Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

Wednesday we went to Monschau. It's less than an hour from aachen and we had looked up things to do in the area and this town just looked so picturesque. On their website, they had a couple of tours, and it mentioned a glass blower, which A had been fascinated with in DLP a few years ago, so we thought it was worth checking out. We went to a breakfast buffet in Aachen that DH and I went to in September, but it wasn't worth it this time with the kids. They didn't have nearly the selection they did last time, because of Covid, and A ate 2 mini-croissants and that was it. E ate a sweet role and a couple of mini croissants and some bacon, but that was it. I couldn't get my usual yoghurt with oats this time, they only had scrambled eggs, and not as many bread selections, no pastries. You each get a small glass of OJ and that's it....no refills, and they had nothing else besides coffee and tea. I ordered a cold milk and they brought me a tea cup of room temp milk....last time I ordered milk and they brought me steamed milk. Apparently Germans don't drink milk? And the buffet is at the top of a staircase with the cash register directly across from the stairs and you have to turn left to get to the dining room, but the kitchen is to the right. So every time they bring new food out, they have to squeaze in between the cash register and the staircase, and anyone paying, has to stand right there, in the way. We got chewed out for being in the way when we went to pay....yeah....where else are we supposed to stand? If you put the cash register in the way, people are going to be in the way when they pay. You want them to stand somewhere else, move the cash register! It was just...ugh. So we decided not to go there Thursday morning as planned.

Monschau....it's a bit hard to get to. It's in a sort of valley, and our GPS sent us through an area that is closed to through traffic, but we made it.
From the parking lot.

Just various places in town

I wanted to walk up to that castle, but A hates heights, and my hip doesn't do well with a lot of hiking, so we contented ourselves with just walking through town. We stopped at a little restaurant for some lunch and something cold to drink. This is taken from our table.

E and I shared this....it was homemade dumplings with chanterelle mushrooms and a cream sauce. I thought the mushrooms were going to be IN the dumplings...like a ravioli. The dumplings looked like little patties of pork. It was ok, but not really what I was expecting. And then we ordered Apple Strudel with vanilla ice cream. A had some fries and M was still full from breakfast, so he only got the apple strudel.

After lunch we walked up to the glass blowing place. It was really warm in there with the furnaces, and we had to keep our masks on, but it was really cool to watch. I didn't take any pictures of the demonstration. There were no signs saying it was not allowed, but since I couldn't ask the guy's permission, I thought it best not to. But here are some pictures of pieces.

118011507_2660911324161419_7164508873574867989_n.jpg118352072_1301756946822514_7944849407005491381_n.jpg

I should have taken more, but my phone keeps telling me it can't back up my photos because I don't have any space, so I didn't want to fill up more of a bunch of glass. But they had some really cool stuff. I ended up buying this twirly thing to hang in front of my window. I wanted one that was just glass, but it was $150 bucks and I wasn't sure how I would get it home or where I would hang it. Kind of like this, but longer and with a couple of the bubble type things...

Anyway, I settled for one that was more like a wire cage with a glass ball in it. It's still in the bubble wrap, so I haven't taken a picture of it yet, but it's sort of like this:

Then we walked back into town for some dinner. We had planned on going to a restaurant we saw as we walked through town, because it had chicken nuggets and fries as well as typical German fare like schnitzels and steaks. DH wanted a big schnitzel, and E wanted appel strudel with vanilla sauce....we could get all of that at this restaurant, but when we got there, they said they were full for the whole evening. So we walked back to this little square where there were several terrace restaurants and found one that had both schnitzel and appel strudel, and they had steaks and some pastas. So we went there.

A kept his facemask on, I think because of wasps? Or maybe he just forgot to take it off.

E and I decided to share a steak and a pasta. DH ordered his schnitzel, and then I went to order the steak and the waiter informed us they had no steaks. Well why didn't you tell us that when you brought us the menus, moron?? So E and I both ordered the pasta. I know I took a picture, but it appears to have been deleted from my phone, or it's the picture that somehow doesn't show anything but white. The file is corrupted or something. It wasn't fantastic. The waiter forgot to bring condiments for M's schnitzel and fries, and he said it wasn't very good. We ordered the apple strudel, but I ended up just eating the filling out of mine. The crust was this thick, cakey thing that tasted like dish soap. NASTY. The wasps loved it though!

