Keeping an old Arcade building, yet apparently NOT re-theming it for TRON...irony

That we know of ... but I doubt they do as nice as it would be.

And this last part is in regards to DL vs. MK ... DL is wonderful. It's quaint and well done, but I feel like so many have blinders on regarding it. MK is probably the weakest of all the castle parks to a certain degree but it gets a bad rap. DL has it's faults. And, not that this could be helped, but they're discovering being a small park with smaller walkways and queues is not the best thing. They're being overcrowded and it's just going to get worse with SW:GE. Anyway ... I'm a day late to these discussions ....

Lol! Tbh DL is an amazing park that is a bit better than MK because of its robust attraction roster. But, I like the food and amenities at MK much better.
There's no comparison quick service wise. From the Jolly Holiday Bakery's actually satisfying sandwiches to the corn dog cart on Main Street, it's not even fair to compare the two as Disneyland hands down wins. Sit-down yes, but MK's sit down food as a whole is purely mediocre or extremely overpriced.

But the Orlando and Anaheim and how you do them are entirely different; therefore, what you are implying makes Disneyland look bad for what's only a different design. The fact that the resort has everything within walking distance means Disneyland's parks don't need as many fine dining restaurants. Disneyland could use a couple more, but it is getting at least one with Star Wars Land. MK, on the other hand, has a bigger problem as the quick service restaurants are either god awful (see Cosmic Ray's), or are still good but a shell of their former selves (see Columbia Harbor House).

Unlike at Disneyland, the Dining Plan in WDW has destroyed MK's really good food, so the quick service restaurants are all far superior (which actually makes Universal look even worse food wise).

It would be unfair to not include Downtown Disney in Anaheim as it serves a completely different function. Disney World, being so spaced out, is so isolated, requires excessive amounts of planning, and is catered to the masses of inexperienced park goers. Disneyland is a whole other beast, but because of the locals, Disneyland stays as the resort with far superior show quality, service, and food.

If you're counting outside the park, then DL cant really compete for food vs WDW.

Any idea if the name will be changed? "TRON Lightcycle Power Run" doesn't really roll off the tongue.

I agree, but neither does "Big Thunder Mountain Railroad." Many people just call it "Thunder Mountain." Similarly, I assume this will be mostly called "the Tron coaster."
so Disney is ADDING a new E-ticket quality rollercoaster at MK that fits the "tomorrowland" theme better than most things in the land now, NOT removing anything, and people have to complain, I suppose some of you would be happier if they added nothing?

I think it has some drawbacks.

First, as often mentioned, the giant unthemed showbuilding in Shanghai is extremely visible from many places both in and out of the park. A new low for Disney parks. This could most certainly ruin the aesthetics from multiple parts of the MK area as well.

Second, I'm not sure this jives well with Space Mountain. This ride is quite literally a newer version of Space Mountain. The imagineers who designed this ride in place of SM in Shanghai based it's story and flow on SM. That's why there are so many striking similarities.

Oh, and third, it's a clone. Now the ride no longer serves as a draw for Americans to visit SDL.

So while additions are generally good, I do see drawbacks. I don't think it's the best way to spend $200 million.

But then looking at some other decisions they've made, I realize it's far, far from the worst.

I feel that DL is a very dated park. The dark rides in Fantasyland (I call them the "Cardboard Classics") are so dated. They need to be retired or completely redo Mr Toad and all the others except Peter Pan (which has a much smaller Neverland scene, has a lower capacity and is a bit shorter) I understand the case of nostalgia, but they are too short and have very dated effects. Also, Matterhorn's track is so bumpy. It's way more bumpy then MK's SM I can tell you that with certainty, especially the Tomorrowland track. Our Fantasyland is lightyears ahead of there's. Even so, they need to "Shanghai ify" both parks IMO. By the way, I went to DL last week for 5 days.
What? DL's Fantasyland is way better than MK's. Much more to do and all those dark rides are still very fun. Some, like Alice, are even better than Mermaid even though Mermaid is more "high-tech." I also thought the Matterhorn was great for the grand daddy of modern roller coasters from 1959. That new Yeti also puts ours to shame because, you know, it moves. Honestly I didn't really miss SDMT either due to the options I had. They also get points for no longer having the dated tents.

You can't change that it was built in the 50's with no idea how popular it would be 62 years later.

