WDWMAGIC Takes the Cake - The Official Cake Talk

Yeah- I've heard AKL can sometimes be a bit "different" with their cakes. I do like the re-envisioned surprise.

I'm under the weather right now :hungover: but will do my best to research if you need additional help.
Thanks! I hope you feel better soon. I'm going to go with it as a surprise for me and him. I may call back next week just to confirm the words and cake flavor etc. The lady I ordered from had a thick accent and she and I had some trouble communicating. We'll see. Thanks again for all your help.

the mickey delight mini cake was kind of what i was considering getting anyway, but i was hoping to mimic our wedding cake. it was all white with green ivy and white flowers. the main flower in our bouquets was orange roses; i was hoping for a couple of piped on white flowers and orange mickeys.

It still can't hurt to ask. I mean, they may do it if they don't feel the decorations are overly involved. See my next post and you'll see that they're deviating from some of this a bit...although, it also makes me wonder based on the next cake's creator.

A small cake update...

12445251293_f0a404f780_z.jpg

The cake above was made by the Contemporary bakery - at some point over this past weekend. While it is a very simple cake, it is clearly not just a basic Mickey Delight. It was $35...and here's the kicker...the person said it was created by Chef Brian! I'm guessing this was a temporary thing as Chef Brian is supposedly no longer doing cakes for orders like this through the Contemporary. Curious...very curious.

Hello everyone! I'll preface this by saying I have seen some amazing cakes in this thread! I am so excited to be going back to WDW in September! I need some help though. My wife and I will be celebrating our tenth anniversary. I am hoping to make this a trip she will never forget. She is an absolute Beauty and the Beast fan and loves Belle. I am looking for ideas for a cake that would say 10 years, be somewhat more mature than your typical Belle and Beast cake (shes not as childlike in nature as I am), and yet suit both her and myself, after all, it is a celebration of us. Betsyboo suggesting I come visit you!!

@RH Kelly I have an idea that I'm hoping you like and hoping they can do, but I will have to post the details later as I need to add in some pictures and my phone just doesn't like that. More tonight :)

I can't wait!!!

OK, I have 2 main ideas and some secondary ideas in case the main one doesn't suit your interests or the bakery can't do my main idea.

As soon as I thought "mature Beauty and the Beast" as well as anniversary, I pictured the stained glass...

My hope is that the bakeries have access to this artwork so they could make edible images.

Now here's where it gets tricky...I think it would be nice to see the stained glass split up into 4 or 5 separate edible images...and have each image bordered in a thin edible frame and tinted/shimmered to sort of look like the metallic edging on stained glass. The cake could be covered in pretty much any color fondant, but right now I'm seeing blue in my mind. On top of the cake would be the 3D white chocolate Belle topper- edged in gold or silver- and surrounded by red edible sugar roses.

I know it's probably not the easiest thing to visualize, but I'm hoping DD7s 5th bday cake below will better explain it...
6063052996_8aa7c881a1.jpg

In your cake...I'd leave the Belle topper and flowers on top as is...as I could see that being appropriate for a child or an adult. As for the rest of the cake...instead of marbled yellow fondant, picture a marbling of dark and medium blue rolled fondant icing. As for the gold framed characters on the cake...swap those out with the stained glass segments...and just try and picture smaller gaps between the images or a greater number of images. Of course, this idea hinges on them being able to get the edible images of the stained glass.

If you're not into the 3D topper, you could see if they could make this part of the stained glass a 2D stand up topper w/roses...
upload_2014-2-14_19-42-16.jpeg
...and then just decide if you want more images around the sides of the cake or keep it more simple with more red roses around the base.

The rest of my ideas involve the same topper elements (i.e. Belle with the roses or the 2D stained glass), but you could go for a much more subdued and mature cake design if you think the stained glass on the sides is too much or too juvenile (or if they can't do it)...or if skipping it altogether is too dull.

Alternate Suggestion 1- Filigree/Painted Roses

The bakeries that do wedding cakes (GF/BW) would be more likely to be able to do this technique, but I wouldn't rule out the other bakeries.

Alternate Suggestion 2- Piped Scroll Work

They might even be able to work in a few small roses into the mix to tie it in with Belle's roses. The color could also be just about anything that's complimentary to the top.

