@HouCuseChickie Ok, got the call back from the cake line. The person was definitely not someone that knew what they were talking about. He tried to give me the email address again but I told him I'd already gone that route. He said they'd stopped customizing in the last few weeks. Really? Not sure about that one.

No word yet, but I found someone else waiting on a call back concerning a custom order for a mini cake at the Contemporary...so I want to see what she hears. There's one other person I'm hoping gets back with me by tomorrow as she tends to have a lot of inside info. If worse comes to worse, I may email the chef...but I don't want to jump to that just yet since you're technically not supposed to be emailing them directly unless they've reached out to you and are handling your cake order.

While I do have to work tomorrow, I will be monitoring things. I'm stuck posting from my phone when I'm at work and it doesn't always play well with this site, but I'll do my best to keep you updated.

Thanks so much. I'm glad I started early. I hate to bother you with this. I really appreciate all the help.

Ok the bad news...it is true. It is a very new policy, but as far as my source (Carrie/LuI'll post more tonight.loo) can tell...it's only a limitation being instituted by the Contemporary bakery. She suspects it's due to...
1. the increased demand for mini cakes
2. possibly the recent complaints over their bakey's decorating quality

I'm pretty bummed about this, but while these reasons are mainly speculation...there is some truth to it. I've been following Disney cakes since 2011, and i've seen a huge jump in mini cakes. I also was disappointed with a number of things on my most recent Contemporary cakes.

I'm going to post a more formal write up on this tonight. I just wish I had better news for you guys :( I do have an idea that may work, but it may be a bit too contrived. I am really hoping this is a temporary thing, but I'm not overly optimistic.

Either way, ill post more tonight[/USER]

BREAKING NEWS

NO MORE CUSTOMIZED MINI CAKES FROM THE CONTEMPORARY BAKERY

We're not sure exactly why they've stopped offering this service, but many are speculating that it relates to the increased demand for mini cakes as well as an increase in complaints in the overall decorating quality of the cakes being turned out by the Contemporary.

The main impact...

All Restaurants at the Contemporary
All Restaurants at Wilderness Lodge/Ft Wilderness
All Magic Kingdom Restaurants
Contemporary/BLT guests
Wilderness Lodge/WLV/Ft Wilderness guests
Guests picking up cakes at The Wave
Guests getting cakes for Contemporary based specialty cruises

So, you're probably asking what you can order from them if you want a mini. Well, you can order a Mickey Delight...and that's pretty much it. Here are some examples of what you will be limited to when ordering...

CRStandardMiniCake2.jpg

If you are thinking of upgrading to a larger cake to get the customization you desire, I must warn you that unlike the other bakeries- the Contemporary will often insist guests order a minimum of an 8" cake if you want elaborate decorations.

As far as we know, these new limitations are only being instituted by the Contemporary. Ex. you could still probably get a fully customized mini wedding cake from the GF bakery. In fact, most of the other bakeries will also do highly customized 6" cakes. So, very important update to keep in mind when looking into your cake plans.

Now to more positive things...

OK...here are my thoughts. Obviously, you have the option of ordering a more basic mini cake in the style shown above or you could order a larger cake that they're willing to customize. Another option is ordering through your resort. Yes, it would have to be delivered to your resort, but the Port Orleans resorts are serviced by the Boardwalk Bakery and as far as we know- they are still willing to do customized minis. Sorry my post earlier was a bit of a jumbled mess, but it never turns out well when I try to post anything from my phone.

@HouCuseChickie you're the best! your obsession with all things disney cake is such an amazing resource for us.

Thanks! I really do love cake, but I know how difficult this process can be...so, if I can make it any easier for others...well, I'm happy. :)

Doing a different restaurant would definitely be another option. There is also going with a larger cake, but the Contemporary is notorious for asking that people order 8" or larger for custom cakes. Having ordered several 8" cakes... it's a lot of cake. Of course, I tend to disregard that and just go for overall presentation. Maybe this is why I always make cakes that could feed 30 when I only need to feed 5 or 6 people. LOL :p

Thanks. I really appreciate your help. I'm going to take a look at our ADRs and decide on something. I'm surprising DH with the Wild Africa Trek Tour and the night before we have dinner at Sanaa. I'll take a look at the first page of the thread and see what AKL Bakery can do. Maybe I'll give them a call and do something special to go along with the AK theme. If that doesn't work, I may just do the delivery to the resort.

@PigletIsMyCat Hopefully the Contemporary will go back to customizing cakes before your trip.

I'll let you know what I decide and definitely let you know how things turn out. Thanks again!

I can't believe I never posted our cake from last spring! The cake is a little blurry as I had to move quickly before the birthday boy grabbed and ate Peter Pan!! Jake & the Neverland Pirates theme, by Chef Brian @ Contemporary, delivered to Chef Mickey's for a birthday celebration.

My only requests were "not fondant, vanilla cake, chocolate mousse filling, Jake & the Neverland Pirates", and Chef Brian did an awesome job (though we ended up w/vanilla frosting inside, not chocolate mousse filling, the rest was so wonderful we didn't even bother bringing it up). It was an 8" cake, served all 8 in our party and we still had leftovers for the next two days!!

Cake was $62 before tax & gratuity. As an aside, it was quoted as $107 with fondant. When I requested no fondant (my kids don't like the taste/texture), it dropped to $62. We loved this cake!!

@HouCuseChickie It's me again. I've called the AKL Bakery. These are the options I was given and thought I'd share:

Celebrate Today Cake - $23 This is the basic "podium" cake I think.
Zebra Cake - $43
Mickey Cake - $52
Customized Cake $35 She said this is to customize cake and filling flavors. Screen prints were quoted at $15.

I explained about the surprise Wild Africa Trek etc. and she offered a safari animal themed cake at $60-$65. She also offered fondant for $10 additional.

The only confusion is the size. She said the smallest they had was 8" which would serve up to 10 people. I didn't think they had 8" only 6". Oh well, more to eat the next day for breakfast.

Even with explaining that there were only two of us she didn't budge on size etc.

So, I'm thinking this is the route I'm going to go. Probably just as cheap (or maybe cheaper) than having a cake from the Boardwalk delivered to POFQ. Plus, it will incorporate the surprise for the tour.

Yeah- I've heard AKL can sometimes be a bit "different" with their cakes. I do like the re-envisioned surprise.

I'm under the weather right now :hungover: but will do my best to research if you need additional help.
