Trip Report UPDATE 11/2 "Anyone have change for $100?" It's all about the Bennys, baby! A Girls Cruise TR!

Hey everyone! Since we’ve been back from this trip for over 6 months now and I’ve taken another WDW trip and another cruise, I figured it was time to write this report! I’m not sure I have ever anticipated a trip to WDW more in my life than I anticipated this one! Was it because I was going to be going on my first Disney cruise (and first cruise EVER!!)? Is it because I would finally get to stay at my dream resort, the Polynesian? Was it because I was finally getting to meet all these awesome gals from WDWMagic in person for the first time? Well…. I’d like to think it was a combo of ALL of those things! :)

When I first read about the girls cruise, it was October 2011, almost a full 2 years before the cruise was planned. I did some creeping on the thread before I actually even thought about joining in. I was still sort of “new” to the boards and wasn’t sure I would “fit in” so to speak. The more I read about it, the more fun it sounded. I ran the idea past my mother and my sister to see if they would like to go and sure enough, they were in! We officially booked the first of January! We planned on staying 1 night pre-cruise and 3 nights post cruise so our trip would be Saturday Sept 7-Sunday Sept 15. We rented points for Bay Lake Tower after the cruise and had originally booked Wilderness Lodge for before the cruise. My sister and I decided to switch it up and change WL to the Polynesian because A – It’s my dream resort and B – We wanted to celebrate my Mom’s retirement. So we changed it without her knowing. We were originally going to hide the DME tags from her and tell her on DME since we knew that WL, Contemp, the Poly and GF all shared the same DME. We decided to tell her earlier though at her retirement party. She offered to pay us for her portion but we said no, it was our treat!

Anywho, though the cruise was still over a year and a half away when we booked, the time flew by. Over the course of that year and a half, we had many group chats and chatted in the cruise thread. As the cruise crept closer, I knew that I absolutely could not wait to meet this wonderful group of ladies! I knew it would be the BEST time! And was it ever!!

Saturday Sept 7, 2013 – It’s time! It’s time!!!

My alarm went off bright and early Saturday morning at 2:30am. I was already packed and ready to go so Mom picked us up at 3:30am and we were off! We were flying out of Manchester NH on Southwest. Even though Portland’s airport is literally a mile from our house, Manchester had a non-stop flight, with better flight times and was cheaper. So we made the hour and 20 minutes trek to NH. No biggie!

We arrive at MHT at 5am. We hauled our luggage out of the car (all 10 bags! Eek!!) and waited for the shuttle to the main terminal. The bus driver pulled up and opened the door. As we struggled to get our bags onto the bus, the driver just sat there. No offer to help us, nothing. I have flown out of MHT less than a year earlier and the driver then was super helpful. But not this guy!! Mom got in the bus and we handed all our bags up to her. It took us a few minutes to get everything on and all Mr. Bus Driver did was sit there. This trip was NOT off to a good start! That all changed though after we sat down and “Dude Looks Like a Lady” came on the radio. I immediately thought of Rock N Roller Coaster and the fun week that lay ahead of us and pushed Mr. Bus Driver to the back of my head. I immediately texted @plaz10 and told her. I knew she was awake and either at the airport or on her way and would totally understand my excitement for hearing this song! When we reached the terminal, we schlepped all our bags off and bid Mr. Bus Driver a snarky farewell.

We went into the terminal and the security line was pretty much non-existent. We grabbed some Dunks and waited for boarding.

The flight was uneventful and we landed 20 minutes early! Wooooo!! We arrived at DME, hopped on the bus and headed to WDW at 10:30 on the dot!

Typical DME selfie!!

We're heeeeereeeeee!!

We made a stop at WL first and a part of my heart was sad because we weren’t staying there. As we stopped at the Contemporary, I wondered if we should have just stuck with WL since we knew we liked it. What if we hated the Poly? What if Mom hated it? We knew she loved WL, maybe we shouldn’t have changed it! My mind was busy with these thoughts as we made our way from the Contemp to the Poly, but as we made that right turn, pulled up to the gate and I saw the sign reading Polynesian Resort, all my worries went away. I KNEW we had made the right choice!

