Trip Report We Kept Genie in the Lamp *COMPLETED*

50 years later, what goes around comes around.

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 with an admission charge and an attraction ticket system. Admission got you into the park (and onto the free If You Had Wings, sponsored by Eastern Airlines) but every ride required a separate ticket (A,B,C,D,E) which varied in price based on the attraction’s “value.” E-tickets were the most expensive (this is where the expression “it’s an E-ticket ride!” originated) and cost 90 cents apiece. Ticket books bundled A-E together for a reduced cost, but there were never enough E’s (and always leftover A’s and B’s.) Not to worry though ~ each land had its own ticket booth (think tiny kiosk) where individual attraction tickets could be purchased (assuming your parents said yes. 😉)

This was the system for over a decade. The introduction of all-day Passports (and eventual Park Hoppers) was a welcome relief for guests ~ ride what you want as many times as you want for no additional cost. Yes, you had to wait in line. Lines that often were very long. But it was a SIMPLE system.

When Fastpass was introduced at the turn of the century, it required some strategic planning and lots of extra walking to obtain the paper FPs in order to “skip” a line. Fastpass+ exacerbated strategic planning to a whole ‘nother level. But it was a FREE system.

Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane have thrown SIMPLE and FREE out the window. And now in 2021, we’re back to admission and paying for attractions.

But not us.

At least not this trip.

This vacation was a respite for me as I grieve the recent loss of my father. It was a time for memories and nostalgia. A time for keeping things simple.

I’m ready to share if you’re ready to read.

Woody and I had been liking our cruises and used the boat for transportation this evening.

A welcome party greeted us.

All right, all right ~ the characters were probably there to wave goodbye to departing guests. But a wave is a wave, so I’m claiming mine as a hello!

Fireworks viewing tape was already in place. Woody pointed out that the tape was gold, rather than the usual blue.

“Even the masking tape is celebrating the 50th,” he remarked wryly. “And people are complaining that Disney isn’t doing enough to mark the anniversary.”

This was supposed to be our last night of vacation, so naturally I wanted to spend it in the MK. I didn’t have much success with finding a dinner ADR except for a 4:30 pm Crystal Palace. Now I know Woody and I are old, but we’re not quite Early Bird Dinner seniors yet. I booked the reservation anyway, hoping I might be able to change it.

Two days ago I was able to modify it to 7:15 pm.

We checked in at the outdoor podium a few minutes before 7, hopeful we might get in early. Then we went to sit on the porch….

….where we remained until our table was ready. At 7:15.

Since my July visit with Em, Crystal Palace had reverted back to a buffet ~ no more plated entreés. Pooh and his friends were not there to greet/wave, which….as much as I adore the Pooh characters….was fine with us. (Especially since there was no surcharge for a character dining experience.)

There was a bounty of food on the buffet, though I seem to have only a few pics….and none of main dishes.

However I did get a picture of some of “Walt’s Favorites” featured on the buffet. Wood-fired prime rib, Walt’s short rib, Walt’s crispy fried chicken (boneless), and Walt’s green beans with bacon and onions.

Walt had good taste in food! :hungry:

Both of us returned to the buffet for seconds. We went light on dessert. Woody and I agreed this meal was a very good value!

Our server promptly cleared dirty plates and kept our beverages refilled. He also said we were welcome to step outside and watch the fireworks if we wanted.

But I didn’t want to watch the fireworks from the restaurant’s porch. I wasn’t impressed by the soundtrack or the pyro for Enchantment when I watched the show from the Poly beach. What I wanted to see was the new feature ~ the projections on Main Street shops. And I’d have to be on Main Street to see them.

As we waited for the bill, Woody could tell I was itching to leave. It was two minutes until showtime.

“Go,” he said. “I’ll pay and meet you on Main Street.”

Famous last words.

Well written. Sorry to hear about the loss of your father.
I’ve missed seeing you around here and I hope your family is well. Thanks for your kind words.

