What did you do?

Haven’t gave an update in a while so here is a quick one. I’m currently in Week #16 of my virtual marathon weekend training. I just finished the long run for Week #15 last night.

I am probably going to move my virtual marathon weekend races to the end of this week (probably right after Christmas). The reason I am doing this is so I can get the marathon weekend training program out of the way so I can focus on my Springtime Surprise program and link up with my group. I feel I am more then ready to take on marathon weekend virtually. It also is better for me in terms of timing.

Despite moving the date, I plan on tackling these races much like you normally would. 3 days in succession 5K, 10K, and Half. I technically don’t have to do this since I am not running a challenge but feel like it may be good practice for the Springtime Surprise challenge. This plan could change. I was very close to doing a full Dopey this year, but it would of really messed up my training for the other races so opted to stop with the Half. Maybe another year I’ll tackle it medals look incredible this year.

I can’t submit results till January 6th but I’ll have all the races logged and ready to submit on that day. After the races, I will do the cooldown week of the virtual marathon weekend training then pick up with the Springtime Surprise plan.

Currently, my group is in Week #4 of their training program. I plan on joining the Springtime Surprise plan during their Week #6 this is a week that doesn’t have the greatest mileage and naturally is a good point to ease into the plan.

Along the way to Springtime Surprise, their is one “stop” (so to say) at Virtual Princess Half Marathon, I decided to only do the half so that it wouldn’t impact my training. According to my plan, I’ll probably be tackling that race on February 20th (or somewhere around there).

Then I’ll ride the training plan all the way through to it’s natural conclusion at the LIVE springtime surprise challenge.

EDIT: If I join the springtime surprise plan (which is the same plan as my virtual marathon weekend plan) during week #6 as I am planning. I’ll have about 13 weeks of training plus an additional “cooldown” week after the race for a total of 14 weeks of training for springtime surprise.

I am hoping it is not too warm and humid again. I have a run scheduled tonight. I just came back into work from lunch it is 31 degrees.
I am sure it will be colder once the sun goes down.

Hi everyone. No, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth. :D It's just been a very frustrating year for me because of my hamstring tear in January. I don't know where I left off in my saga, but it's time for an update since I'm finally running again. Three months of PT early in the year did not make the pain go away. A cortisone injection into the hamstring attachment point in July did not make the pain go away. Finally a doctor friend encouraged me to try acupuncture, so I did. After 9 visits during the Summer and Fall, I had a little relief from the pain for the first time all year. I started to run just 5 minutes at a time on the TM, and the pain was mild. I increased to 1 mile and the pain was still mild. I tried to transfer to running outdoors, and at first the pain was back full force, but I slowed my pace to a near crawl and was able to avoid most of the pain. I've been VERY gradually adding distance and "speed" and I'm thrilled to say that after 11 MONTHS(!) I'm finally back to being able to run about 3 miles at a relatively slow pace with almost no pain. I plan to continue to try to increase my distance very gradually so I don't set myself back. Last year I ran 11 miles on New Years Day. This New Year's Day I will be delighted if I can run 4 miles. Don't ever take your health for granted! In the swift moment of tripping on an umbrella stand, I lost nearly a year of running. I look forward to hearing what all of you have been up to.

So glad you have finally been able to run again, even if not as fast or as long. Hopefully in a year’s time you’ll be back to where you were before the « stupid accident »

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. I am sure you will get there. It is the attack of inanimate objects.
They don't like that we can run.

5.25 miles last night. 7 plus laps around the local high school. My first sub-freezing run. It was 28 degrees when I started.
Funny my weight has dropped a bit over the last couple of weeks. I am feeling better and better about the marathon.

I just ran a 2022 race…in 2021! Anyways, the way my two training plans intersect it was best I started to tackle virtual Marathon Weekend a bit early.

Today, I completed the 2022 Virtual Walt Disney World 5K! This is my first time actually running a 5K during marathon weekend (virtually). As such, I tried super hard to PR and get a decent time. Without further ado here are the results.