We got off the bus and were greeted by the amazing waterfalls and lush greenery of the Poly’s entrance. A CM put lei’s on us and said “welcome home!”. Not going to lie, I teared up just a bit! Mom and Ashley both looked at me waiting for the waterworks but thankfully I had my sunglasses on (It’s kind of a running joke with us that I cry over everything so they always look to see if I’m crying over the smallest little thing! Meanies!!! Haha)

We were led into the lobby where we checked in. The CM was looking for our Magic Bands but I told him we got them already. We had wanted to request Tahiti but it was closed as the Poly was starting to begin it’s refurb! We thought we weren’t going to be able to swim in the volcano pool, but the closure of that was a couple days after we left, so we lucked out! We request Tuvalu instead and were given our request. When we had originally booked, we wanted a standard garden view but when I called, it wasn’t showing up anymore (it was online though) the CM told us she could give us a lagoon view though for just $14 more. Well, you don’t have to twist my arm for that! SOLD! And for only $14 more than a garden view.

We took the long way to Tuvalu so we could take in the grounds of the resort. So beautiful.

We were on the ground floor in Tuvalu room 1413. Mom and Ashley let me open the door and be the first one into the room. As I pushed open the door and walked in, taking in the newly refurbished beautiful room, I could feel the tears again. This time, I didn’t care. I burst into tears and said “I can’t believe we are actually staying here!” Some of you might think I am a little weird, crying because of a resort.. Even though it was only for one night, we were staying at the Polynesian! From my first visit in 2001, when I was just 18 and we saw the luau and I first fell in love with the resort, to the many subsequent trips to Kona Café and Ohana trip after trip, I hoped every time that we would someday be able to stay there! That someday we would be able to just walk back to our room after leaving the Grand Ceremonial House instead of going back to another room at another resort. The Polynesian is more than just a resort to me. It is paradise. It was a place I had my heart set on staying for so many years. A place that I would longingly look at from the monorail as we glided past on the Express beam. I would look down at people wandering the grounds, wondering which building they were staying in and thinking how lucky they were. And now we were the lucky ones! FINALLY!

I took some pictures of the room. I LOVED the size of it!

And I loved the bathroom. The only thing I didn’t like, and I believe @fractal mentioned this in his TR too, that the hook for the towel was on the other side of the wall, next to the toilet. Made it a little hard to reach the towel! Also I wasn’t a fan of the sink IN the bathroom, probably since we’re so used to the sink being outside the bathroom but it was only for one night so it wasn’t really an issue.

The closets were cool and we loved having the couch in the room. Ashley was the tough luck loser who had the couch that night while Mom and I each had the bed. Ahhhhh, lucky us! (I wouldn’t be laughing later on in the trip when I was climbing up and down from the pull down bed on the cruise though…. Meh.)

I had yet to look out at the view, so I pulled the curtains back and actually gasped when I saw the view. Slightly to the left was the wedding pavilion and the Grand Floridian. To the right was the boat dock and the Contemporary and straight ahead was Cinderella Castle. We couldn’t see TOO much of it but had Wishes been scheduled for that night, it would have been perfect. Unfortunately, it was Night of Joy and there were no fireworks. Booooo!! We had other plans anyway but had we not, it would have been awesome to watch Wishes from our patio! (Spoiler alert, we ended up NOT having plans later that night so it was very much a bummer that Wishes wasn’t happening!)

We were starving at that point and didn’t have plans until later that afternoon, so we changed into our swimsuits and headed to the GCH. It was time to try Captain Cook’s!!

There were a couple things I wanted to try but most importantly, I wanted to try the Poly chip! Jess ( @plaz10 ) and I had been discussing these beauties for a bit before the cruise. She was staying at Bay Lake Tower with Siobhan ( @Tiggerish ) that night but we made plans to meet up a bit later. I opted for the Aloha Pork Sandwich which came with Asian slaw on top and the Poly chips!

Ashley got the chicken sandwich and fries and I can’t remember what Mom got. The pork sandwich was delish!! And the Poly chips… Oh Mylanta! Were those delicious! I’m eating some Wasabi almonds right now but boy do I wish I were eating those chips instead! The chips were the first of MANY ridiculously good foods I was going to try over the course of the trip! Ashley like her chicken sandwich and Mom liked… whatever it was that she got!! Lol

I'm loving your report, I've been meaning to check it out for awhile now. I've also never been on a cruise at all and have only recently started toying with the idea of checking out a short Disney cruise attached to a WDW trip of course. I just have to get everyone else on board....sorry for the cheeseball pun.
I can't believe you're from Maine and haven't had lobster ravioli, I get them all the time here in CT...delicious!