Regarding Splash, I know I read somewhere (in the past), that they turn down the force of the water jets in the winter months (when outside temperatures have dropped). Since you visit WDW a few times each year, did it seem like the water effects weren't as powerful in late October -- compared to say, back in August?
You’re right, they do dial back the water effects in the cooler months. I’ve ridden in January and stayed dry. The two big jets that were off in October weren’t in use this summer either, for which I was thankful. I’ve never cared for getting drenched at the beginning of the ride (when the log passes by the drop and the jet is turned sideways at those just starting their journey.) And the jet that was powerful enough to hit guests crossing the bridge in front of the attraction has been off for several years.

I moved like a gazelle through the throng that was crowding the area from Crystal Palace to Main Street. By some miracle, the show hadn’t started yet even though it was past 8 pm. The pic below was time stamped 8:07 pm.

I texted Woody a non-zoomed photo to let him know approximately where I was.

Can’t move off the porch was his reply. I texted back that we’d meet up after the show.

Disney Enchantment (DE) began. The opening does not grab one’s attention like Happily Ever After did. I felt no chills. I couldn’t really make out the projections on the castle, but I wasn’t interested in those anyway.

I impulsively FaceTimed Em. I didn’t even say hello, I just held my phone over my head. She had not seen any videos of Enchantment, nor read anything about it, because she was so disgusted by Disney’s decision to replace HEA. I suppose in my subconscious I wanted her to experience DE in the park with me that night.

The Main Street projections started mid-show. They reminded me of the dancing projections on the Streets of America during the Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights (😭) years ago ~ and that made me smile. Thus I spent the most time focusing on the storefront projections and enjoying DE more “in person” than when I’d watched from the beach.

But I agreed with Em’s overall assessment: “Enchantment is the Walmart version of Happily Ever After.”

The end of the show was the beginning of Woody’s nightmare. He was trapped by a crowd crush in front of Crystal Palace. In his effort to meet up with me his attempts to move forward were thwarted by CMs who would not let him pass.

We texted back and forth and I sensed his growing frustration. We set our meeting place as the restrooms by the Tomorrowland Terrace. (We were thisclose to running into each other @joshsprincess921!) I did not have too much difficulty getting there (except I was “swimming upstream” through departing guests) and had to wait for him for a long time.

The park closed at 9 pm but it was an Extra Magic evening for deluxe resort guests, meaning we could stay and play until 11 pm. (I did not know this until after I’d booked, so this was an unexpected surprise!) Most…but not all…attractions were open for EMH. One that was not was the Peoplemover. We love riding Peoplemover at night. We had discussed at dinner the importance of getting in line before the park closed.

Woody was not in a good mood when we finally were reunited. But he hurried with me to the Peoplemover and was finally able to relax once we were aboard.

We got stopped inside Space Mountain but the lights were on only over the Peoplemover track.

Woody and I stopped to look at the model trains in Germany. I refrained from taking any pictures of what we witnessed. There was a boy, about 7 or 8 years old, who had climbed over the fence and was walking through the layout, bending over to touch things, as if he were in his own backyard.

As usual our first thought was, where are the parents?!!!?

I noticed his two older brothers nearby (the oldest couldn’t have been more than 11) who were laughing.

Then Mom appeared, drink in hand (why were we not surprised), and began to YELL at the boy to get out of there. We knew immediately what part of the U.S. she was from due to her thick accent. (If you think I’m saying where, you can fuhgettaboutit.)

The boy began to YELL back at Mom. A shouting match ensued. Boy taunted Mom by getting closer to the fence but out of her reach. Eventually he got close enough where she could grab him and he climbed over the fence….only to hit Mom with a sucker punch.

Mom did not reprimand him nor his brothers who continued to laugh.

It was clear who held the power in that family.
Oh my goodness the things I miss when I'm reading a good book! The latest Outlander book came out, and those books are HUGE, so it took me a while....and this is what I come back to? I'm surprised no CMs had anything to say to him!

