Two coasts: One very different world

There are TONS of things to do in California besides theme parks. There's Hollywood, Beverly Hills, the Grove, the Queen Mary, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Jose, San Francisco (one of my favorites), Sacramento... California is a huge state and it would take weeks for someone to experience the entire state, if they wanted to. California is one of the few places where you could go snowboarding/skiing, surfing, and hiking on the same day.

That sounds great!

^ djlaosc, trust me... Go to Disneyland. You can spend 2 weeks just in the resort and not see it all, from a UK first timers but used to Orlando point of view. We did in 2010, having been to Orlando umpteen times. Add Universal Hollywood, Six Flags, Knotts, sightseeing and you're already out of time with 3 weeks.

And believe me, having seen DL will mean you never think the same about WDWs MK.

From a "UK first timers but used to Orlando point of view", what would be the best time of year to go?

Christmas for the "Nightmare Before Christmas" overlay?

Oohh, okay then. If you're staying for only a week, I'd recommend five days for the Disneyland Resort and I'd leave the other two days for something else to do. You could get the five day park hopper ticket and you could stay at the Howard Johnson or another offsite hotel. I've heard the Castle Inn is nice too, along with others. As for the other two days, you could either stay in Southern CA, or go up North. Either one is fine, you could do a city tour in SoCal, visit a movie studio, go to San Diego... You could go to San Francisco and see the Bay area, which is so nice. Frisco is a lot of fun and it's a great city to visit. Hope this has helped a bit.:)

Well, I think that it is great that this thread has inspired a few people to investigate a trip to DL (and the other sights of California, it truly is a great place to visit!). But may I suggest to continue the trip planning discussions in the DL sub forum on this site? :)

For those who don't know, CMs can't use their Maingates for admission for DCA for the entire summer (June, July and August) and at DL until the final two weeks in August. When/if they will be allowed to use them for admission for themselves and family/friends in September and the rest of the fall remains to be seen.

But it does speak to TDA's feelings on how busy they expected the parks to be this summer and so far they've been right.

It might also be a smart move to actually get people to pay who otherwise would not. I wonder how many people who would either get in free because they are CM or family or friends of a CM but who don't want to wait for a few months might think getting to see Carsland would be worth a real ticket. And whether not TDA thinks that this is a welcome side effect of their crowd control measure.

Wise move-main gate abuse is rampant in FL, nice cottage industry for the CMs to make a few extra bucks

Locals would probably help more, but late September/early Otober would be not too hot and Haunted Mansion Holiday would be open. If it bothered you though you'd have to trade off Space Mountain for Ghost Galaxy. We went a month earlier and missed HMH, but I was glad to get normal SM.

I was trying to think of what the other seasonal overlay was, but I couldn't remember - for some reason I was thinking IASW!

There was a week we visited DL when both Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain were closed at the same time for the installation of their holiday overlays. It was a slight disappointment to be there when two of the big daddies were down at the same time. Of course we survived with all of the amazing offerings, but I will research the overlay schedules next time before booking, as those two are experiences I don't want to miss again. DL is a must see for any Disney fan. Have a great time!

If we eventually get there, then I'm sure we will! Thanks!

No one likes to head to those boards, though. That's the problem ... I think I saw crickets hop off my screen when I opened the Paris forum the other day!

I think it was more of crowd control ... but selling more tickets is also possible because unless someone is hording comps they likely are going to need to pay for one or more admissions.

Just one disagreement ... September and early October can be VERY hot. It is Santa Ana season and weather is unpredictable. I still recall melting on the Wharf while talking to John Lasseter after the announcement for Bug's Land. I couldn't wait to get back to the Hilton's pool!

But...doesn't Small World get a Xmas overlay? I've been at DL for the holidays once, seem to remember.

Weather was pleasant, if a bit chilly at night. Two CMs (two Valley girls or wannabees) were loudly complaining about the cold. Me being North European, I was spending the days swimming outside in the pool. Like summer to me.

Yes, it gets a beautiful overlay ... the type the MK could only dream of having. Truly wonderful.

As to the cold, as a Floridian who has also been a Californian, I'll say that CA is much worse when it comes to weather wimps. If the temp dips below 72, they need to put hoodies on out there (even styling with board shorts and sandals!) ... and if they get a slight rain shower, then my good pal Dallas Raines is on KABC-7 talking about a 'rain event' ... It is California Crazy and I love it!

The DL boards are still ok I think! But with the DLP board you are right... But there is actually a TR that was posted very recently! Which reminds me that you meant to tell us all about your adventures on your trip to DLP and never did! I would love to read what you experienced there!

It's A Small World Holiday opens at Disneyland in mid November and runs through mid January.

5220277261_6284f9bdeb_z.jpg

The general timeline of Halloween and/or Christmas attractions overlays at Disneyland USA is as follows;

Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy - Mid September until October 31st
Haunted Mansion Holiday - Mid September until Mid January
It's A Small World Holiday - Mid November until Early January

The downtime for both Small World and Haunted Mansion to get them ready for the Holiday versions is usually about 15 to 17 days prior to opening, and about 10 to 12 days after closing to turn it back into the original. The downtime for Space Mountain is much shorter, usually 2 days to turn it into Ghost Galaxy and 1 day of closure to return to the regular version (most of the Ghost Galaxy changes are digital or audio effects, rather than physical sets).

Haunted Mansion Holiday closes first in very early January, right after New Years, and Small World Holiday closes about 12 days later in Mid January on the same day Haunted Mansion reopens as its normal self.
