Trip Report UPDATE 11/2 "Anyone have change for $100?" It's all about the Bennys, baby! A Girls Cruise TR!

Hey everyone! Since we’ve been back from this trip for over 6 months now and I’ve taken another WDW trip and another cruise, I figured it was time to write this report! I’m not sure I have ever anticipated a trip to WDW more in my life than I anticipated this one! Was it because I was going to be going on my first Disney cruise (and first cruise EVER!!)? Is it because I would finally get to stay at my dream resort, the Polynesian? Was it because I was finally getting to meet all these awesome gals from WDWMagic in person for the first time? Well…. I’d like to think it was a combo of ALL of those things! :)

When I first read about the girls cruise, it was October 2011, almost a full 2 years before the cruise was planned. I did some creeping on the thread before I actually even thought about joining in. I was still sort of “new” to the boards and wasn’t sure I would “fit in” so to speak. The more I read about it, the more fun it sounded. I ran the idea past my mother and my sister to see if they would like to go and sure enough, they were in! We officially booked the first of January! We planned on staying 1 night pre-cruise and 3 nights post cruise so our trip would be Saturday Sept 7-Sunday Sept 15. We rented points for Bay Lake Tower after the cruise and had originally booked Wilderness Lodge for before the cruise. My sister and I decided to switch it up and change WL to the Polynesian because A – It’s my dream resort and B – We wanted to celebrate my Mom’s retirement. So we changed it without her knowing. We were originally going to hide the DME tags from her and tell her on DME since we knew that WL, Contemp, the Poly and GF all shared the same DME. We decided to tell her earlier though at her retirement party. She offered to pay us for her portion but we said no, it was our treat!

Anywho, though the cruise was still over a year and a half away when we booked, the time flew by. Over the course of that year and a half, we had many group chats and chatted in the cruise thread. As the cruise crept closer, I knew that I absolutely could not wait to meet this wonderful group of ladies! I knew it would be the BEST time! And was it ever!!

Saturday Sept 7, 2013 – It’s time! It’s time!!!

My alarm went off bright and early Saturday morning at 2:30am. I was already packed and ready to go so Mom picked us up at 3:30am and we were off! We were flying out of Manchester NH on Southwest. Even though Portland’s airport is literally a mile from our house, Manchester had a non-stop flight, with better flight times and was cheaper. So we made the hour and 20 minutes trek to NH. No biggie!

We arrive at MHT at 5am. We hauled our luggage out of the car (all 10 bags! Eek!!) and waited for the shuttle to the main terminal. The bus driver pulled up and opened the door. As we struggled to get our bags onto the bus, the driver just sat there. No offer to help us, nothing. I have flown out of MHT less than a year earlier and the driver then was super helpful. But not this guy!! Mom got in the bus and we handed all our bags up to her. It took us a few minutes to get everything on and all Mr. Bus Driver did was sit there. This trip was NOT off to a good start! That all changed though after we sat down and “Dude Looks Like a Lady” came on the radio. I immediately thought of Rock N Roller Coaster and the fun week that lay ahead of us and pushed Mr. Bus Driver to the back of my head. I immediately texted @plaz10 and told her. I knew she was awake and either at the airport or on her way and would totally understand my excitement for hearing this song! When we reached the terminal, we schlepped all our bags off and bid Mr. Bus Driver a snarky farewell.

We went into the terminal and the security line was pretty much non-existent. We grabbed some Dunks and waited for boarding.

The flight was uneventful and we landed 20 minutes early! Wooooo!! We arrived at DME, hopped on the bus and headed to WDW at 10:30 on the dot!

Typical DME selfie!!

We're heeeeereeeeee!!

We made a stop at WL first and a part of my heart was sad because we weren’t staying there. As we stopped at the Contemporary, I wondered if we should have just stuck with WL since we knew we liked it. What if we hated the Poly? What if Mom hated it? We knew she loved WL, maybe we shouldn’t have changed it! My mind was busy with these thoughts as we made our way from the Contemp to the Poly, but as we made that right turn, pulled up to the gate and I saw the sign reading Polynesian Resort, all my worries went away. I KNEW we had made the right choice!

