WOW! Thanks for explaining the whole pixie dust snorters phrase!! I've always wondered what that meant

And I was born in 1988. Barely made the cut! ;)

That's OK. I actually have a few young (obviously!) friends with B-Days around 1990-1992 ... I like them, but I am fond of telling them that I remember meals I had before they were born and what I had, what it cost and what the server's name was (really!)

Technically the first 4 years of my life were in the 70s but I don't remember much. I have a picture of myself from when I was around 2 with a bad 70s disco Afro. My parents swear it was the style. I still call it child abuse.

I didn't make it to WDW until 1985 and then several trips in the late 90s so I did miss most of what you probably consider the glory days of the place.

1985 was smack dab in the middle of the best years of WDW ... I still remember my Easter/Spring Break trip as one of my best ... and stayed at a place that now is in a scary area at what was the Howard Johnson's Fountain Park Hotel (for a while, a flagship property as it was built right after EPCOT opened) in Kissimmee. I remember the Easter Parade, my last ride on the Swan Boats and great meals at San Angel Inn, Town Square Cafe, Terrace Buffet and Top of the World from that trip.

The late 90s were certainly better than now, but WDW was already in decline ... the opening of DAK sort of overshadowed that a bit, but honestly by the time they painted that castle pink, they were in deep trouble.

WDW1974, curious to find out how you feel about the potential third gate being Marvel themed in Anaheim? Do you feel like that angle will continue to up the ante in California for Disney or is too much Marvel just overkill? Thanks in advance!

Who? Just look for any of the several that were taking scraped paint and turning it into a guest safety issue and another reason to blame TDO and trying to get the troops riled up. And someone made some goofy story about "little timmy"...

Do you even read the posts of those in your echo chamber? You really need to train them a little better. They just keep on making things harder for you. :)

I read those posts and I thought they were pretty fair ... some a bit hyperbolic, but within acceptable sane parameters.

As to my echo chamber, I'm really sorry to break it to you wannabe, but I don't have one. I just happen to make sense more than some people around here, so I tend to get respect (not necessarily from you). And if you think all the posters you quoted are simply mindless minions of mine, I'd suggest you show them all a bit more respect than that.

I don't train anyone. And no one here agrees with me on everything. And I don't agree with them, either. But I don't think the general idea of criticizing Disney for not being able to install a spinner without having serious issues (no, not in so far as killing or maiming anyone) is somehow wrong, unfair or a cheap shot either.

What's amazing is that its being reported that the Attendance surge at DCA surpassed the expectations of the Suits in Burbank.

Well, that's going to be the TDA spin. But I've heard that they pretty much expected the crowds they got ... what they seemed off-guard about was the merchandise being desired (just stupidity), the line situation for the Crazy Cones snack stands (they weren't designed well) and how well the park actually handled having so many folks in it.

FWIW, the original DCA was said to reach capacity between 32,000-35,000 people ... not that it hardly ever even approached that figure.

But it certainly is better PR to say 'we knew people would love the new addditions to Disney California Adventure Park, but we didn't expect so many of them to motor on down to Carsland.''

You should have come to the meeting.
We had cake and abused a Duffy.
;)

That isn't funny at all.

I'm glad that my Big Sugar D isn't allowed to use the computer because it would break his 'wittle heart to hear this.

This isn't something to joke about (like say Imagineers abusing fanbois!) after all.

And I told you that I don't want cake at meetings, I want gelato flown in from Italy (or anywhere in Europe).

This is such a huge point that went missed by myself and probably most of our community until it came up in this thread. Quite a bit of marketing for WDW recently is that picture of a family on Dumbo with Cinderella castle as the backdrop. We will be losing this aspect of the ride and now it will be just another spinner that is at virtually every amusement park in the world. What now seperates Dumbo from Aladdin, Triceritops spin...?

I wonder myself ... it's an iconic moment to ride the pachyderm behind a fairytale castle.

The Storybook Circus area, right now at least, just feels more like a Central Florida field.

Realize that I am ONLY talking about rumors, not projects currently underway. But we now have rumors of more DVC at DLR (well, not everyone will be happy about that, but we are as DVC members), a few new major attractions for DL over the next few years, oh and now a possible 3rd gate at DLR. And we have Avatarland at DAK?!?!?! And that is heard to be downsizing from the original plan, and moving at a snail's pace. Does that about sum it up?

Nope. That's a fairly accurate assessment of the situation.

Been busy with work much of the afternoon and night and just got to reading Al Lutz ... nothing he stated about the upcoming DLR projects were a surprise (although I think I know something he doesn't!) ... but I was surprised to see him mention the subs are on the chopping block again. After the absurd sum of $$$ it cost to bring them back, I find that shocking if true.

I don't like it. Not one bit. And I hope it doesn't happen (and it may well not as it is in blue sky and Disney is likely going to wait a good 3-4 years before committing to that kind of investment).

