What scenes in GMR should be kept?

Do.......not.........touch...........the Wizard of Oz scenes. (pretty please :lookaroun)

I could live without Tarzan. I agree that a Gone with the Wind scene would be wonderful. It would be nice to see some of the "classics" (and I use that term loosely as I know the standard for classic is different from person to person) from the 80's in there - John Hughes movies? anyone? anyone? Oh well, the cheese stands alone on this one I guess. :)

I've got a suggestion. I may be ripped apart for this suggestion, maybe I won't but think long and hard about this one. This movie is also timeless and a classic, is one of the highest grossing comedies of all time, it's got an all-star cast. At the time it was made the FX for the movie were spectacular and new.....

Ghostbusters

As far as popularity and contribution to the movie landscape, Star Wars easily out ranks Alien. I'm not complaining about Alien, but the question asked was what is a suitable replacement. Either Star Wars and Star Trek would be a suitable replacement for Alien and good representation for the Sci-Fi genre.

In that respect, you are fully right and I do agree. They both are more recognized than Alien. Also, in relation to an earlier post, Alien is a tad dark for the ride, although there is a good reason for it. I think Star Wars could make a good replacement if needed, but it is also best to avoid repetition, and that's why I wouldn't mind seeing Indy go from the ride.

Atsolomon, while I appreciate your Sci-fi movie mentions, Alien should not be scrapped just because little kids find it scary. It scared me too when I was little, but I loved other parts of the ride and a movie themed ride should cover all the emotions the silver screen can convey. Walt himself told D*ck Van D*ke that kids loved to be scared! And it's true.

Agreed. I went on GMR when I was 4 and 6 years old. I found the scene scary, but not scary enough to keep me from going on the ride. In fact, I loved it both times!

Besides, if you look at any major top ten Sci-Fi movies of all time lists, Alien WILL be on there.

I honestly don't get the hate for the alien scene.

This might sound stupid but, um...what tornado scene?

And I agree with whoever said Ghostbusters, definitely a classic

Windy scene with Mickey? It's a dark room.

Also-

Snow White (seriously? Disney's first DAS film and it's neglected? :brick:)
Song of the South (zipadeedooda)*ducks*
Titanic
Grease
and finally
Beverly Hills Chihuahua

This is a sensitive subject with me, I have my own detailed plans that I have created over the last few years of my "redesign" of the ride. Like everyone else, I have emotional attachments to scenes in the ride - mainly because they represent some of my favorite films - but even so, I think that the films can be represented much better. I believe our advancements in technology could allow us to make something really exciting. Allow us to recreate the dramatic, thrilling, and emotional scenes from the films we love. Creating a new, exciting attraction. Not a slow moving trip through corny snoozeville. Imagine advanced hydraulics allowing an audio animatronic Rhett to carry Scarlet up the grand staircase (angled so we can't see the crack needed for Rhett's supports and hydraulics), a lightweight 1930s Mercedes military troop vehicle facade on one side of the guests with it's tires on rollers connected to a straight track, allowing the tires to spin in place, creating the illusion of high pursuit, and a highly sophisticated Indiana Jones animatronic (that actually looks like Indy) galloping on a horse on the other side of the guests, recreating the desert chase sequence from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and last but not least, as the guest turn a corner, to their right, is the bow of the Titanic, and just as the audience looks up, they hear and see Rose say, "... Jack, I'm flying."

THAT would be a ride. I do believe Star Wars should be included. Preferably and without question the, "... Luke I am your father" scene. That would be an awesome set.

Footlight Parade - REPLACE!!!
Singin' in the Rain - Keep
Marry Poppins - Keep
The Public Enemy - Replace, but with another crime related scene from different, more popular movie.
Gangster / Cowboy scenes - Keep
Alien - KEEP!
Raiders of the Lost Ark - Keep
Tarzan - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, REPLACE!!!
Casablanca - Keep
Fantasia - Keep (not much you can do in this spot anyway)
The Wizard of Oz - Keep

As for the replacements... its tough, since there are SO many fantastic films to choose from, and they don't limit themselves to just Disney properties for this ride. I like the way the whole ride has a Turner Classic Movies feel to it, and I would like to keep that rather than having everything be replaced by more modern movies or more Disney characters.