We got off the bus and were greeted by the amazing waterfalls and lush greenery of the Poly’s entrance. A CM put lei’s on us and said “welcome home!”. Not going to lie, I teared up just a bit! Mom and Ashley both looked at me waiting for the waterworks but thankfully I had my sunglasses on (It’s kind of a running joke with us that I cry over everything so they always look to see if I’m crying over the smallest little thing! Meanies!!! Haha)

We were led into the lobby where we checked in. The CM was looking for our Magic Bands but I told him we got them already. We had wanted to request Tahiti but it was closed as the Poly was starting to begin it’s refurb! We thought we weren’t going to be able to swim in the volcano pool, but the closure of that was a couple days after we left, so we lucked out! We request Tuvalu instead and were given our request. When we had originally booked, we wanted a standard garden view but when I called, it wasn’t showing up anymore (it was online though) the CM told us she could give us a lagoon view though for just $14 more. Well, you don’t have to twist my arm for that! SOLD! And for only $14 more than a garden view.

We took the long way to Tuvalu so we could take in the grounds of the resort. So beautiful.

We were on the ground floor in Tuvalu room 1413. Mom and Ashley let me open the door and be the first one into the room. As I pushed open the door and walked in, taking in the newly refurbished beautiful room, I could feel the tears again. This time, I didn’t care. I burst into tears and said “I can’t believe we are actually staying here!” Some of you might think I am a little weird, crying because of a resort.. Even though it was only for one night, we were staying at the Polynesian! From my first visit in 2001, when I was just 18 and we saw the luau and I first fell in love with the resort, to the many subsequent trips to Kona Café and Ohana trip after trip, I hoped every time that we would someday be able to stay there! That someday we would be able to just walk back to our room after leaving the Grand Ceremonial House instead of going back to another room at another resort. The Polynesian is more than just a resort to me. It is paradise. It was a place I had my heart set on staying for so many years. A place that I would longingly look at from the monorail as we glided past on the Express beam. I would look down at people wandering the grounds, wondering which building they were staying in and thinking how lucky they were. And now we were the lucky ones! FINALLY!

I took some pictures of the room. I LOVED the size of it!

And I loved the bathroom. The only thing I didn’t like, and I believe @fractal mentioned this in his TR too, that the hook for the towel was on the other side of the wall, next to the toilet. Made it a little hard to reach the towel! Also I wasn’t a fan of the sink IN the bathroom, probably since we’re so used to the sink being outside the bathroom but it was only for one night so it wasn’t really an issue.

The closets were cool and we loved having the couch in the room. Ashley was the tough luck loser who had the couch that night while Mom and I each had the bed. Ahhhhh, lucky us! (I wouldn’t be laughing later on in the trip when I was climbing up and down from the pull down bed on the cruise though…. Meh.)

I had yet to look out at the view, so I pulled the curtains back and actually gasped when I saw the view. Slightly to the left was the wedding pavilion and the Grand Floridian. To the right was the boat dock and the Contemporary and straight ahead was Cinderella Castle. We couldn’t see TOO much of it but had Wishes been scheduled for that night, it would have been perfect. Unfortunately, it was Night of Joy and there were no fireworks. Booooo!! We had other plans anyway but had we not, it would have been awesome to watch Wishes from our patio! (Spoiler alert, we ended up NOT having plans later that night so it was very much a bummer that Wishes wasn’t happening!)

We were starving at that point and didn’t have plans until later that afternoon, so we changed into our swimsuits and headed to the GCH. It was time to try Captain Cook’s!!

There were a couple things I wanted to try but most importantly, I wanted to try the Poly chip! Jess ( @plaz10 ) and I had been discussing these beauties for a bit before the cruise. She was staying at Bay Lake Tower with Siobhan ( @Tiggerish ) that night but we made plans to meet up a bit later. I opted for the Aloha Pork Sandwich which came with Asian slaw on top and the Poly chips!