There's a massive difference between Disney Springs and Downtown Disney at Disneyland. It's part of the park experience, unlike WDW.
Everything at Disneyland is essentially part of the parks in a way.

I know, that's why I phrased it the way that I did. They're unfortunately locked into a tough situation. I'm not trying to be critical, it's just how it is.

I think DL's Fantasyland is visually more appealing. I love Toad, Pinocchio, Alice ...

Ok, you can include everything around DL, still cant compete with WDW.

Thematically, there are also some things working in Disneyland's favor, such as the placement of Splash Mountain and Pooh in Critter Country, and the brilliant POTC ride that begins in the Louisiana Bayou.
I do think that MK has the superior Haunted Mansion and I've always enjoyed the Liberty Square area - I'd love a mini-land to extend past HM and finally give us the Sleepy Hollow ride that would augment the land brilliantly.
One can dream!

It's disappointing that Tron is not a mix of dark ride and launched roller coaster. If they just sent you on a two minute dark ride tour of the digital realm before launching you into the Grid this could be one of the most epic rides in the world. I want to see (and feel) Recognizers and light jets flying over my head and battle tanks buzzing by. I want to view the city and see programs going about their business (on the gaming Grid and otherwise) while jamming to the Tron soundtrack the whole time. And then I want to get launched and do battle with C.L.U.s baddies on the light cycles. Oh well, at least we get what we get...which is still pretty dang awesome.
I want Daft Punk to be able to show up in this ride like Johnny Depp in DLR Pirates. Just the two of them hanging out in a themed area, playing music... :geek:

I feel like it is hard to compare MK and DL. I have never been to DL. However, we are hoping to go in the near future. In my opinion, Disneyland feels like a locals park. I got this impersonation from videos we watch. I could be completely wrong.

I've only been once and that was 8 years ago LOL so I'm long overdue for another visit. It's nice to be able to walk to both parks. Disneyland is small and quaint. The dark rides are fun. Matterhorn is a classic. It's just a great little park but I personally find Disneylander's have some blinders on and have the attitude of "everything's better and wonderful here". I personally don't need to be told how great and wonderful it is (and it is ...). Personally I think PTN, tech wise, is great but a downgrade from other night parades but they eat it up, I think Soundsational, while fun, isn't on par with a lot of past parades and to me it pales compared to Festival of Fantasy ... most seem to be eating up the 'new' Fantasmic but I just shrug at it and think they did some nice upgrades but it's a bit overrated to me ... but this is all personal taste ... just go and enjoy Walt's park. It just feels ... special. It's hard to describe. If you are a WDW regular it just feels like you've stepped into a bizarre alternate reality but I've been anticipating returning since I visited. I STILL need to see the new DCA ... it's certainly run a bit better, though I see the upcharges are seeping their way in. I can't speak for Castmembers but because they only have DTD, and two parks, they aren't spread as thin and I imagine you have more locals working there who truly care. I didn't notice, bad or good, when I was there. They all were fine. Nothing stood out good or bad.

I guess we should get back to TRON ... lol

What makes you think it will take 4 years to build this? We don't know when work is going to start. The time between announcement and start of construction varies a lot. The Fantasyland Expansion started a few months after the announcement, Avatar on the other took a few years. A lot was announced at D23, and five of the projects have "started" in one form or another, so I don't expect all the other things to start immediately.

I am bummed to that this is not a fast tracked attraction. Looks like 2021 based on the disney blog. (other things on that blog open sooner)

"Tron – our highest-rated attraction at Shanghai Disneyland – is coming to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida! The attraction will be adjacent to Space Mountain in Tomorrowland and is scheduled to open for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021"

I had that opinion and a few months ago, I had my fire visit. I do not share the though that it feels smaller. With the number of attractions it has, you're still there with a ton to do. Yes there are lots of locals but it didn't feel like a local park. DCA is pretty neat and it completes the resort but of you're comparing MK to DL, its Disneyland on top, all day long.

I reiterate that it does feel like a strange alternate universe as soon as you enter, but if every strange alternate universe had Indiana Jones rides, bring it on.

Haha to keep it short and so we can get back to Tron. I completely agree. They do have blinders on. Not being disrespectful to Disneyland fans, it sometimes comes off snobby. At least with my experiences with some.

Forget the ride, I want them to follow me around all day with a mobile system!