But, lets face it, with the way things are going, I doubt GMR will receive any real upgrades anytime soon. If I could just replace ONE scene, it would be the Tarzan scene.

I believe the reason for the Gangster scene's existence is to represent a specific era for the Gangster movie, the 1930s. It's not necessarily any specific gangster film but it's that kind that's important.

Disney could have put in a more recent movie but the likes of The Public Enemy, Scarface (yes there was aversion made in the 1930s), Little Caesar etc. are more appropriate sources of inspiration for the "old Hollywood" general theme of the ride and for a Disney Theme Park.

Besides what scene from The Godfather, for example, would go in that space anyway?

And to who's asking, "Tornado Scene"=Fantasia Scene intended for Tornado sequence from The Wizard of Oz.

And Footlight Parade shouldn't be replaced IMO. Bubsy Berkeley needs representation (of course Fred and Ginger could go there) but the scene needs fixing!

My answer to the guy who said that they should replace Alien with something else cause its frightening to kids...

DON'T. NEVER. EVER.

If that happens, GMR will go to hell. Just look at Alien Encounter. Look at Epcot Center. Look at the best rides that Disney created. Why did they get renovated/replaced/Disney characterized/touchscreen'd? Because it was too boring and frightening for kids.

Take the Living Seas for example. It was educational and interesting. It featured nice exhibits and real life fish. It teached us something.

But, gosh, who cares, cartoon fish are awesome, aren't they? And it makes kids happy, so, who cares?

I could think of a few:

1) When Vito Corleone is gunned down at the fruit stand
2) When Sonny is killed at the toll booth

Those are probably the 2 most memorable moments in the movie and could be done.

They are memorable, but would they be effective or exciting to look at in a large soundstage setting from a distance? At least with the current set-up the action surrounds the audience in a dramatized gritty period alley that's designed to set an overall mood.

What needs to go/be updated at the Alien scene is the horrendously silly Sigourney Weaver animatronic. She doesn't look scared. She looks epileptic.

And is it just me or is the Casablance scene WAY, WAY SCARIER than the Alien scene? There's something so ominous and foreboding about that plane propeller and engine coming at you from the darkness. I always feel way more anxiety during that scene than during the pop-up alien queen - which rarely, if ever, works like it used to in the 80's.

I absolutely agree that Alien is a classic -- and rightly so.

My point is that the fright level is out of place on the ride that is supposed to be the "weenie" for the park'. All of the other parks' marquee/weenie rides are "G" rated, if you will (Spaceship Earth, It's Tough to be a Bug, the carousel). Of course the weenie is now blocked by the hat, but we can leave that for other threads. ;-)

Before having kids I never would have thought that Alien should be removed from the ride, but there you go. ;-)

I would love to see the Busby Berkley bit fixed or replaced with something that essentially does the same thing. OTOH, how expensive is it run a bubble machine and are they that finicky?

Another great Sci-fi film is Blade Runner (the cut w/out the voice over an happy ending). Would Terry Gilliam's film "Brazil" count as science fiction?

Oh, here you go, Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" should be the replacement for Alien in TGMR.

I think this hits on something. I don't know if any of the ride scenes need to be changed per se, but I would enjoy a complete replacement of the AA's to the more realistic and modern model. I think that step would add so much to the overall experience, that people would forget so much about new scenes and be lost in a new experience.

Agreed in full, if there is one the the ride needs more than anything else it's new AAs with better skins and movements like the SEE figures.

Yeah! I think the ascent improvements to SSE are much overlooked with some of the other stuff going on.

If you could bring that realism to the AA's in GMR, you might really have someting that is about the Golden Age of Hollywood.

It's truly amazing to go experience something like SEE or HoP and see that kind of attraction modernized. I want to see GMR (and PotC and CoP) done the same way so all of WDW's AA heavy attractions are equally impressive from a tech standpoint.

At least the neon signs out front are beign fixed. Wonder how long it will take them to finish the one on the right?