I think it was all timing. From DCA 2.0 opening to the incredible BO The Avengers is still pulling in (still No. 8 nationally and I saw it what feels like months ago in Germany) sort of pushed a giddiness at WDI plus a desire by people to be working on something so they remain employed. And said folks knew this would appeal to Iger/Staggs/Rasulo if only as a 'something we might do down the road after we have years of growth in Anaheim'.

Marvel just doesn't fit with Disney. It feels so much more 'right' with UNI. ... I know some fanbois say the same about Pixar, but I'd disagree. From the moment I saw Toy Story (12/23/95) the characters just always felt like they were Disney. ... Hell, even the Muppets sorta feel like Disney's more rowdy cousins. ... But Marvel characters? Um ... nah.

I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the embarassment of riches in Anaheim right now.

Cars Land and DCA 2.0 turned out even better than I had thought they would; seriously top-quality stuff there that reminds me in more than just a few places of DisneySea level work and investment.

But now to have a bunch of summer rumors popping up from some very good sources about new E Tickets and expansion coming to Disneyland Park right on the heels of Cars Land? I could understand that if the economy were booming, but SoCal is still in a serious funk economically and the storm clouds are brewing over Europe, and Disneyland is up next for major attraction expansion?!? I just think that's too good to be true. It's just.... weird.

Do NOT remind me of that as I likely won't be out until Labor Day weekend and two months seems like waaay too long. (oh wait, who started the thread?)

That's amusing because a Glendale type told me last week about CL and BVS that 'this is our best stuff ... our OLC level' ... and it sure looks like that.

People are talking about how Carsland makes them feel like they are in Radiator Springs and I've often described TDS as being in the movie where the other Disney parks make you feel like you're on a movie set.

But now to have a bunch of summer rumors popping up from some very good sources about new E Tickets and expansion coming to Disneyland Park right on the heels of Cars Land? None of that matters. What matters is that DCA is showing it can finally stand on its own (to be fair, it has been headed in that direction the last 2-3 years ... this just slam dunks the point) and you have UNI starting to act aggressively up the 101 with Transformers and soon Potter, Knott's getting its details/quality back under Matt's leadership, and even SW and Legoland adding new stuff down to the south. DL can't sit still ... I've heard there are folks in TDA worried that they're going to lose DL guests to DCA and UNI and the others, especially among the 'we've been to DL before' crowd of tourists ... the ones who spend the most. Disney can't afford to lose a day or two in Anaheim now that DCA is finally a worthy companion to Walt's park, and that's why you're going to see lots more construction walls next year across the esplanade.:)

Oh, and let me bury this here (folks often miss some of my gems) but since the Wonder experiment in LA kind of piddled out a bit ... I've heard to expect to see a bit larger Disney Cruise Line presence in 2015 in time for DL's 60th!

No one trained me, I simply went to Anaheim and it opened my eyes (and this is pre-DCA Expansion at the tail end of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.) When I returned to Orlando two years later it was a far lesser experience.

There's actually quite a big chunk of land there, north and west of ESPNZone, almost totally unused except for a big landscaping area and a two lane road they haven't used since the fall of 2001 (when that periphery road was shut down after 9/11).

The land in question would be directly at the bottom of this picture, and quite a bit of it out of the shot below the photo. Plenty of room to build a fourth tower parallel to the park directly north of the existing Adventure Tower. And you could dedicate the top floors of it to DVC and get at least another hundred new DVC units in Anaheim, bringing the total to 150 villas. Al Lutz has mentioned it would be the "Tomorrow Tower" and themed to Tomorrowland.

And then on the opposite side of the Disneyland Hotel, there's this little chunk of Disney-owned land.

That's enough land for several new hotels. I think the long term plan would be to include DVC there as well, but it would also probably see the Paradise Pier Hotel get demolished in the process. First though, they'd have to find replacements for all those thousands of parking spots in that lot! :D

DVC obviously has a future in Anaheim, from the tiny tally of 50 DVC units they have today. They dipped their toe in the water with those 50 units built at the GCH, but I think they're convinced the water is warm now.

Anaheim will never see the thousands and thousands of DVC units that WDW already has, but there's clearly an expanded role for DVC in Anaheim's future. But it is yet another example of what this thread is all about... Two coasts: One very different world.
Thanks for the pics. I was looking at a map and saw what you show here. I believe there was some speculation a while ago about the lot you show at PPH becoming a DVC resort separate from a hotel. It was so long ago I can't remember if it was something that was leaked, or if plain old armchair imagineering.
For the record, we almost bought a contract at the villas here to add to our DVC one we have at Wilderness Lodge in WDW. The economy tanked, and we didn't get points here in CA. Many believe it would have sold out very quickly if not for the economy at the time, it was a hot item at first. Now it is again with waitlists for rooms to open up, it's booked solid until New Year's. There are also long waitlists for contracts to come up in resale too. We've been using our points from Wilderness Lodge to book hotel rooms at DLR, because the villas are full.
DVC is bringing a lot of people west to see DLR for the first time, and everyone is complaining about not getting a room. So, I hope any expansion of DVC at DLR is lot more than another 100 rooms.
What you say about parking is so true, they need to find more room.
