We have had an abundance of squirrels the last few springs along with bunnies, skunks, raccoon and possum. They say with the extreme sub zero temps we have had there will be less of them all this spring. What will we discover when the 5 foot snow mounds melt?

You know that squirrels are nothing more than rats with bushy tails....Did you know that there are some 285 species of squirrel? Yup. That one is called the Red squirrel. The ones that I would call squirrel (I looked at that and said, "What the heck is that?) are the Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).

And the fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) is the most common squirrel in North America

I believe the picture of the squirrel you have is a Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). They are common in Europe, though in some parts, their numbers are decreasing thanks to habitat loss and the introduction of the Eastern Grey squirrel.

Yup, sanity is definitely no fun
I've always liked squirrels. They are fun to watch and have never caused any damage to our property. Chipmunks on the other hand...You know that squirrels are nothing more than rats with bushy tails....
I thought seagulls were rats with wings...You know that squirrels are nothing more than rats with bushy tails....
They do massive damage to plants.I've always liked squirrels. They are fun to watch and have never caused any damage to our property. Chipmunks on the other hand...
The eastern grey squirrel doesn't eat the type of plants we grow around here. They eat nuts, berries, tree bark, seeds, and fungi. They are mainly nuisances to the bird feeder, which we've actually fixed. Now they sit at the bottom and wait for the birds to drop. The rabbits and the deer eat the plants. Some of the other squirrel species eat flowers and such. They do massive damage to plants.

Please tell that to the squirrels around here. They seem to love to dig up most plants and crops for the roots. The eastern grey squirrel doesn't eat the type of plants we grow around here. Catching up again...
I was there when that was added. And lest anyone forget, I single-handedly came up with the idea of spoilers inside spoilers. (Hey, I have to claim the idea for something on this site; all the good ones are being taken quickly. Like rhubarb. And blaming Meg.)
In his case, yes and he came back again and again...and was banned again and again.

I tried explaining to them that squirrels shouldn't do that...they do not listen me.
True story...
My folks have lots of pecan trees, etc., in their yard. Understandably, squirrels are all over 'em like...squirrels on pecan trees. Pop had set live traps for many years and then would release them down the road. We went over for Sunday dinner one time and things smelled so good I lifted up the pot lid and thought that was some awful small chicken. We got to the table, said Grace, and then pop picked up the pan and asked DWifey if she'd like some squirrel! She almost wretched. Pop, myself, and one of my brothers ate that thing to the bone.
Background: My folks were both raised on farms in south-central Texas and ate almost everything off the land. Also, they love my DWifey to death, but, if it ain't store bought beef or chicken, she's out.
