What Happened in Paris...can EASILY Happen in Disney World

My comment is regarding if there may be hidden metal detectors in the park.

I am curious though...at what point do you consider a person carrying a weapon a threat?

depends...since Disney world prohibits it i would think immediately. (most legal gun owners play by the rules statistically) that said i don't think metal detectors are needed. they can be worked around like anything else.

No
We pretty much have all heard the news by now about that horrible attack in Paris last night.
These were attacked on civilians at a popular night spot. Coordinated attacks in several locations.

So what's to stop this from happening in Walt Disney World?
The short answer: Absolutely Nothing

Have you seen the security at WDW?
- Normally older gentlemen checking the bags of guests as they walk into the park. And it's not a very detailed search.
- And when you are simply carrying in a camera or have no bag...you aren't checked or wanded at all.
- I don't recall any guards carrying firearms
- There are no metal detectors
- There is little to no overarching security during the most crowded times (Parades, Fireworks)

So what is to stop a terrorist (or several) from bringing in a small video camera containing an explosive, and a cell phone as a trigger...buying something from a store...leaving their explosives in several bags around the park during the fireworks display when it is pitch black and everyone is distracted and looking up....and then the terrorists can simply activate the explosives with their cell phones and cause MASS casualties. How many hundreds can they kill? That would be horrible, FAR worse than what happened in Paris.

Hell, there are sites that offer free "Crowd Calendars" to let you know when the park is most likely going to be at the highest capacity. Or you can simply attend a number of times and watch the trends and learn the schedule.

So my question is.....how safe are we at Walt Disney World?
Do they have bomb and explosive detection devices?
They never swab any cameras so how do you know if one if not a bomb?
Do they have heavily armed reaction forces?
What are the evacuation protocols?
.... Have you TRIED getting out of Magic Kingdom in a hurry after the fireworks show? It takes forever. It is nearly impossible. We are like cattle being herded down a narrow canal. One explosive and you have mass chaos and no where to go.

I personally think this is a very serious issue that should be addressed Proactively instead of after something already happens that is devastating to life and safety at the parks.
The short answer is...there isn't a surefire way to prevent this kind of thing from happening at WDW.

But really, that applies to everywhere. In this world that we live in, there is always the possibility of dangerous, even deadly, situations.

We have shootings at movie theaters.
We have shootings at malls.
We have violence on college campuses.
We have home invasions.
We have terrorist attacks at public events.
Are we really safe anywhere?

I don't know about you, but I go to the movies and to the mall. I attend college. I feel safe in my own home with our security system and few other measures. I go to baseball games and other events. Basically, I live my life without constant fear, as do millions of others. There is little point in living life in fear. It only lets those who intend to do us harm win. You take precautions. The number for campus security is on my cell phone. At public events, I am aware of what is going on around me. Movie theaters are instituting bag checks. No, these are not sure-fire ways of preventing anything bad from happening ever, but it is far better than living in constant fear.

Also, considering how huge Disney is, how many visitors come through there each year, and how few and far between the incidents are and how quickly they are dealt with when they do happen...you have to know that the security is pretty good at Disney. And they likely have measures in place that we are unaware of. But if we were aware of them, those who would intend to cause trouble would find ways around them.

At least at WDW they have Security Theater Guards checking bags at the park entrances. At Disneyland they have the same elderly lady ticket takers who work the turnstiles checking the bags. It's a joke, and purely theatrical.

The real danger of terrorist attack at a Disney theme park would not come from a paying customer. It would come from the Cast Members themselves. We all know you only need a pulse and a half-smile to get hired by Disney nowadays, and turnover is very, very high. They are pushing through tens of thousands of hourly CM's through the Parks hiring system in the six American parks every year.

A terrorist cell could easily get a couple people to get CM jobs at WDW or Disneyland, work there for a month or two to get logistical knowledge, and then sneak in whatever they want to do whatever terror or mass attack they want. It would be very easy to pull off so long as the terrorists had half a brain and kept their cool for 30 to 60 days of entry-level employment.

A terrorist attack from a Cast Member or small group of Cast Members would be far more effective than any paying customer who wasn't familiar with the park layout and processes. And there's really nothing Disney can do to stop that from happening.

Hidden metal detectors would be dangerous as they can mess with medical devices. There are also perfectly legitimate reasons for a person to carry metal and plenty of weapons that are not going to set off a metal detector.

Lots of kinds of metal detectors not all use an active magnetic field to detect metal, What's probably being used a is a small magnetic anomaly detector which senses distortions in the local magnetic field caused by large pieces of metal emphasis on LARGE.

This is the same technology used in the 'stinger' on P-3 Orion ASW aircraft.

Disclaimer - I don't own a gun of any type (hand gun, rifle, shot gun etc..) as I don't need one.

That is the question; when do I consider someone carrying a gun threat? I don't know, but it is a certainty a criminal carrying with the intent to use it in a wrong way/manner is a threat. Someone carrying for their own safety/peace of mind? MAYBE; in the heat of the moment, maybe.....emotion goes up, IQ goes down....

And, I fully support the 2nd amendment, and can't imagine my support ever wavering. If I thought that right was going to be taken away, I would be a FORMER non-owner......

You don't need one - Till you do and when seconds count the police are minutes away.

I gotta disagree with you here. In the USA, our anti-terrorism and homeland security is nothing short of magnificent. The amount of planning it would take for a group to pull off what you're describing would be more then enough for that group to wind up in a dark room somewhere.

The MUCH greater risk is a lone whacko like we see all to often in this country. And the most likely targets would be the transportation vehicles/areas.

We where in WDW two weeks ago and the security as a whole is so much better than DLP. We had complete trust in everyone we meet and wouldn't hesitate in going back to the states. As regular central Paris and DLP visitors, we will go back but think it will take a while to feel safe again.

Couple things.

1) These types of attacks are by definition unpredictable and could happen anywhere. WDW is really no different.

2) I think we will see metal detectors and random "wanding" of guests, airport style. It's just a matter of time.

3) The security you see is not that only security that exists at Disney. I'm not saying they are Fort Knox, but there are other things in place.

4) I hope it never happens.