One fell in the chocolate syrup and got stuck and spent the next 15 minutes trying to extricate himself and get all the excess off his legs and back side.

When we were done, we left Monschau and headed for the nearest McDonalds for A, and got apple pie that was infinitely better than that strudel. When a McDonalds $1.50 pastry is better than your $8 version, you should consider another profession! But that was really the only downside of the day. If we ever go back, we'll make reservations at the restaurant of our choice and it wont be Hotel zum Stern.

Thursday morning, we left the kids to sleep since they didn't want breakfast, and we went to the Hotel buffet. It was...edible. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, yoghurt, cheese and meat slices, and some breads. Nothing spectacular, but it was convenient. Then we packed up, checked out, and headed to Valkenburg. We wanted to see the Velvet Cave, but tickets aren't available online for the cave part, only for the ruins. So we figured as long as we got there not too long after opening, we'd be fine. We were wrong. They were sold out for the day. We had gotten tickets for the ruin online the night before, so we just did that.

It dates back to something like 1049 or something like that...I should have taken a picture of the sign. It was just so hot outside and I was worried about burning, even though I had applied sunscreen twice. I did burn a bit, but not too badly. It was really cool. The stone for the castle was taken from the cave underneath. We'll have to go back some time to see the cave.

After getting something to drink, we got back in the car and headed to Roermond for an early dinner. Our plan was to eat at Wagamama, which has become a favorite, but we don't have one near us, and then head to Arcen where the castle gardens were open until 9 that night. Wagamama is in the outlet mall there...it was so busy!! But you had to wear masks. They had the entire perimiter blocked off and there were only 2 entrance points, one on each and, and when you went in, they had two lines: one for if you already had a mask, and one for if you needed to buy one. It's like the outlets in Orlando, where it's a strip mall set up, not a covered indoor mall. But you had to wear masks everywhere, even outside.

We went to McDonalds for A, then went to Wagamama for us.

E and I both had the Soba terriyaki with steak.

118346545_307830963998810_9159367084368493012_n.jpg

M had the Katsu chicken curry, which was also really delicious, but I didn't get a picture of that one. We weren't hungry enough for appetizers or dessert. Last time we got Gyoza and edamame to start....I had never tried edamame....is it supposed to be raw? And you just eat the beans inside, not the outside? I was not impressed with that, but the gyoza was good. Last time we also got the ramen, but we liked the soba better, so this time E and I just got that. I think next time I'll get the Katsu....it was really good. Last time, we got several desserts. M got some lemongrass sorbet...he loved it, I didn't. I got "sesame salted caramel" which turned out to be caramel flavored ice cream. It was ok, but if I'm having dessert, I want it to be decadent and rich...ice cream just doesn't usually do it for me. But it didn't say it was ice cream on the menu. And E got a belgian chocolate thing that was a total win....we ordered more of it because it was so good. But they didn't have the lemongrass sorbet at this one, (nor the salted caramel, but we wouldn't have gotten that again anyway) and we were all really full, so we decided against dessert.

We were driving towards Arcen, and my husband asked how badly E and I wanted to see the castle gardens, which is code for "I don't really want to do this. Do I have to?" A was "bored" and it was still a couple of hours drive home. E's feet were hurting, and I didn't want to force her, even though I wanted to go, so I said I'd leave it up to her....possibly a mistake, because she hates to make anyone else unhappy and will sacrifice her own happiness for whatever someone else wants, and since it was obvious the boys didn't want to go, she said "Well, I would kind of like to see it, but I don't want to make you guys do it if you don't want to..." and DH said "yeah....it's been a long day...I mean, if you really want to go, I'll take you, but it's not really something I need to see, and we can always come some other time." So E agreed to skip it. I hope we will eventually make it back, and we did see a lot of cool stuff.

And that's it.