Time: 34:50
Distance: 3.11
Avg Pace: 11:10

I unfortunately did not PR. That honor actually goes to the Timeless Classic 5K. Which I completed in 34:30. Yes, 20 SECONDS shorter. A little upset I missed it by seconds but that’s fine. Great results in my book still.

Anyways, tomorrow is the 10K followed by the Half. I definitely ran this 5K hard so may want to take a more measured approach to the others so I can finish.

I unfortunately did not run over the weekend. I took Friday off and was going to run long on Saturday. Saturday came and so did an ice storm. Sunday I had a wedding. Too much of a taper. I will definitely be out there tonight.

This morning, I continued my virtual Marathon Weekend gauntlet with the 10K!

As I said yesterday, I ran the 5K way too hard. Even so, was still not able to secure a PR. Thinking about it now, I probably went out to hard since about a mile and a half in my heart felt like it was going to pop out of my chest.

Anyways, I wanted to take it easy during the 10K. I purposely didn’t go out as fast like I did during the 5K. Without further ado, here are my results for this morning’s race.

Time: 01:13:18
Distance: 6.22
Avg Pace: 11:47

According to my Strava (which can be iffy sometimes but usually is pretty accurate) this race marks a new PR. This takes the crown away from (funny enough) last year’s Walt Disney World 10K. Which I completed in 01:14:38. It’s funny when I actively try to secure a PR I couldn’t but when I purposely tried to take it easier I was able to during the race.

The run felt good, I didn’t overly strain myself and it felt a lot better then yesterday’s 5K.

Tomorrow, marks the end of the gauntlet and my virtual Marathon Weekend with the Half Marathon. I plan on employing similar techniques as I did with the 10K.

That was not fun. I went to go for a run last night. Got around the school once in total. The sidewalks, though shoveled,
had frozen over. I was skating more than running. It has been almost a week since I got in a decent run. I am heading for
the gym and the dreaded gerbil wheel tomorrow. I am getting my Covid booster tonight.

I would like to come on and say that the race went really well and I secured a PR but the fact of the matter is that didn’t happen, and I didn’t even finish the distance in one shot.

Today, I learned what happens when you don’t hydrate or eat at all during or before a race. I started around 11:30 (ish) it was already much later then I usually run. About 2 miles in I remembered I didn’t fill my water bottles. This was the first red flag but I figured I have run before without water. So I continued the run as normal. Luckily my course is a loop so I end where I started.

About 10 (ish) miles in I was starting to not feel well. I knew I couldn’t finish I had about a mile till I made it back home. Originally, I wanted to just grab a water bottle and keep running. By the time I made it home, I had to make the call to call the remaining two miles off. Yes, maybe if I really pushed it I could of finished but it wasn’t worth it.

Here are the results for what I did finish:

Time: 02:28:51
Distance: 11.46
Avg Pace: 12:59

Later today, I will finish the remaining 1.64 miles to complete the half. Yes, I know I technically didn’t finish the distance in one goal. I will however be running many more halves in preparation for Springtime Surprise to make up for it.

Will update later when I finish the remaining distance.

As promised, I did in fact run the remaining distance to earn my medal. I know it’s not ideal but at least I ran the required distance. I still feel like I earned that medal. Anyways here are the results for the final stretch.

Time: 22:04
Distance: 1.65
Avg Pace: 13:20

These files will be uploaded to Strava as individual files. When I submit the results to runDisney I will simply add the two times together. When adding the two sessions together these are my final results.

Time: 02:50:55
Distance: 13.11

With that strange course of events my virtual Marathon Weekend ends. I feel it was (mostly) successful and learned a very valuable lesson about hydration. Like I said before, I will go into a cooldown week then start up with training for my LIVE Springtime Surprise Challenge event. Along the way I will be completing multiple halves to make up for this including the virtual Princess Half Marathon!

EDIT: Very excited for my medals and shirts to arrive! Good luck to all the in person and virtual runners! Definitely don’t make the same mistake I did.

I hit the gym last night 45 minutes on the treadmill. I was going to run outside but it was raining and I did not have my
rain gear with me. I am going to go out tonight and brought my rain gear just in case.
