Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

I know from The People’s Court, that vacation home rentals on Fire Island are big bucks!
Oh they are!! The town of Fire Island is only accessible by ferry or boat - no cars. So when you get there via water you have to carry or cart all of your belongings to your destination. The vacation rentals are particularly coveted because everyone just walks to the beach and the bars. There's no driving involved. So it's a quaint little way to spend the summer.

There are a total of 4 parking fields at Robert Moses (aptly named 2, 3, 4 & 5). We got there around 12 and Fields 4 & 5, the more desirable of the locations due to the proximity to the town of Fire Island, were full. We parked in Field 2 and one side of the lot was full but they had cones blocking off every other parking space. Below is an aerial view of the full area - we parked in the bottom lot on the left side. Since all of Fire Island is part of the barrier beaches protecting Long Island, you have to take that bridge pictured to get there. I have some photos I took the last time we flew in, I'll see if I can find them on my phone.

Holy cow. That's a lotta stretch of beach there!! :jawdrop:

Question: Four lots -- 2, 3, 4 and 5. (Did Lot # 1 erode into the ocean, at one point in time?!) :p

Another question: So, you guys have these cool beaches on a long island. There are other beaches, too, right? When I was a kid, my family visited N.Y., and I remember we went to Coney Island -- we went on some rides and walked around, but isn't there also a public beach as well?

There’s beaches all along the north and south shores. The north shore beaches are rocky and on the Long Island Sound which is generally calm and there are sand bars you can walk out to. The south shore beaches are the Atlantic (and some inlets that are on different bays. The main south shore beaches are Smiths Point, Robert Moses and Jones Beach (there’s an outdoor amphitheater there that’s awesome to see concerts) and then the Rockaways and Cooney Island with the amusement park. A lot of the North shore beaches are private. It’s weird there are beaches everywhere and some summers we never even go. They can be crowded and sometimes the water is mucky or cold.

Never realized how many beaches are spread out there. I can imagine with the NY and NJ populations, they must get really crowded in the summer. (I haven't been to a beach here in probably 10 years or more.)

I won’t go on the weekend or if it’s a heat wave. It gets crazy crowded. The calmer North shore beaches are usually less crowded since they are rocky and don’t have waves. It’s really nice to go in the evening and just relax in the calm.

She is sleeping so the answer will have to wait....but it could be just the circumstance that you suggest @NYwdwfan
Yet many times I've seen her watch cooking tutorial videos. She'll study those videos and then memorize them and recreate it accurately. Really I'm impressed with her. Yet @Songbird76 even if my wife had this recipe in a written form, it might be in her original language of Bahasa (Indonesia). Additionally, it might include Asian ingredients that she gets here when I take her an hour from our home to special Asian Supermarkets. You might not have access to those ingredients.
Edit: Hours later I have brought this post back up because my wife said: #1 There are plenty of Indonesian nationals living in the Netherlands.
#2 You will likely have access to the ingredients because of that. (Later in the thread you'll see I posted the video she used to learn how to make it....it has English subtitles)
#3 My wife said that she does not use every ingredient mentioned. You can indeed use your judgement and omit a couple of them.
Thank you! And thank her for me! Yes, we have a lot of Asian Supermarkets here. My friend from Malaysia works in one, and I have a friend from Indonesia who has her own restaurant. She taught us how to make lumpias.....soooooo good. Anyway, I should be fine on getting ingredients here.

Before I catch up, I thought I'd share a few pictures from our short trip down South. We left Monday afternoon (I had a doctor appt. in the morning for my diabetis) and came home Thursday. We stayed in Aachen, Germany, which is right across the border and we visited the town of Monschau, which was amazing! So quaint and beautiful and there's a glass blower who does demonstrations, etc. We also visited the Roman bath house in Heerlen, the Netherlands, and we visited the ruins of a castle in Valkenburg, Netherlands on our way home. So just a short trip to get away and do something fun. Masks were required everywhere inside in Germany, and everywhere we went we had to fill in contact info and do a health check in case of covid. You can thank my daughter for the food pictures, because I would never remember if she didn't remind me every time food was brought to the table.

The first night was the Three Country Point, where Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands all meet. It was about 20 minutes from our hotel. There is an obervatory tower there, and there was a maze you could go through....man it took us a while, but we got there.

We went back to Aachen and found a little Italian restaurant. It worked well for us that we eat around 5:30 or 6pm, because Germans typically eat much later and it was no problem to get a table there. We were the only guests until we were almost ready to leave.

E and I shared the Mushrooms with gorgonzola cheese, and we also shared a pasta with a mushroom cream sauce and a steak with gorgonzola cream sauce. Everything was really good, but we LOVED the pasta.

They gave us free bread, which A ate an entire basket himself...he doesn't really eat much besides bread or chicken nuggets and fries, so we had actually taken him to McDonalds before we ate. They brought us the basket and some things to put on the bread like atrichoke hearts, dried tomatoes, peppers (only DH ate that) and we had to order another basket for A because he loved the bread. And my husband ordered a steak with pepper sauce.

For desert, E and I shared a Tartufo...it was chocolate ice cream with vanilla and nuts or something? It tasted like Ferrero Rocher in ice cream form. And my husband got Tiramisu. A just had some vanilla ice cream.

Day 2, we wandered around Aachen. DH and I went there in September, so I didn't take any pictures this time, and we didn't really go in anywhere except E and I walked around the Cathedral, and we went to the City Hall, but that was it. Then in the afternoon we went to Heerlen to this Roman bath. We went there in September, too, so I didn't take any pictures, but I do have some from our first trip. It's a bit different now. They were still doing construction on the pathways when we were there, and they have added a few new things, etc. So the pictures aren't entirely accurate. You can actually walk around the lower level now and see everything up close.

Here's the Cathedral, as seen from the upper floor of the City Hall. The stuff in the town square wasn't there this time...that was just there for Oktoberfest last time.

We didn't bother to go into the treasury this time. DH and I did that last time, and while it was neat for US to see, we knew A would be bored. E might like it, but she didn't want to cause any trouble, and A was already complaining that he was bored, and that was after just getting some breakfast and seeing the city hall. We didn't go to the Roman bath house until the afternoon. We did stop and listen to a very cool string quartet outside the Cathedral for a bit. I loved what they were doing...it was a classic string quartet, but they were playing more modern music. Bohemian Rhapsody, the theme from Last of the Mohicans, Shape of You, Despicito, etc. It was cool, because it's a great way to get kids into playing an instrument. So many kids associate stringed instruments with stuffy music that they find boring. This was a good way to show them that you can also play stuff you LIKE and think is cool. Once they start playing, they get exposed to all different genres. I thought it was a pretty amazing approach, just out on the street where everyone can listen. My kids were both enthralled.

After the Roman baths, we went in search of food. We found a Tapas restaurant that ended up being pretty good. I didn't take pictures of the food we got....you order several things per round and they bring it when it's done. It's not conducive to good picture taking, and it's not really spectacular looking for the most part. It's stuff like a couple of spare ribs, or half an ear of corn, or a bowl of olives, a little dish of mushrooms in a garlic marinade, etc. But here is the dessert plate: Crema catalana (like creme brulee), lava cake for A, churros, and ice cream, and profiteroles. E and I shared the churros and the profiteroles, but each had our own crema catalana. DH ate a crema catalana, a tiramisu, and the ice cream.