Ashley got the chicken sandwich and fries and I can’t remember what Mom got. The pork sandwich was delish!! And the Poly chips… Oh Mylanta! Were those delicious! I’m eating some Wasabi almonds right now but boy do I wish I were eating those chips instead! The chips were the first of MANY ridiculously good foods I was going to try over the course of the trip! Ashley like her chicken sandwich and Mom liked… whatever it was that she got!! Lol

I completely understand what you're saying - the amount of the "outside" world that you encounter just outside the DLR gates is unfortunate...But if you DO stay on-property at DLR, in which case you NEVER have to board a motorized vehicle to travel to either of the parks, it is truly a Heavenly experience! :D
I have been both on and off property at DLR several times each, but once you stay on-property there, it is REALLY hard to go back...and it is that much more difficult to deal with the WDW bus rides after being able to walk a few minutes to either of the parks!

We did walk to and from the Grand Californian a few times and it reminded me of staying at the Contemporary at WDW. Such a close walk to MK and the two parks were so close to the GC. We also walked to Trader Sam's the last night and it was super quick. And there was lots of stuff to see since we were walking through Downtown Disney. I can imagine how hard it would be to get back on buses after staying there!

I really need to get out to DL. I hate that it's taken me so long

It was so fun! I'll be writing my TR about it hopefully soon!! :)

Darolyn! It's so good to "see" you again! :)

The Nassau/Nasa discussion made me laugh out loud.

Hi Tammy! Good to see you, too! It's been, what, like a week?! lol

She gives blondes a bad name! haha... She seriously was soooo confused! Once we explained it to her, she totally understood but before she knew she was like "ummmmm.... we're only going that far?!" haha

After the Sail Away party, we went back to the room to get ready for the show and dinner. We had the second seating for dinner at 8:15 and the show was at 6:15 (I do believe those were the times, anyway.) We stood on the balcony and looked out over the water. I have no idea what Ashley is pointing at.. Maybe she's pointing at Nassau / Nasa

The wind got ahold of her hair here.

We headed down to deck 4 and decided to walk outside on deck. It was so pretty out there.

When we reached the outside of the Walt Disney Theater, they had sort of a red carpet set up as the show was the Golden Mickey's. Me, Ashley, @PartOfYourWorld (Jess) and @LuvsTheMouse (Diane) we picked to be interviewed before the show. The lady interviewing us called us the Real Housewives of Disney! lol They showed this footage on the screen in the theater and some of the other girls saw us. It was pretty cool.

The show was really good. I cried at the end when they showed the video montage of Walt. He is the reason we are able to visit WDW and take these cruises and I love the tributes they make to him in the shows and throughout the parks. Without Walt, none of this would be possible. I wouldn't be on this site, typing this report for you all to read.

Anywho, the show was fun and we headed back into the atrium and saw Captain Mickey was going to be out meeting folks and the line was short so we hopped in line! There was a band playing in the atrium and kids and families were out dancing and singing and having fun. The songs were cool the first time around but after hearing them every night, they got kind of annoying. lol

We walked down to The District and checked it out. I made a mental note to check out some of the bars after dinner during the trip! ;)

The shops were kind of crowded but we still had some time before dinner, about 15 minutes but we headed down to deck 2 so we could find Enchanted Garden. It looked so pretty from the outside! I think it was my favorite restaurant, decor wise. Animator's was cool but I loved the garden feel of EG.

At 8:15, the doors opened and the waitstaff came and greeted us and led us to our table. We were seated with Jenelle and her sister Suzanne and an agent for Kingdom Konsultants, Stacey and her friend Liz. All the girls on the cruise had tables right next to each other.

Our waiters were Edi and Piti (Piti wasn't his real name, but it was easier and rhymed with our waiters name so he told us to call him Piti) They were both awesome! This would not be the first encounter we would have with Piti (you'll have to read my February cruise TR when I finish it to see what happens! ;) )

During dinner though, the ships motion got to me a little bit. I started too get a slight headache so I took some Ibuprofen and my headache went away but the rocking of the ship was still messing me up. I wasn't used to it and EG is way down on deck 2. I later learned we were going a little faster than normal to beat some unpleasant weather that was coming at us.

