Trip Report We Kept Genie in the Lamp *COMPLETED*

50 years later, what goes around comes around.

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 with an admission charge and an attraction ticket system. Admission got you into the park (and onto the free If You Had Wings, sponsored by Eastern Airlines) but every ride required a separate ticket (A,B,C,D,E) which varied in price based on the attraction’s “value.” E-tickets were the most expensive (this is where the expression “it’s an E-ticket ride!” originated) and cost 90 cents apiece. Ticket books bundled A-E together for a reduced cost, but there were never enough E’s (and always leftover A’s and B’s.) Not to worry though ~ each land had its own ticket booth (think tiny kiosk) where individual attraction tickets could be purchased (assuming your parents said yes. 😉)

This was the system for over a decade. The introduction of all-day Passports (and eventual Park Hoppers) was a welcome relief for guests ~ ride what you want as many times as you want for no additional cost. Yes, you had to wait in line. Lines that often were very long. But it was a SIMPLE system.

When Fastpass was introduced at the turn of the century, it required some strategic planning and lots of extra walking to obtain the paper FPs in order to “skip” a line. Fastpass+ exacerbated strategic planning to a whole ‘nother level. But it was a FREE system.

Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane have thrown SIMPLE and FREE out the window. And now in 2021, we’re back to admission and paying for attractions.

But not us.

At least not this trip.

This vacation was a respite for me as I grieve the recent loss of my father. It was a time for memories and nostalgia. A time for keeping things simple.

I’m ready to share if you’re ready to read.

There was about a half hour left until park closing. @lindawdw and her hubby were interested in riding 7DMT or Space Mountain. Woody and I didn’t want to be party poopers, but we were pooped. So we bid goodnight to our friends, happy to have gotten to enjoy Evening Extra Magic with them. We agreed this was better than a paid after hours event….this was free!

Woody caught me lost in thought on our way out.

Thursday, October 28 **BONUS DAY**

I was pleasantly surprised when I awakened and it was not storming outside. The weather was predicted to be rainy with blustery winds (a chance of tornadoes) ~ and the reason we had extended our stay. Since Woody had planned to return to work on Friday….now the day we’d be driving home…he needed to work today. He got an early start while I went to get us breakfast.

Hmmm…wonder what caused this mess in the hallway?

Then it occurred to me to LOOK UP…..

Now tiles don’t ordinarily just drop down from the ceiling, so there must have been a heck of a party on the third floor!

I headed out. The sky was gray but all was dry.

There was a big ruckus on these boards about the removal of a tree in this location. Can’t even tell there used to be a tree covering up those windows. I’m sure the guests in ‘Ohana don’t mind an unobstructed view!

I thought this sign was random and weird. After returning home I read about a resort scavenger hunt that was due to start up soon, another 50th celebration thing.

First the ceiling tile in the hallway, now the tiki torches…..

But Orange Shirt was on the job!

Guessing the pool would not see much activity today.

I meant to mention in my post above that my “rope dropping” occurred during regular park opening at 9 am. I did not make it to early entry. By 9:30 I had ridden two rides, stopped to take pictures and visited the restroom (twice!)

Where to next?

Standby was posted 45 minutes. Actual wait was 15.

The young adult CM stationed in the load area did not sprinkle pixie dust on my lap bar…..yet it magically lowered anyway. 😉

Proof that I was in a pirate ship. (You don’t need to see another selfie!)

Then I walked across the way to IASW. I was so happy to see the colorful paint, reminiscent of the way the attraction looked originally, before it was repainted to look like Disneyland's.

Another selfie....despite what I said earlier.

I may have shared this before, but I became enamored with this doll on my 1st visit as a child and she has been my favorite ever since.

It should come as no surprise as that girl grew up to be Tuvalu!

As often happens when exiting the mansion, I was greeted by a downpour…..and was thankful for my trusty umbrella.

I remembered there was something I needed to do which would get me out of the heavy rain for a few minutes.

I popped in here.

Thanks, @wdisney9000. If you hadn’t posted a picture of your special 50th Passholder card, I would not have known it existed.

I'm glad I actually posted something that made your day better, rather than my usual posts which make you want to plant me 6 feet under a lettuce patch 😁.

I ventured back out into the rain. I crossed the Liberty Square bridge, the castle hub and the Tomorrowland bridge in attempt to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg.

Let’s just say my joystick was broken. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Speaking of broken ~ do you see a ride photo? Didn’t think so.

The Peoplemover is not always a good choice for staying out of the rain. I have gotten wet via leaks in the overhead covering and from rain blowing in sideways. But the rain had slowed to a sprinkle so I figured I’d take my chances.

Tunnel lights on again, just like last night. Maybe they never went off?
