When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
I'm pretty much with ya for the most part. Disney needs to get past their business model for Epcot, doing nothing unless they find a sponsor to foot the bill. 'Til then it just deteriorates or gets cheap overlays.
I've said this before over in N & R - Disney HAS sponsors footing the bills - ON EVERY SINGLE ATTRACTION.
It's US, the paying Customer.

This mindset irks the heck out of me.

I'm still more disappointed by the lack of.. well... sensitivity to culture, education..etc..
sported by some people in that thread. People who cant differentiate "pop culture" created by a third party vs real country culture.

Next they're gonna say that Donald with a hat is the epitome of the Mexican culture :banghead:
It's not?
Too bad I don't know anyone of Mexican heritage I could ask.

Oh dear . . . he may be on to something there. They do have unique, quality clothing in that nice shop. Prices may be a little above my puny budget, but that's not the point. There's nothing wrong with ogling beautiful things and gaining an appreciation of nice styles from another country. Epcot, after all, is supposed to be a learning experience on many different levels. :banghead:
The same thing happened to Main Street USA. I can't believe the wonderful individual shops that have disappeared, simply to be replaced by one ginormous shop extending the whole block. :(

Out of curiosity, I looked up the names of all the WDW Main Street USA shops that have closed (for whatever reasons). Some opened up as far back as 1971. (There might be a few missing from the list below, but only in the sense that some stores "morphed" into the newer (mall as I call it . . .) design that is there now.

New Century Clock Shop (closed 1986) - (Elgin watches & clocks)
Greenhouse (closed 1985) - (flowers and other plants)
Hallmark Card Shop (closed 1985) - (cards, stationery, gift wrap, party items)
Tobacconist (closed 1985) - (tobacco products)
Main Street Stationers (closed 1989) - (cards, stationery, accessories)
Main Street bookstore (closed 1995) - (cards, stationery and writing accessories, books)
House of Magic (closed 1995) - (magic books, masks, puzzles, books and gags)
Cup N' Saucer (closed 1986) - (fine china, gifts)
Wonderland of Wax (closed 1981) - (candles)
Holiday Corner (closed 1986) - (Christmas decorations all year round)
Hospitality Home (closed 1992) - (nothing for sale--housed the Walt Disney Store atraction)
Disneyana Collectibles (closed 1998) - (general Disney merchandise)
Market House (closed 2007) - (jams, jellies, old fashioned candies and cigars)
The Main Street Fire Station (closed 2011) - (firemen-related merchandise & Disney souvenirs)

My first two trips to WDW were in 1991 and again in 1992; so I never got to experience many of the shops you have listed. :(

I especially remember the House of Magic though. My dad insisted we go there in '91 to pick him up a new mask. We couldn't wait to return there in '92 for another.

By the way, the mask we bought him is the one he wore to our wedding. Pics to follow later when I can access my phone, in case you don't recall seeing it.

Kidlets are at work doing some overtime, and I am headed back to bed. Strangely, three hours sleep isn't cutting it. Later ....

House of Magic was a very unique shop and really fun! I'd love to see the pictures at some point, at your convenience. (Note: I also updated my thread above, showing the merchandise sold in each of those shops, as I thought it might be a helpful reference to people.)

My regret was that somehow, I never realized that the Main Street Fire Station was actually open and had neat firemen-related merchandise inside there. I think I thought that maybe the Fire Station was just a building "front" (like a stage set in Hollywood, for example) to add to the charm of Main Street. Oh shucks, I missed it.

I never realized it either! I guess they should have made it more obvious - it was kinda tucked away in the corner! I would walk out of that last big store on that side of Main Street and then pretty much cut across the circle going straight towards the exit...

We have a dragon mask (more like a head) that we purchased there a long time ago. It's still worn at Halloween from time to time. My husband went through a magician phase in his childhood, so we always stopped in and sometimes picked up a magic trick.

I purchased several unique items over the years, but now it's all generic stuff. I haven't purchased anything (except food & drink) on my last few trips.

One of my favorite photos is of my daughter (around age 4) sitting in the fire engine.

Friends, I just found the best mayor EVER for any city! Watch this video and listen to what the mayor of Las Vegas has to say! I LOVE her. I'm in love with her words... Well, you know what I mean...

Unfortunately, when you read the whole article you discover that the existing monorail (privately funded) is bankrupt, and investors lost money. The Mayor wants the expansion to be 80% privately funded - going to be hard to get investors.

I've seen both of the stage versions when they came to Baltimore. Twice on each. Love the Broadway soundtracks to both. The voices are amazing and I love the additional music. They tell so much about these characters through music. I'm very much hoping that the live film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast with the music from the stage show gets made.

In addition to the karaoke, I've almost learned "Let It Go" on the piano (Got Vuelie). Almost. That section after the second chorus is...ugh. The other day I also sat down and tried "Reindeers are Better than People". Short, simple, I'll have it in a week. Started working on "Do You Want to Build a Snowman". That one's kind of tricky, but I think it's just a matter of getting it to click in my brain. The piano no one minds unless they're trying to watch TV. The karaoke...my brother doesn't mind.
I got rid of my piano a few years ago. I used it as a release more than for enjoyment. If I was stressed I'd pick a song that required pounding the keys. That is the only time I miss it.

In other news, I'm still disgusted.

Seems people again are attacking my "reading comprehension" instead of tackling my opinion.
It almost feels like when other posters feel cornered, they have to get rely on cheap tactics to disregard other people's opinions and attacking them personally.

also known as "Danth's law"(or Parker's law).

This was very interesting reading (I wanted to read the text first, before watching the video); and the video showed a sleek-looking monorail system. I just don't understand why there is always financial difficulty surrounding the either the expansion of, or new developments, of monorails. Doesn't seem to matter where they're located; this always seems to be the major hurdle. I really like monorails, and especially for states with mild winters such as Florida and Nevada, I'm surprised they haven't exactly been embraced. Thanks for sharing that news clip, regardless. :)

I think that's why (your phrase above). Sometimes, people feel insecure. Other times, their opinion may indeed be the correct one; yet, they express themselves in an unfavorable light. My own opinion as a member, reading through various threads for over a year now, can be summed up in one word: passion. A lot of people care so much about a particular Disney subject, that they sometimes lose sight of the friendly culture that is supposed to permeate throughout the forums.

We're all a group of fans, and we want to share information with one another. Disagreements (and sometimes misinterpretations) are bound to happen on occasion; but heck, opinions should always be presented in a respectful manner. In your case, I know you post often up in the major threads. Members who frequent those threads quite a bit, know that you have much to contribute, and appreciate your thoughts, even when they might differ from their own. Most people treat the WDW Magic forums like a community of friends, so don't lose heart. :)