Thanks!! :) I think the 4 night cruise was perfect for our first cruise. That way if we absolutely hated it, it was over in 4 nights! lol I was convinced we wouldn't enjoy it as much as WDW but now we can't wait to get back on the ship! It's such a different pace than WDW. We're so used to go, go, go in the parks that it was strange to not be so rushed. It was a nice though!!

Yeah, never had lobster ravioli! haha honestly, I rarely have lobster in general! I'm not much of a seafood person. I like haddock, scallops and lobster and that's about it. My sister only likes haddock so we're at a limit as to what we can eat for seafood when we make dinner! lol

That's what everyone that I know that's cruised with Disney says! It only takes one and you're hooked. I would like to do 4 days in the parks followed by a 4 night cruise. Problem is I already have our WDW planned out for next year so I have to hold off until at least 2016. Then hopefully DL and Hawaii in 2017!!! Not that I plan in advance or anything, geez!

haha, oh don't you worry! I'm totally a "plan years in advance" person! I already have a 4 night on the Wonder booked for February, tentatively going to do the girls cruise next fall and then Disneyland right before Christmas. Ain't nuthin wrong with being a planner! ;)

Another group was chosen to go next.. After they had finished with all the groups, I was the only one left and they thought they were done. Everyone was like "no, wait! She didn't go!!" So I got to go alone :( Booooo... but I cheered up once I learned I would get BOTH dolphins for myself! :) YAY!

Dancing!!

Bringing me the fish!

Dolphin hugs!

Dolphin kiss!

You can't tell in this picture, but there is another dolphin on the other side of me kissing my other cheek. The instructor then made me go back and forth kissing both dolphins and joked one was getting jealous because I was giving more love to the other one lol

Oh and the little girl in the previous picture... We were told to stay back in a straight line when it wasn't our turn (Ashley was allowed to sneak up a little to take pics) but this girl kept drifting so far forward that the instructors had to stop several times and tell her to back up. The father just didn't even care and did nothing to keep her in the line. It was annoying.

The instructors told the dolphins to wave me goodbye, so they splashed me in the face! lol

The best part was yet to come though! We all got out of the water and sat on the dock. One at a time we were going to have the dolphins push us across the water. Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous that I wouldn't do it right! The instructors told us to float with our legs shoulder width apart and arms out to our sides like a 'T'. The 2 dolphins would then come up behind us and push our feet. When we felt that, we had to push back and keep our knees locked. If we let our knees bend, the dolphins would see that and stop automatically. Oh and ladies with bikinis (Ashley and myself) were instructed to either tie our bottoms to the life vest or hold one side because apparently moving that fast against the water, it's possible you might lose your bottoms! We wouldn't want that!!

Ashley went first from our group and not going to lie she made me laugh. She didn't have ties on her bottoms so she had to hold one side up. You can't really see it here in this picture but she has her right hand holding her bottoms up and her left hand is supposed to be straight out to the side but it was bent, looking like she was blocking someone in football.

Honestly, she looked like the Heisman trophy! A picture for those of you who are not aware of the Heisman pose:

Sorry it's so small. But this is what she looked like lol

I went next in our group. Or at least, I thought I was going next. After I swam over to the corner to wait, the dolphin came up and touched my foot. She wasn't supposed to and therefor had to go in "timeout" So I had to get out of the water and someone else went. They only got the foot push with one dolphin. Finally, the dolphin decided she could behave so she came back out. I got my turn! Let me just say it was SO AWESOME! Water was spraying everywhere, and I could not stop laughing and smiling the whole time. I also was able to keep my knees locked the whole time so I got pushed the furthest out of anyone :)

Mom took her turn last. She wasn't sure if she was going to do it because of her back (she has a bad back) and didn't want to get hurt. We convinced her to try it after we told her it didn't affect our backs at all. YAY Mom!! She didn't go quite as far as others because she said her knee bent a little at the end.

