somewhat like new Big Thunder Trail.
It’s definitely deceiving. Most of the pics you see online are in this red area, mine included, and has very little to no vegetation. The rest might as well be Endor once the trees grow in

They blend together so well that you don’t even care that you can stand at the end of Main St, see the Matterhorn, Tomorrowland, the Fronteirland and Adventureland entrances and even parts of Fantasyland all at once depending on which way you’re standing.

Because you're in the hub.. not Main Street.

You may want to go back and look at where the early pathways were too ;)

This is my pre-visit problems with GE: In photos, it looks like a garbage dump. I know why they did it, and the fact that the SW Universe has always looked "lived in" has always been one of the few things I actually like about the franchise. This is all before seeing it live, and I might feel differently when I actually visit, but I would actually have preferred a more pleasing-looking SW tribute land with several thrilling rides than an attempt to create a full-size SW fantasy location. When it comes right down to it, the world of SW is a pretty crappy place to live.

Man... I bet you hate the Africa section of DAK. Joe R's baby....

Keep in mind that a Star Wars themed area area was mandated for both coasts when Disney bought Lucasfilm

Where did you come up with that?

The theme parks were not even the top of the priory list when the acquisition closed... that's why we had cable and multiple movies and production pipelines of film and tv before any theme park plans were finalized

Thanks for the breakdown! This helps. Looking forward to seeing it in person. What time slot were you?

No, AK’s Africa is a re-creation of a real place to showcase the real setting in which you’d find real natural wonders. It’s educational and full of great folk art.

GE is a make believe fantasy world that looks like a dump. I have a feeling Disney might regret going that route once the novelty wears off.

Keep in mind that a Star Wars themed area area was mandated for both coasts when Disney bought Lucasfilm. While the the land’s designers porobaby did consider its potential DL implementation first given the space limitations of that park, at no point was it going to be a one park deal. https://ew.com/article/2014/08/05/disney-theme-parks-star-wars/

Totally! But there were two concurrent projects under development, eventually TDO just cancelled their version and opted to utilize a slightly modified version of Disneyland’s project in the old backlot plot.

Up until construction walls went up our insiders still thought the echo lake site and building re-utilization was a go.

I guess all of which is to say if Florida didn’t build SW:GE whatsoever it probably wouldn’t have looked all too different in DL.

No prob! I was 2-6pm, checked in a little late waiting for a friend to head over from Mickey and Friends. We ate and checked out the land, then rode the Falcon. It was virtually a walk on status towards the end of our slot so I made sure to do all the jobs.

The Cantina filled up all its slots by 2:20 so I didn’t see that, and I forgot about the lightsaber/droid thing lol felt like a theme park noob. I’m content with my UltraSabers lightsaber so I won’t be buying one in the land, be cool to check it out eventually if you’re allowed to go through without buying tho.

It’s truly a travesty that I liked the green milk over the blue. Green is a little fruity, they told us guava. I think blue was coconut water and something else. Still not sure if they both use that water. The milks and food items felt overpriced, even for Disneyland, compared to the portions you get. Butterbeer comes in a bigger cup and tastes a lot better tbh. As much as it hurts to say that haha

And what in another setting would be considered run down junk or trash....

It’s one thing to say it doesn’t feel convincing to you (GE)... but to hang it on garbage and what is “real” or not when talking about a fictional universe... is funny. Somehow people keep forgetting Disney settings are not realistic at all. They are sanitized, romanticized versions.

Tell me when and where Disney has gone out of their way to make you connect SWL and Disneyland.

And that’s the fake rule you and others keep citing and mis applying the use of weenies and the hub to try to justify that the lands need sightline intrusions to “connect” things. Seeing the matters horn from west side is not weenie design or “connecting things”... it’s compromise.

Lands do not all weenies to draw to their entrance... lands do not all visual intrusions. Transitions more than not are to serve their localized purpose... not create some common Disneyland unity. The hub is a special case and design... that in itself has been altered radically since it’s original design due to the other connection paths that have been added... and of course the expansion of activities in the hub itself.

You're intentionally misrepresenting what myself and others are saying. All we're doing is saying ways that we've noticed WDI's approach has differed from what's been done at Disneyland in the past. We know there aren't hard rules that apply to Disneyland- we're just trying to express why we think Galaxy's Edge is out of place inside Disneyland, which is literally the point of this thread. I also think discussing the things Galaxy's Edge has done well and ways it could be improved is worthwhile.

In the case of Galaxy's Edge, the way the transitions are done, the scale/design of the buildings, the single IP, and the attraction all feature major departures from what Disneyland has done before... which was literally the point of the land. If it doesn't bother you, that's excellent- you have a few new attractions and a wonderfully themed area to enjoy now.
