What did you do?

Glad to see you back Nick.

This morning was going to be 3 mile speed work. My daughter Rivers was up a lot last night and tried to spoil my morning. Speed work was a little changed up. I was very tired starting out so I adapted. I tried to speed up as I went by 30 seconds per mile. I guess i did pretty good with my internal speedometer.

1 - 8:46
2 - 8:18
3 - 7:44

I' m so damned jealous of that internal speedometer of yours - even more of that than of your speed! :) Even when I finish this training program and am (hopefully) able to run a sub 28 min 5K, I'm worried that my pace will be all over the map and I'll crash and burn too early. For instance, this morning I did a short tempo workout on the treadmill. The meat of it was 1.5 miles at 9:18, .5 miles slow, another 1.5 miles at 9:18. It was tough for me to finish the second leg, and I did it, but if I didn't have the treadmill forcing me to stay on pace, I don't think I would have been able to pull it off based on an internal sensor. Well, at least I'm doing what I'm supposed to and hopefully things will fall into place on race day.

Oh, and 12 miles on the stationary bike last night.

Welcome back Nick. I assume by your increased mileage that you're feeling better. At least I hope so.

:D I made Jill cuss... I made Jill cuss.

Kidding. I know this sounds silly, but I really have these gears. They are all roughly 30 second pace from each other. Naturally, hills and terrain will make a pace be off, but If I concentrate, and adjust according to the terrain and have the same output, I can keep a good average. Weird.

I suffer from this fear too Jill. When I go out to do my speed work, my first mile is always conservative even if Im feeling good. Typically, I get faster as I go.

BTW, that pace you did on the treadmill is awesome! Regardless if it was pacing you or not. I would be the biggest spaz on a treadmill. Id probably either get thrown off the back or run through the front of it.

LOL, thanks for the support Joel. Sometimes I have to try really hard not to fly off the back of my treadmill, particularly because there is a tall wood cabinet about 15 inches behind it that I would fly into and probably then under! Not the best treadmill placement, I know, but we do what we must with the space we have.

I have two - flat out sprint, or just running.

Just running is pretty constant. I am working on getting it faster, but we will see what happens.

Hills are a big deal for me. I try to keep my footstrikes per minute the same when going downhill, I just open my stride a bit. Uphill my stride gets shorter. It lets me keep the same tempo while still changing speeds.

Thanks Jill. I have been super busy with work and teaching, etc...

And, you would assume...wrong. Sorry. I'm burnt. My legs are trashed, pain everywhere, but pushing through with these 20+ miles every morning, and the long run on Saturdays. You know I don't do anything by the book, and border on stupidity, but It seems to be working...I can go the ultra distances without flintching, and increasing my pace is like flipping on a switch. It's the first mile and the rest of the normal non-running day which is killing me.

Dave,
I run faster up most hills than I do going down them. I have gotten dinged up more with super minor injuries going downhill too fast than any other thing. I think we all know the dangers.

Or, I could just run with you and pace you. I really wish I could come run your route and you come run mine. Short distance (than your use too) and super hilly on my end and yours is flatter but double the distance. I think it would be fun respectfully.

Had to share with you all---

Went to the gym this afternoon for a run. The gym was packed. I found a treadmill that was working but the tv was broken and I realized that I forgot my headphone for my mp3 player at home..no problem..just want to get a good run in. Jumped on the treadmill, started running, feeling pretty good. About a mile in, the treadmill next to me opens up, some guy gets on the treadmill immediately. HE REEKS! I mean reeks like he took a bath with a dead skunk before coming to the gym. He starts running at like a crazy 8.5 pace. I am doing all I can to ignore the waffing odor that is coming from my left. Again no TV, no music. I hear Dory's voice in my head "Just Keep Running, Just Keep running" I continue running and another 1 mile or so in I feel something drip on me. I look over and the guy is sweating so profusing and running with his arms swaying side back and forth. I am totally disgusted but continue to run. I get to about 2.5 miles and now it's like I'm being rained on by sweat THAT'S NOT MINE. Honestly I don't even like my own sweat.
So needless to say I quickly finished up and got out of there. I managed to get in about 3.5 miles. Disapointed because I wanted to get in 5 tonight but I just couldn't do it. Came home and immediately took a LONG hot shower.
Hope everyone had more pleasants runs than me today. :D

Ewwwww is right!

Thanks for giving me another reason to be thankful for my run outside tomorrow am!

Great running by everyone lately :)

I did 8 this morning at 9:46 pace and it was abetter feeling run than yesterday's, that is certain. Mentally, a lot better, but the legs are still feeling sluggish and heavy. Glad that my plan doesn't call for anything longer than 8 mile runs during the week, because I would definitely struggle to do them before work. One more weekday run this week, and only 6 more runs before vacation starts =) We are going on a 7 day Disney Cruise on the 22nd, and I built it in to my training plan as a light week. I only have to run twice that week. It has become sort of a mini-focal point for me right now.

I think my overall sluggishness is just because I am reaching the peak of the training for the full. Nothing like what Nick puts in, but I have 79 miles this month already.

5 miles at 9:58 this morning.

Miles 1 & 2 were off the charts slow....3-4-5 were ok. I am starting to feel the cliches about training for your first full marathon, and trying to just focus on getting the miles in on tired legs. Rest day tomorrow, and slated for 18 on Saturday =)

Dude! That sucks. Plain and simple.

There was a guy at my old gym that would load his butt crack up with Desitin. You could see it bleeding through his spandex biking shorts (he was a biker). After a few minutes, the sweat would make the Desitin bleed onto the benches and workout machines. It was a strip of his butt crack Desitin. I would go postal.

The guy was a fruitcake. Never cleaned it up.

That is absolutely horrible! You poor thing. (And Joel, your story wasn't any better!)

As for me, I'll be doing a 7.5 mile long tempo run today after work today. I have to keep it at 9:48 pace which I think will be quite doable in the cooler air (and possibly rain later) today. After that I'm off to Vegas for the weekend and won't be back online (or in my running shoes) until Monday. Happy trails everyone!

Oh man, I am so glad I have my own treadmill, I'm close to running faster than it goes though, which sucks. Not a bad run today, it was nice and cool out, my pace was still way off but this virus seems to be going away. Still put in 13.2 miles though. Glad to see everyone here is doing so well.