After that, our time with the dolphins was over :( Probably good timing though because it started to sprinkle as we left the dock. We returned our lifejackets and headed to get our stuff from the locker when it started to DOWNPOUR! We headed into the shop to buy our photo package. We knew before we got there we wanted to get the package that had the DVD of the experience. It also came with a 5x7 of each of us with the dolphin kissing our cheek and a 5x7 of the 3 of us with the dolphin in front of us. Mom placed the order while we shopped around. I ended up getting a long sleeve Blue Lagoon shirt and a magnet. I collect magnets and shot glasses. Ashley got a couple things too. While we were shopping, we saw this little kitty sleeping in the store! He was so cute. He was their little mascot. We pet him for a bit while we waited for the photos to be done. It continued to rain and didn’t look like it was going to let up :(

We decided since it was so yucky that we would take the 1pm boat back to the port. I was VERY bummed we would not get to lay on the beach or go swimming or even have lunch there but it was just so gross out. The rain was still coming down hard.

We got on the ferry and began our journey back to the port. Even though we didn’t get to fully utilize everything at Blue Lagoon, we had a great time! It was a little pricey ($200 a person) but in my eyes, it was fully worth it! We will definitely return as they have a beach only excursion where you can utilize just the beach and inflatable slides and then they also have a sea lion excursion which I think we will do next time. The staff there was very friendly and the ground were very well maintained. Two thumbs up for Blue Lagoon!!

The rain started to let up when we were about halfway back to the ship. Of course it did! It was still very overcast though. Definitely not the ideal backdrop for pictures of the ship I wanted to take L We were oh so fortunate however to be blessed with the presence of an extremely trashy family sitting next to us on the way back. First off, the cracked open some beers they had brought with them in their bags. I’m guessing that this was not allowed on the boat, but I couldn’t be sure. Then one of the women decided she was going to sit on the stairs and block anyone from going up and down if they needed to, right under the sign that said “keep stairs clear” Then after she sat down, she dropped an unopened beer can down the stairs….. These stairs were backless, I guess you would call it. So but the time it fell 4-5 steps, it rolled back and off the step all the way to the floor below. Instead of getting up to get the beer herself, she made A CHILD go pick it up! Whaaaaat?! I can understand in your own home if you have your kid go grab you a beer from the fridge, I used to do it for my dad. But in a public place with LOTS of other people around, I don’t think so. When the kid got back up to the top of the stairs, the woman handed her another beer, took the one that fell and told her to go give the new one to an adult sitting a few rows back (IT was a huge family that was all there together) There were about 6 adults and probably 4-5 kids. The kids were climbing all over the seats, fighting with each other, etc… The woman sitting next to us also had the screechiest voice I have ever heard. It was screechy and nasally. It made my ears hurt!! Ashley, my mom and I just kept throwing each other glances like “ is going on?” it was amusing. Unfortunately, this was not the only encounter we had with this family on this trip….

We reached the port and were dropped off on the opposite side as we were picked up on, which means we had to go through customs (we hadn’t had to on the way out) We started walking down towards Festival Place.

I was down to go get some new booty shorts but Ashley and mom didn’t want to. Rats!! Haha

We made it through customs unscathed. There she is! The Dream!!

There were still people coming and going from the ship since it was only about 2pm. I was hungry and ready for a shower, but not before the obligatory photo…. What a great first ever day in the Bahamas!!

I've bought a similar one at VS! But unfortunately, I still have to use the clear straps that came with it...hmmm I'll think of something!

I love those bathrooms too! They are so beautiful!!! And the round ones were hilarious!!! So weird looking up to see yourself sitting there lol.

Have a great trip to Cali!
Victoria's Secret has bras now that clip in the front a d the straps in the back go in such a way that you can't see them in those style shirts! I love them!

We boarded the ship and decided too stop and get some lunch. We ran into Holly, Jess P, Shannon an Courtney so we talked to them for a few minutes then found a table and sat down. I had a slice of the BBQ chicken pizza.... oh my word was it delicious!! So yummy! Definitely became my favorite quick go to snack on the ship, especially since Flo's is open all afternoon.

We headed back to the room to shower and get ready for the evenings activities. Ashley sat out on the verandah for a bit.

We headed up to Cabana's to fill our tumblers. Ashley taste tested both to make sure they tasted good!

We had some time before the show so we lined up to meet Belle.

