What's Still On and What's Now Off

An interesting study I found:
I wonder if it would be possible to only open outdoor offerings. The only issue with that, is that there are very few places/attractions that are completely outdoors. MK only has Jungle (and the temple could negate that possibility), Carpets, Liberty Belle, Dumbo, Barnstormer, Speedway, Teacups, and Astro (which the elevator could negate). Admittedly DAK has the best outdoor to total rides ratio thanks to Safari, Kali, Primeval, Tricera, and Everest (which the brief indoor portions could negate). Meanwhile DHS would only have 2/3 of Toy Story Land to work with and Epcot would have nothing. With the possible exception of DAK, I'd unfortunately doubt that "outdoor only" would feasibly be enough to open the park.
Sir! You left out the treehouse!!!

They may need to expand the medical facilities if they do this. Not for the virus but for heat stroke. The only way I survive a trip to WDW in the summer is to jump from one air conditioned building to another ;). I guess they could also wait until October to open.

actually using UV-C in a main duct is a very good application of this technology, provided the air is exposed long enough to destroy viruses and bacteria (the high speed of the air in the ducts would likely require a lengthy tunnel of UV light.

Purely outdoor is best — direct sunlight.
mostly outdoor, unenclosed — pretty good in summer. High temperatures and high humidity help destroy the virus.

Bad — anything primarily enclosed air conditioned indoors. Especially indoor queues.

Yes, you could open MK with just a few rides like that. But you’d have to limit attendance to just a couple thousand people, at most.

I choose not to believe in that. Miami has consistently been its hot and humid self. Miami-Dade county is the county with the most cases in all of Florida even though the weather already is mimicking hot and humid summers.

Not to say high temperatures and high humidity wont destroy it, but it definitely seems like it doesn't affect it. Of course maybe it just needs to be hotter and more humid for the virus to really feel it.

Heat and humidity don't destroy the virus, they drastically reduce the length of time the virus is able to survive outside of the body on surfaces.

Since Voyage of the Little Mermaid will remain closed when the parks open back up, are there any other attractions that are on the chopping block Disney will close earlier?

I’m guessing all equity entertainment will be slow to come back. The idea being, that mermaid was already going to close eventually, so they just aren’t going to plan on reopening it when other shows do.

I hope it’s not the case, but I could see Disney re-making all live shows to use no equity, and hardly any live performers. Just a bunch of Cars, Beauty and Beast sing along level shows.

Actually, exactly — the disease has spread much slower in hot humid environments, much lower transmission.
Note — not every spot in Singapore is bathed by hot sun light 24 hours per day. They have.... indoor locations! They have shade! They have people outdoors that might get closer to each other than 6 feet!

You’re confusing totally different arguments.

Heat and humidity will not stop the virus spread.
High heat and humidity will act as a natural disinfectant. (Which can be 1 factor in SLOWING viral spread).

Even in a hot and humid environment, the virus can thrive in a human host. It can stick to surfaces in air conditioned locations for days. It can be transmitted airborne person to person.

The point was solely:
If you have the ride vehicles of Big Thunder mountain sitting out in the hot sun, baking in the sunlight, heat and humidity — the viral cells that might be on the vehicle, will get killed pretty quickly.
As opposed to..if someone coughs on Toy Story Mania, the viral cells may stick to the seat for 3 days.

Most of the scientific studies and evidence suggests (none definitively) that:
1– summer heat and humidity will NOT wipe away the virus
2– summer heat and humidity can have some effect on the half life of the virus, and may reduce the speed of transmission.

Too many people are looking for absolutes...
you have the virus-deniers who claim it’s no worse than the flu, or that HCQ or summer weather will miraculously cure all.
but then you have the doomsayers — who think there is no alternative to locking ourselves in our homes with masks for 18 months, that don’t believe there is any other possible mitigation.

My apologies I misinterpreted your post as is so often the case with online messages. Thank you for further explanation :)

Exactly. Which is why posts that keep debating either position are not allowed.

In direct sunlight at temperatures of Florida summers, the virus is viable for less than a minute. The problem is there are few attractions and few walkways that feature non-stop sunlight exposure. So while it's a great idea to be outside during the pandemic in areas of low population density, I think Disney will have to disinfect surfaces very often as part of any plan to reopen prior to a magic bullet pharmaceutical intervention.
