Thanks! I don't work for any of the Disney bakeries (although, my mom had a dream I left my job and moved to FL to decorate Disney cakes), but I do custom cakes as a hobby and side job at home- when not working my full time job. I became kind of obsessed with Disney cakes back when I designed DD7's bday cake for our 2011 trip. We've had cakes every trip since and I've helped a number of my friends order cakes for their Disney trips. I started to notice a number of cake questions popping up on here 6 months ago or so, but we really didn't have any major cake resources on here. Another very popular Disney forum has a cake chatter, so I figured it might be nice to have something like that on WDW Magic so I wasn't having to recommend people check out other sites/forums. I know lots of people celebrate all kinds of special events at WDW, so it just seemed like it would be helpful to people.

BTW- love the mini wedding cakes. It really is a surprising amount of cake for something so seemingly small. It also has lots of decorating potential :)

neat! i'm going to have to figure out where we'll eat that night and then figure out which bakery will handle it and then figure out if they can theme it like our wedding cake with a disney flair. shouldn't be too hard. our wedding cake was white with orange flowers. maybe i can do white with orange mickeys :D

Keep on top of them. We had trouble getting call backs, but we were rather persistent in calling. Everything turned out fine. :)

This factor alone is why I like to put in my order 2-3 weeks out. Not enough time for them to lose my order, but just enough time to play a frustrating game of phone and email tag to ensure things are in place before your trip. Honestly, I think that is probably the most maddening part of the process. I love your cake though! I think it's the first time I've seen that concept in the mini wedding cake.

Thanks! The cake design was my wife's idea after looking at various pictures of Disney cakes. I admit I was skeptical at first but it came out great, and was the perfect size for 3 people.

Just a little update...

cake4.jpg

The mini cake above was made by the GF bakery and cost $60. I've seen prices on these little cakes be all over the place. I've seen basic cakes with just the castle go for as little as $35, but I guess all of the extra pirate theme details added on an extra $25?

Next cake...

It's a 6" cake from the Contemporary bakery with Bavarian cream filling...$125. It's not an overly involved design, but I'm guessing the fondant and white chocolate used for the topper piece increased the cost.

I was at Disney two weeks ago with my DH and my birthday happen to fall during our trip so I took full advantage to finally order a custom cake. I made dinner reservation for the night after we arrived at the Cape May Cafe. We were staying at Beach Club so we would be able to bring it back to room and not carry around all night plus it was beginning of our trip so we had 10 days to eat it!! I asked for the 6in cake, 3D white chocolate Donald (mine and DH favorite), red velvet cake with an Oreo cooking mousse filling. I asked for regular frosting as I did not think traditional cream cheese frosting would go with the filling. I asked for the Disney cruise theme since last Sept we went on our first cruise (Disney Dream). Also Donald Duck is the admiral o the Dream.

I was very very pleased with the results top of cake had a fondant layer which was made to look like a wooden deck of a ship, the life preservers are made of fondant with the DCL logo screen printed, the roses were made from some type of sugar base (btw my favorite flower DH had a dozen waiting in room for me) side of cake in frosting as I asked to limit the fondant covering, and of course the red velvet cake with oreo mousse filling (i requested this filling was not given as option and they verified w baker they could do it)
$80 total ($25 of that was for Donald which they wanted $125 if painted)

Figured I'd look into more wedding cakes as I'm waiting on the Super Bowl to start. I find so much inspiration in wedding cakes as great concepts can often be incorporated into a smaller special occasion cake. I also just love the idea of having an even grand/large enough to justify this much cake. I'd probably be much better at building cake support structures if I had more events that required big cakes. The reality, a 6"-8" cake feeds a lot of people.

So, here are a whole bunch of WDW made wedding cakes. Some are very obviously Disney while some have little to no Disney...yet could easily become Disney with a few changes. I literally found a treasure trove of pics...so this is likely a first installment of many. :)

This first one is a snow covered castle cake...

OK- that's it for now, but there are quite a few more that I will post over time.

A word of caution on sculpted cakes...the GF is your best shot if you really want something sculpted, but expect to pay a hefty premium. This honestly is true of sculpted cakes everywhere. Cake sculpting is not easy business and most places will assess a significant upcharge for something like this (I know I do). i.e. you might be looking at a $400-800 sculpted cake instead of a $80-150 for a standard round.

Cupcakes...there are LOTS of really fun cupcakes they'll do for weddings, but they will almost always reject your pleas if you want them for a non-wedding occasion. Still, you could incorporate these ideas into a small cake.

OK- that's it for now :)

Hi @HouCuseChickie I'm trying to get my order in for my anniversary cake at Cali Grill. I'm a little confused. I asked for a mini wedding cake but asked if they could ice it in blue with some Up! balloons up the side and the grape soda pin on top. They said no. No customizing that size cake. I've seen others that looked a lot more customized than that. Am I asking too much for the mini cake or have I gotten someone who doesn't have good info. My communication was by email. Thanks!

@Betsyboo who is handling your email correspondence? Is it Chef Donald? Regardless, I'd call them out on it. I'd tell them unless they changed their policy in the last week, you know the info they're giving is incorrect. Go on to tell them that you know others who have ordered customized mini wedding cakes from them within the last few months...maybe go on to offer pictures as proof this is very much something they do. If they are not helpful, try calling and see what the people on the phone in private dining have to say. They may take your detailed request that way. Ugh...so frustrating. Keep me posted.

No it's not Chef Donald. Her title is Chef Assistant, Cake Decorator. It's really frustrating. I am just going to call private dining. I'm not sure I can get my point across via email. Thanks and I'll let you know what happens.