There was so much good looking food on the menu. I had checked them out online before the cruise so I kind of had a feel for what was being offered. For my appetizer, I went with the lobster ravioli. I'm from Maine so lobster is our specialty but surprisingly, I had never had lobster ravioli. It was delicious!!

Ashley got the tomato soup topped with bacon and chive. She said it was really good.

I didn't get any pictures of Mom's appetizer, salad / soup or entree but I know she got the prime rib for her entree. Not sure about the other two. She did enjoy all her food though. For my entree, I got the pork tenderloin with citrus polenta cakes, carrots, parsnips and caramelized Granny Smith apples. I loved pork tenderloin and this was really good! The polenta cakes were a bit different, but good.

Ashley went with her usual favorite - chicken. It was Marjoram chicken breast with baked sweet potatoes and baby spinach. She really enjoyed it.

For dessert, I had seen something on the menu I wanted but I either missed it when it was time to order or it was off the menu (I think I missed it because it was on the menu when we went back in February so clearly I just didn't see it.) I ordered the Sacher torte which was a chocolate torte with apricot sauce. Ashley ordered that as well. It looked yummy but honestly, I thought it was kind of tasteless. The little white fluff thing on the plate had more flavor than the torte (I was like a whipped creme or something) I was disappointed in dessert but the rest of the meal was fantastic! I left very full!!

Mom ordered the steamed lemon buttermilk pudding and she liked it.

I took some pics of the restaurant before we left. Now, throughout the meal, one of the waiters at a nearby table took quite a liking to Ashley. He kept looking at her and smiling. As we were looking at the fountain, he came over (his name was Ivan and he was from Ukraine) and he told us it's a tradition to get your picture taken in front of the fountain. Ashley just laughed and Ivan walked away. She thought it was kind of weird.

We decided to head back to the room and turn in for the night. It was probably around 9:45, I think. When we got back to the room, we had a bunch of fish extender gifts waiting for us! Our stateroom host brought them all in for us and put them on the bed. For the life of me, I cannot remember our stateroom hosts name :( He was really nice though! We also had a cool new towel friend sporting Ashley's sunglasses!

Now remember when I laughed at Ashley because she got stuck on the sofabed at the Poly? Well, I shouldn't have laughed because guess who got stuck on the pull down bed? Yup... I did! I'm sure it was quite the sight watching me climb up and down that ladder. HA!

We had been up since 6:30 and had a busy day tomorrow. We were doing something I have wanted to do forever! I thought I would be too excited to sleep, but I passed out pretty quickly while the Dream rocked me to sleep :) The first day of the cruise had been awesome and I couldn't wait for the next day!

Sorry for the drift but I had to comment...I couldn't identify a parsnip if my life depended on it, but whenever I hear the word, all I can think about is good 'ol Jack Sparrow:
"parsley, parsnip..."..."Parler?"..."Yes, 'Parler', that's it!"

LOL!!!

hahaha. I couldn't identify one either but I guess it's like a turnip? Whatever it was, it was good!

That's another reason why I need to finish my TR- so I can post the pictures from Golden Mickey! The red carpet pictures came out pretty good

Yes, I forgot you got pics of the red carpet! :)

Monday September 9 - Nassau!!

We woke up around 7:30 and got everything ready for our excursion. We decided instead of Cabana's for breakfast we would have the sit down Royal Palace breakfast instead. We got there at 8:15 and were seated immediately. And wouldn't you know, Ashley's waiter friend Ivan was there and he came over and said hi to her! hehe.

This was order off the menu so we placed our orders and the assistant server brought us over some pastries. Mmmmm... love Disney's chocolate croissants!

Ashley and Mom ordered the 2 egg breakfast (of course Ashley ordered that! lol) We also got some mimosas!