Thankfully the rain had stopped when we walked over to the new area of France. Our BG hadn’t been called but we decided hang out near the attraction and wait.

View attachment 604790

View attachment 604791

It is a quaint alcove, though missing a lot of the elaborate detailing found in original World Showcase countries. It’s easy to spot cut corners. But it was new and unfamiliar so we didn’t mind waiting.

View attachment 604793

The left entrance is for those who purchase Individual Lightning Lane. (I love that the abbreviation for this is ILL, because it makes me ILL to pay a surcharge for an attraction!) The right entrance is for guests with boarding groups. There is no option to ride standby.

About 15 minutes later our group was finally called. I didn’t anticipate having to wait in a long line once our group was called, yet here we were.

View attachment 604792

It’s hard to describe the interior part of the queue. The beginning was a whole lot of nothing….except red wallpaper. And narrow passages. After 25 minutes in line we were happy to see something (I believe @sheriffwoody referred to it as the rooftop reveal.)

View attachment 604794

The artist studio is right before the load area. I’m not sure where the merge with ILL guests occurs, but it would be a shame if they miss it. It’s cool.

View attachment 604795

View attachment 604796

The load area is dark and I was juggling 3D glasses so no pics. Each rat vehicle has two rows and Woody and I sat in front. The second row is elevated so all guests have a decent view of the giant screens.

Ahh, the screens. I knew Ratatouille was a screen-based attraction but I was hoping that it wouldn’t aggravate my motion sensitivity. (I can ride MMRR without any issues.)

I think I lasted 20 seconds before needing to shut my eyes. The 3D effects, coupled with the quick motion, were too intense for my brain (the reason I typically skip Star Tours and Flight of Passage.) Every few moments I’d open my eyes to try again, but nope! I’m sure the attraction is adorable (the parts I saw were) but I. Just. Can’t. Do. It. The ride even affected Woody, who is not prone to motion sickness.

Ratatouille is a one two and done for me. (I told Em I would ride it with her.)
We had the exact same thing when we rode it in DLP. All 4 of us got motion sickness from it, and I'm the only one who usually has issues with motion sickness. It was a one and done for us.

Extra Magic had officially started following our spin around Tomorrowland. Woody and I were amazed at how quickly the park had emptied of day guests. There was no crowd at all in the castle hub as we crossed it. We did not have a set plan for attractions, other than doing those I like best at night.

Since Peoplemover was now crossed off my list, we headed for @tonystark ‘s home away from home.

Only she wasn’t there.

But someone else was! She was taking a picture of the Mansion when I surprised her.

We began chick chatting and our fellas did too. (Not sure what to call a male version of chick chatting? 🧐) But we didn’t want to waste ride time so we walked and talked as we entered HM with no wait at all.

Playful spooks stole my ride photo but left Linda’s alone.

It's actually a little frightening. The night I describe in my TR trying to push the stroller up stream was a little scary. And even with cell phones etc. to stay in touch, it's a little disconcerting when staff basically forces you to go in a direction away from family.
We had it happen one time to us years ago exiting a movie theater. There was actually a coat room and when we exited they were trying to get us to go towards the doors but our coats were inside, and it was February in PA.

The four of us headed for our next attraction. The walkways were barren and reminded me of my first pandemic trip right after the parks reopened….only I never got to experience the parks in the dark, as they closed early.

We felt like celebrities.

Fave of my faves to do at night.

Our new friends graciously allowed us the last car. To say I had fun is an understatement!

In hindsight we should have asked if we could ride again. Very few people were waiting to board when our train pulled into the station.

I just got back from WDW late last night, so I logged into your TR first thing today to see where you were at and was thrilled to find our meet ups!!! We had sooo much fun chatting in the parks and getting to experience the rides with you and Woody. The crowds at the firework show were truly a mob scene! I'm glad Woody was able to finally find you after swimming upstream with the crowds. This trip was one of our best because we got the chance to get to know you both. Hope we can make it happen again in the future. 🥰