Gorgeous chandelier...

We headed to the theater for the show and look who we spotted on the way all dapper in his tux!

Then it was Mom's turn!

The show tonight was Villains Tonight. I absolutely LOVED it! It was so funny. I didn't know how much I would like the modern day pop culture references but they fit in just fine. I think this one might have been my favorite. The man who played Hades was really good.

After the show we had some time before dinner so we headed back to the room to have a glass of champagne. We were greeted by this gorgeous sunset when we stepped out onto the verandah.

Cheers to an amazing trip so far!

It was time for dinner and tonight we were in Royal Palace. I think as far as decor, this was my least favorite of the main dining rooms but on this trip, this was my favorite meal. Since some of the ladies were dining at one of the upcharge restaurants tonight, we mixed things up a bit. Tonight Suzanne and Jenelle weren't at our table, but Missy was! YAY!!

Stacy and Liz had a couple extra drinks so they gave one to Ashley. I believe this was the Imperial Illusion? Looks like a Sunken Treasure to me!

I ordered the French Onion Soup. I'll admit I had never had french onion soup in my life. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was good, not great, but good. The crouton at the bottom wasn't my favorite.

I'm not sure what Ashley ordered but I know Mom ordered the escargot. Sorry, no pic! For my entree I had the steak, obviously! If there is steak on the menu, I will order it 9 out of 10 times. Ashley also got the steak and I believe Mom did too. It was sooooo good. Very tender and cooked perfectly.

For dessert I knew already what I wanted... the Grand Marnier Souffle!

Wow. This was the most amazing dessert I have EVER had. The souffle was hot and had an orange zest to it. It also had a little kick from the Grand Marnier. So delicious!

Mom had the dessert trio. I told her she was crazy for not ordering the souffle!

This next picture I thought it was Ashley's dessert but the more I look at it, I think it was the second dessert I ordered. Yes I ordered two. Don't judge. It was really good!

After dinner we were tired so we headed back to the room to turn in for the night. We had to be up early the next day. It was the day I was most looking forward to of the whole trip!!

I decided to take some pictures of the room...

This is one of the baths that has a toilet and sink

And here is the other bath with a shower to the right and a sink. It was awesome having 2 bathrooms. It made getting ready easier for the 3 of us.

It's funny, but this post of the stateroom is the one that most makes me want to get back on board immediately! Especially seeing out the verandah doors to that gorgeous dusk, and knowing that there's a wonderful ocean breeze and the sound of the water just on the other side of those doors. <sigh>

Love this post! The verandah was my favorite thing about the room. Not sure I could cruise without a verandah!!! lol

I see in your signature that you are going to be down in WDW in November! We are currently planning to cruise November 8-15 but plans may change if Ashley's work goes on strike and we may end up at WDW the 8-16 instead. If so, we NEED to meet up and have a drink or two or three! :D

Tuesday September 10 - Castaway Cay!!!

We woke up at 7am on Tuesday ready for our adventure on Castaway Cay!! We were going to do the Castaway Cay 5k along with some of the other ladies so we got ready and headed up to Cabanas to grab some breakfast. When we were up there, I saw it.... the island... paradise... Castaway!!

When we were outside taking pictures, Ashley's server friend Ivan was there so he came over to talk to us. He asked what we had planned for the day and we told him about the 5k and cabana. He offered to take our picture, we we let him. He then headed back to work and told us to "try and not drown too much!" hahaha....

We headed down to meet everyone else in Evolution at 8:15. It was already hot out. YIKES!!

All the gals before the race! Woooooo!! (L to R front: Me, @PartOfYourWorld, @Tiggerish and @Ariel484 : L to R back row Ashley, Mom, @LuvsTheMouse, @Tiggerfanatic, @polymissy and @Mrs.Skellington )

Ashley, Jess R and I kept pace together. We tried to run at first but man was it hot. And humid! So we slowed to a quick walk. It was fun! Heyyyyyyy!!

There we are again!

We definitely didn't set any new personal records or anything lol Here is Diane getting her medal!

Here are some of the ladies after the race with their medals. They aren't anything really cool like the medals you get for RunDisney races, but they're shaped like Mickey so that's cool enough right? Right! :)

We headed back to the ship to get our bathing suits and whatever else we needed. It was cabana time!!!!