I ordered the french toast stack and and pineapple stack.. oh my goodness was it delicious!! It wasn't exactly typical french toast, but it was yummy!

We had some time before we had to meet for our excursion in the Buena Vista Theater at 9:15 so we wandered up to decks 11 and 12.

Bonus points for anyone who can name the cartoon playing on the funnel vision! :)

An empty Donald pool.

Even though it was on and off cloudy, the view of Atlantis was pretty :) (I left my DSLR in the room for the day so we had my sisters point and shoot and a waterproof camera since our excursion would be in the water!)

We headed to the BVT and got our stickers for our excursion group. We were in group Pluto! Woof! We waited for everyone to file in and listened to some instructions. Then we were led out of the theater and off the ship. We got our wristbands when we got outside.

We had to take a boat to our excursion so we boarded and enjoyed the sites of Nassau and the clear blue ocean water.

Loved the colors of these houses.

Oh, Darolyn, I am so enjoying this TR, it's like re-living the cruise all over again!! That banner is sitting with my luggage, just waiting for the next Girls Cruise (a little duct tape and whiteout will take care of the date! ;) )

Add me to the list of those who whooped at Nassau/NASA. Hopefully for Ashley, she will live it down someday. :D

Enchanted Garden was my favorite dinner, as well. Loved it again when I cruised with hubby last February, when I cried at the Golden Mickeys for a second time. I think that one is my favorite of the three shows.

Dinner at Enchanted Garden looks awesome! Can't wait to see how the excursion went. :)

It was great! All the food on the ship was excellent!! I could go for some BBQ Chicken Pizza from Flo's right now... Mmmm.... yum!

Siobhan! I'm glad you have time to read my TR between all your trips to the Boardwalk! ;)

The banner can definitely be used year after year! and it captures so well on the port cam, too!

Ashley has many things she says that just... are not ... right. lol We call them Ashleyisms. She had a GREAT one at DLR last week but I cannot disclose it until the trip report! I laughed so hard at it though! She gets a kick out of her own mistakes though too so it's all good!

I also think the Golden Mickeys was my favorite, as well. Villains Tonight was good too. They're both so different. Believe was definitely my least favorite. Can't wait to see the other shows on the Fantasy this fall!

Darolyn! Long time, no see! As promised, I'm keeping up with the reading just not the posting.

I love that we're still reliving the awesomeness of last year's inaugural adventure! I'd like to thank you for NOT writing this report sooner. ;)

I'm so super excited to hear all about your Nassau excursion. Very curious.

Ashley-isms. Hahaha! Love it! She's the best!

So get cracking! Let's go see what Nassau has in store for you!

haha yup! Planning for spring, February right now I think. It really is just sooooo different than WDW. One thing I didn't like about DLR was that if you don't stay on property, you have to return to the "real world" every night after you leave the parks. There's an IHOP and Denny's right across from the entrance and after staying at WDW on property where you don't see any of those things, it's a bit different. I love WDW in the sense that once you're on property, you don't see the real world until you either choose to go somewhere else like Uni or Sea World or until the DME takes you to the airport.

We are also going to plan to go mid-November next year, too. I want to see it all done up for Christmas! I have seen pics of Carsland at Christmas and it looks awesome!

I can definitely see how you would feel that way. I love the bubble that WDW places us in. And Christmas in Disneyland will be awesome!!!! Tom Bricker's pictures from there at Christmas are gorgeous (which I assume you have seen his as well) That is going to be awesome!

hah i love how we were called the Real Housewives of Disney! I think Kelly said it, thanks for writing this trip report later so we can relive it all over again!!! It's great to see everyone's different perspectives!

I loved the soup Ashley had at Enchanted Garden..I think I had ordered it again on the last night! I love how you can order form the different restaurants if you like something else there.

Oh Ivan....LOL. Laughing at the things you told me at PF Changs last month...can't wait to see you again!!!

I love how you took a boat over to Atlantis! That looked like it gave beautiful views! Because when Mike and I went over I did NOT like taking a bus!