Alternate Suggestion 3- Molded floral

Best bet here is the bakeries that handle weddings, but these molds/cutters are very common cake tools and if they have one that's roses...it might make for a nice complimentary base design on the cake. Again- you could consider any complimentary colors.

Alternate Suggestion 4- Brush Embroidery Roses

If they're willing to do this technique, they could likely do it with red roses to set off the theme.

Alternate Suggestion 5- (and it's a long shot) Rose Covered Piping

It's a fairly simple technique, but I've never seen the Disney bakeries do it. Still, if they're willing to...darker and lighter yellow roses might look nice...kind of a yellow version of that first 2-tone pink cake.

I hope this isn't too much info, but I wanted to give you a variety of ideas.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any clarification/more info. You at least have plenty of time before you need the cake.

I absolutely LOVE the stained glass idea!! Not sure abot the topper, was thinking maybe having the rose as the topper. Thoughts?

You definitely could do a rose topper. The cake below is the only one coming to mind that I've seen done with the single rose....

Obviously, the rest of the cake would incorporate the stained glass idea, but you could definitely do the rose on top. Now, hopefully they have access to the stained glass to make the edible images.

That right there with the stained glass would be incredible....

I think I'd read that you're going in September. I usually recommend people start the ordering process about 2-3 weeks out from the date you need the cake. While I recommend the same thing for you, I would suggest you reach out to the bakery ahead of time to see if they have access to the stained glass Beauty and the Beast images. If for some reason they don't, this will at least give you ample time to come up with a plan B for your design.

That's our cake! We had it made by the Yacht & Beach Club bakery delivered to the Yachtsman. The scroll work on top was cool. Our initials were incorporated. This cake was so pretty. Don't remember how much it was. Taste was okay, not great. The cake was fine, they just don't do the super-sweet American buttercream I prefer so the cakes will always only be okay to me. Recently I was reading a custom cake order form from somewhere on site at Disneyland in California. In their cake flavors/options they list American buttercream and American chocolate buttercream along with traditional buttercream and traditional chocolate buttercream. ;)

Darn- I thought I'd tagged you in this! Ugh...I swear, 7 hours of cleaning yesterday rotted my brain. Definitely the best BatB rose example I've seen one of the WDW bakeries incorporated into a cake.

Funny that you bring up the California options as I think I'd seen that come up on one of the wedding blogs. It figures that they'd have more options.

This has probably been asked a thousand times, but need to ask again. Will be in Disney later this year to celebrate a major anniversary with family, but the guests of honor are diabetic and don't care for icing that is extremely sweet (they loved the strawberry cupcake from Boardwalk bakery). It is a big anniversary so would like to get a special cake for the occasion, but last time we had one, (in Epcot at a restaurant) it was excessively sweet. Can anyone recommend a place at Disney to get a cake where it is not going to be so exceptionally and excessively sweet. Or are they all like that no matter where you go.

The various Disney bakeries that offer custom cakes are all supposed to be using the same recipes. I haven't seen any of the Disney bakeries openly offer sugar free or lower sugar options. I do know that a number of the restaurant chefs do offer sugar free dessert options though, so it can't hurt to ask. You could reach out to one of them and see if they have any unlisted options that might be diabetic friendly. Alternately, if they liked a product from the Boardwalk Bakery, you might even consider reaching out to that specific bakery to see if they'd be willing to translate that cupcake they enjoyed into a custom cake. While it's not overly common, we do now and then see some custom cakes that look more like bakery case style cakes vs. special occasion cakes.

Another alternative is contacting Baby Cakes...

http://www.babycakesnyc.com/downtown-disney-orlando-fl.html

They use agave to sweeten a number of their products. I know some manufacturers list it as diabetic friendly; however, the American Diabetes Association lists agave as one of the sweeteners that diabetics should limit. Regardless, Babycakes tries to accommodate a number of dietary concerns, so they may be able to help and they do deliver to the Disney spots...although, their cake decorating is definitely not to the same level as the Disney bakeries.

Small cake update...

Saw this chocolate ganache covered cake from the GF...
e8d0d05d-78c5-475d-b1a6-bd6b72822204_zpsb72583ae.jpg

Saw this cake yesterday...it has the castle on top, but what struck me as interesting was that they added bows to some of the mouse heads on the Mickey delight style...making it a Mickey/Minnie delight...

And now for some cute non-WDW bakery stuff...

If you've got a supermarket bakery that does cupcake cakes...you might be able to get them to do something like this...