@Songbird76 , been wondering where you've been hiding recently. Now, we all know!! Looks like a very interesting vacation, and I like the food pictures, too! :)
Well, first a book I've been waiting for for about 10 years finally came out, so I read it, then I read it again, because I rushed through the first time. And we had a heatwave that lasted about 3 weeks and we have no AC here, so I couldn't stand to be on my computer any longer than it takes to check email. So I got out my Wyoming guidebook and started planning our trip for (hopefully) next Summer. And then we decided to take this mini trip. So that's where I was. Most of it was hiding from the heat, though. When it's up in the 90s with high humidity and no AC for 3 weeks straight, I just can't do much. We ordered in food or made things that didn't need to cook really. I only ran my dryer at night. We'd wait for the temp inside to be the same as it was outside, then open up all the doors and windows and turn the fans on, but even at its coolest it was around 80 degrees in the house. Well....it still is. Today is the coolest day we've had for a month at 77 degrees, but my house hasn't even had time to cool down. Yesterday we were at 86 outside, so my house is still 80 inside. It's hotter inside today than it is outside. But there's at least a nice breeze blowing through the window, so I can stand it.

I’m fascinated by glass blowing. There’s a place not too far from my house that does classes. It’s kinda pricey but I was about to sign up right before covid shut everything down. I’m not sure if they are back to doing classes but I don’t think I could participate with a mask on so I’m going to wait.

Great photos, @Songbird76

Monschau looks so pleasant.
It's a beautiful place to visit! I highly recommend it if you are ever in the vicinity. I wouldn't want to live there, though...for one, the streets are TINY...it would be impossible to drive anywhere. Also, most of the houses we saw were up steep inclines with long steep stairs to get to them....not very accessible, and there didn't seem to be any way to drive up to them, so I wonder how people get groceries, etc. There must have been drives in back behind the houses that we couldn't see or something. But for a day or two to walk around and site see, you couldn't ask for a prettier place!!

It was really cool to watch. Seeing how he shaped things, and the colors all looked the same until he started cooling it down a little. We watched him make 2 different vases in different colors and until he was done with the 2nd one, I thought he was making identical ones. It's a really lengthy process...I don't think I'd have the patience. Plus, it's not an exact art...you can't place the different colors in the shapes and places that you want them. It might not turn out exactly as you imagined it...that would be frustrating for me. But it's so cool to watch someone else do it. :D

Love watching the artists that create masterpieces in glass blowing. I'm mesmerized watching the process. A number of years ago, we went to the Simon Pearce flagship mill store (restaurant, store, tours, etc. -- really nice location beside the Ottauquechee River and falls) up in Quechee, Vermont.

They had public tours, and we spent quite a while watching the glass blowing. (Unfortunately, the public tours are discontinued, due to Covid.) The restaurant had excellent food, by the way; they've won some awards. Gets really busy up there during summer and fall seasons, in particular.

There’s a glass blower in one of the stores in Disney Springs. We watched him for over an hour. He created an Oswald figure and it was just awesome to watch.

We watched the one in DLP on main street for over an hour, too. I think A was 9 or 10 then? He was absolutely mesmerized. I had let my husband have the morning to himself to do roller coasters and stuff and I took the kids so he didn't have to worry about making us wait while he was in lines, etc. So we were walking down mainstreet and stopped in to the shop and this woman was blowing glass...small scale stuff....she was making the wand shafts for the Crystal wand shop in the castle. If you've never been there, it's a whole experience....you choose your wand and the colors you want and there's a whole show around making your wand. But they actually make the shaft tubes on main street, with all the ornamentation like flowers or fairy wings, and they ship them up to the castle to use for the wand experience. I asked A if he was ready to move on yet, but he was so enthralled we just stayed there until my husband was done with all his rides and ready to meet back up.

It seems to be - I couldn’t remember the name last night but google helped me:
I remember it as the building where guest services used to be located. It also housed the place where they made T'shirts to order. I remember it being laid out like a flea market. It led to the glass blowing area followed by a small store. I could be remembering it incorrectly because it has to be at least 25 years since I saw it.
