Trip Report We Kept Genie in the Lamp *COMPLETED*

50 years later, what goes around comes around.

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 with an admission charge and an attraction ticket system. Admission got you into the park (and onto the free If You Had Wings, sponsored by Eastern Airlines) but every ride required a separate ticket (A,B,C,D,E) which varied in price based on the attraction’s “value.” E-tickets were the most expensive (this is where the expression “it’s an E-ticket ride!” originated) and cost 90 cents apiece. Ticket books bundled A-E together for a reduced cost, but there were never enough E’s (and always leftover A’s and B’s.) Not to worry though ~ each land had its own ticket booth (think tiny kiosk) where individual attraction tickets could be purchased (assuming your parents said yes. 😉)

This was the system for over a decade. The introduction of all-day Passports (and eventual Park Hoppers) was a welcome relief for guests ~ ride what you want as many times as you want for no additional cost. Yes, you had to wait in line. Lines that often were very long. But it was a SIMPLE system.

When Fastpass was introduced at the turn of the century, it required some strategic planning and lots of extra walking to obtain the paper FPs in order to “skip” a line. Fastpass+ exacerbated strategic planning to a whole ‘nother level. But it was a FREE system.

Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane have thrown SIMPLE and FREE out the window. And now in 2021, we’re back to admission and paying for attractions.

But not us.

At least not this trip.

This vacation was a respite for me as I grieve the recent loss of my father. It was a time for memories and nostalgia. A time for keeping things simple.

I’m ready to share if you’re ready to read.

I found a last-minute dinner reservation for 6 pm on the Boardwalk.

As I had been following along on @wdisney9000 ‘s live trip report, I fully expected to find him here.

Alas, no sign of a man in a white t-shirt holding a beer anywhere! :(

So Woody and I went inside to check in at the podium.

As you can see by the entrance, Trattoria al Forno was a popular place! Ours was the only available table when we were seated. I felt lucky to have secured what appeared to be a sought-after ADR.

I felt even luckier when our vivacious server appeared immediately to welcome us. Fabi was on point with everything during this meal. When we couldn’t decide which of two wines to order, she brought extra glasses so we could try both.

Note that she had brought the bread service out with the wine, which was a good thing since we were hungry!

It must have been a night of indecision for Woody and me as also couldn’t decide between the same two entreés.

When we asked Fabi for her recommendation, she said both dishes were her favorite!

“You get one, I’ll get the other and we’ll share,” I suggested to Woody. He readily agreed.

Dish #1 was Plant-Based Rigatoni Bolognese. It was excellent.

B1A6AD66-DFA4-44D1-9065-A43FD6CD8590.jpeg

Dish #2 was Lasagna al Forno. Also excellent. And neither of us had ever seen a lasagna presentation like this before.

3F2D2E72-EC8B-43CD-9238-B3B3232A4B85.jpeg

The noodles were standing upright! :jawdrop: (Vertical noodles, who knew??!)

We split each entreé in half and devoured both. We laughed when Fabi asked if we wanted dessert. Who had room??!

This was our favorite meal of the trip at the time. Two days later that title would belong to someplace else. But I’m getting ahead of myself….

Back on the Boardwalk I did another cursory glance for @wdisney9000 but it was dark and I’d had much wine. We opted to return to the Poly via the same method we used yesterday ~ boat to Studios, bus to Poly.

The nighttime cruise was even better than the daytime cruise. Romantic. Magical.

AA741040-AF3D-4F97-B105-975CA40C6E5E.jpeg

And we got to see MK fireworks from the bus. Bonus!

Woody turned on Game 1 of the World Series once we were back and watched it virtually with our son who lives overseas. They would watch every game of the Series together….and shared the joy of a long-awaited Braves Championship!

Woody had some work to do this morning and would meet me in the park later. I didn’t make early entry or rope drop (and have since forgotten why). The monorail was having issues after I boarded and sat at the station for awhile.

We didn’t make it too far before coming to a stop again.

However after our pick-up at the GF it was smooth sailing to the MK. And being late there wasn’t a mob at the Passholder entrance.

This picture was time stamped at 9:45 am.

Five minutes later I was here.

How many more days until your next BTMRR ride, @Longers? Until then I am happy to ride in your place!

Will this be in my future? Stay tuned.

The attraction was essentially a walk-on. Just ahead of me in line was a boy (around 4 years old) and his mother. As they were assigned their gate number the boy announced, “Mommy, this is the LAST TIME I am going on this ride.”

Perhaps the last time this year. Trust me kid, you’ll grow to love it!

I didn’t love the car I was assigned. Right behind the engine.

But a first car ride is better than no ride!

I took advantage of being solo and went next door to an attraction that Woody prefers to skip. (Getting wet is fine for bathing suits, not so much for clothes 😉.)

The park had been open for 90 minutes and Splash was a walk on.

(Like my awesome back of the log selfie? :hilarious:)

Many of the effects inside the mountain weren’t operating, and the ride stopped a few times with the Brer Bear announcement to please remain seated. I earlier today that Splash will be closing in January for its annual refurbishment. It desperately needs it!

Speaking of desperation….

I received a text from Woody informing me that he was in the park. I told him to meet me at Pirates.

We waited about ten minutes. We never got our ride photo. In fact we only got two of our ride photos this vacation ~ one from Haunted Mansion and my Splash photo above. I believe you had a similar problem with no-show ride photos on your recent trip, @sheriffwoody? Is Disney weaning AP-ers off free ride photos?

Seems Pecos Bill’s was in my future after all!

It wasn’t until JUST NOW….as I posted this picture….that I noticed the word “Bill” isn’t possessive. I’ve called this restaurant Pecos Bill’s for YEARS.

And I will likely continue to do so since old habits die hard.

There were plenty of open tables in the noisy room. I felt the risk of ear-piercing screams was minimal.

We both ordered the taco trio. The tacos were surprisingly good!

Caveat: This is not a political post. This is a patriotic post. Woody and I are proud and privileged to be citizens of the United States. As such, we respect the office of President no matter which party is in control.

We had wanted to visit the Hall of Presidents on our August trip but missed the opportunity. So after lunch we headed over to see the new show with the addition of President Biden.

I’m glad to report the audience was respectful and there were no security guards in the theater.

The curtain lift for the “reveal” wows me just as much as the Stormtrooper room in RotR.

I hadn’t paid much attention to the 50th statues yet, but this one sure caught my eye!

Since we had plans to return to MK tonight, we headed back to Poly for a break.

(You will…in just a few hours. 😉)

I couldn’t pass up another opportunity to hang by a pool….in October! Woody joined me. Life was good.

Later in the afternoon I hopped on the monorail for an errand. It was still so pretty outside.

I popped into Basin to pick up some Mickey bath bombs for the grand girls. I have a garden tub at home which they love to play in when spending the night. I bought several in different colors. When the soap “bomb” begins to fizz, tiny soluble Mickey heads (in black, red and white) are released into the water. Great fun for little kids! (Not as fun to clean the inevitable ring around the tub, however. 😉)

The highest point of the monorail track was my favorite as a kid and remains so present day.

Regarding Splash, I know I read somewhere (in the past), that they turn down the force of the water jets in the winter months (when outside temperatures have dropped). Since you visit WDW a few times each year, did it seem like the water effects weren't as powerful in late October -- compared to say, back in August?
