It would be best, in my opinion, to take away everyone's individual tally.

Of course, it would be even better to keep the tallies, and have the number of likes be a measure the person's credibility. But unfortunately, people who never post anything constructive, informative, or funny would keep climbing the lists somehow.
I'm guessing you are talking about me. Of which, well, I'm sorry all of you HATE me all the sudden. Oh well, C'est Le Vie. I have never asked to be given likes to reach a higher number (sound familiar anyone?) nor said "I'll do anything for likes." (Ring a bell?) It's such a waste of time and energy to bicker about it.

Maybe Steve should take away ALL the likes in ChitChat again (that would also include the Saget thraed where a majority of the likes you all have gotten) and people will stop griping. It's petty. Did anyone really think they were going to Fiji with them? But, just like others, I will carry on here on my favorite website like always. Still so sorry some of you decided we can't be friends anymore.

It was like a Seinfeld episode. I was on my iPod touch and it asked me to log in. I logged in. Then I tried to come here. It asked me to sign in again. Then it told me that I was already signed in. So I reset the Wifi and it asked me to sign in again. I signed in and again tried to return to this site. About three minutes later, the Wifi booted me off. So I switched to my tablet. It asked me to sign in. I signed in. And then tried to come here. The sign in screen reappeared. And I signed in again. And it told me I was already signed in. :banghead: I think I got it now

That's weird. Don't sign off, you'll never get back on.

The likes are no more than that - you like what was posted. Maybe because you agree with the sentiment, maybe because you appreciated the information, maybe because it made you laugh, or was cute, or it elicited a nice memory, maybe you feel that someone needs a pat on the back, or encouragement, or a shoulder to cry on. Or maybe it's because a poster said something you wish you could say. ;)

There are 100 different reasons to "like" a post, and it has nothing to do with credibility, authority (Steve, Eeyore & I have far fewer likes and posts than many) or any other measurement. It just means that other posters have liked what you posted - for a variety of reasons.

No, I was not referring to anyone in particular. I said "would keep climbing the lists", and I never specified that it already happens. :)

Very true. Might I suggest taking away the "most liked", "most posts", etc. lists then? It seems to make it into more of a competition than it was before between some people.

If I may, I'd like to share my own perspective on the "like" button. First of all, I respect your opinion and am glad you told us. My own interpretation of the like button has always been either for something that I really liked, or just that I wanted to acknowledge your post (as in, thank you for posting). Apparently, people interpret things differently, and this is my own understanding.

I've given this a lot of thought. Perhaps a compromise might be for the moderators to add an additional button such as maybe a simple checkmark (I don't have a picture, but just a general checkmark), and maybe that could be used as an "acknowledgement" button (for people like myself, that care to use it).

I've been a forum member now for over a year. This is the first and only forum I've ever joined. I have followed the lead from others in liking many posts for various reasons, because that's what I thought we were supposed to do. And, speaking for myself here, I've certainly never, ever, asked or hinted to anyone, for any "likes" as that was the least important thing for me, personally. The happiness I have received from these forums is the great information sharing, humorous posts, and a sense of community and fellowship from my fellow members.
or more like an "agree button" and a "like button"

agree when you have the similar opinion.. or like when you love something.

I've been going through old papers, and came across an article from 1962 talking about Cleveland's SOS program. Sabin Oral Sunday - thousands lined up to receive polio vaccine - one dose per month X3 doses given every Sunday May - August. $&1/2 million doses were given - at ballparks, schools, fire stations, even camps. 90% of the residents received vaccinations. It was so effective because it could be given orally (rather than by injection) and also promoted intestinal immunity, preventing spreading the virus via waste matter.

I had every type of polio virus there was - shots, by "gun" (pneumatic high pressure injection) and sugar cube. It's hard to describe the fear this virus instilled - a HS friend's mother literally dropped while hanging clothes in the backyard, and was paralyzed for the rest of her life. She was on a chest compression respirator for the rest of her life - need to go back into the iron lung from time to time. She died in 1980. I knew neighbors/classmates who used leg braces and crutches.
What still scares me:
Tthere are so many people that think vaccines, are some sort of conspiracy by the gov or health authorities.
And byrefusing the vaccines... they end endangering a lot of people and their families.

I particularly hate the excuse of "00.3% probability a child will develop autism, thus the vaccine is dangerous".

(edited for typos and clarification... I am watching the champions league games)

I haven't entered into this topic, officially, and I don't want to do so now. I can say that it is a good feeling to get likes, but, please everyone... this isn't about quantity. More importantly, there is no super jackpot at the end. We all get the same prize whether or not we have a million "likes" or just one. That would be nothing. There isn't even a mention for anything over a small number when you start out on the board.

My advice, just have fun with it. Do what you want to do because it really doesn't matter. If you want to like something because it struck you as funny, serious, spot on or even close to how you feel about things, then do it. If you don't feel anything and it is just another post to you... don't like it. It doesn't matter one way or the other.

I have an ego as well as everyone and I like to see that people enjoy, in whatever degree that they do, what I post here. (except Canadian of course, cause you can't trust them) I'd hate to see that go away, but, I also don't want to put too much emphasis on the importance of getting them. Just keep on keeping on! Thanks... now we can all go back to the true reason for the existence of this thraed and that would be the organized bashing of Canadians, eh!

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
So, changing the topic ....

Two days ago, it was 32 degrees (just under 90); the hottest day of the summer.
Yesterday, back down to a high of 23 (73).
And today, we MIGHT reach a high of 21 (<70).

Personally, I think we were owed a much better summer, considering the winter we endured.

With all you've been through, needles and shots are probably no big thing. :)

I think the whole issues with "Likes" right now is because there are lots of posters on this site who put a lot of work and research into their posts, who have a history of being able to get great inside info, and who devote lots of time in helping answer questions in great detail. Some considered that the like board was a good way to promote these users and let them know that they are well regarded here. Being able to boost your likes just by going in Words of Wisdom, however, kind of makes it hard to use the like leader board for that purpose. Trying to alter the way people use the like button to make it serve that purpose is obviously not going to work.

I think maybe a "Top Contributor" badge for those who have proven to be important members of the forum would probably be a better solution to solve this. I know this is probably not the place to throw suggestions at the mods, and there are probably a billion reasons why my suggestion is a bad idea. But this is where it is being discussed so here is where I posted it.
