Time to ditch the Monorail?

Who thinks it's time to ditch the monorail system, in relation to the Magic Kingdom?

There is plenty of space to build a large parking lot to the west of the MK.

While the monorial has been a fun and exciting way to reach the park, it has become a hassle in the unloading/loading department; especially in peak seasons, and especially now that there is no 'down' time. There just seem to be too many visitors and it has led to bottlenecks and outrageously long waits. Ideally, you don't want a waiting line to be the first experience of the park, which is what the monorail gives us.

I know this idea will be sacrilegious to some, but front gate parking at the other three parks has been successful. Direct parking at the Magic Kingdom to the west, with easy tram and walking access to the gates, maintains the lagoon without the extra step of the monorail.

NEVER!!!!:fork:

Given that the last Hilton ownership of the Hilton chain was bought out last week, Paris' dad has no say.

The Hilton family haven't had a controlling say in a very long time. They just own a lot of the stock. This is at least the 3 time Hilton has changed hands.

I think getting rid of all the Disney characters and bringing in Sesame St characters sounds nice also, and then ditch the Castle for a big trashcan with Oscar bobbing up and down... NOW THAT WOULD BE SWEET!

Yea the monorail might not be the picture of efficiency but it is a symbol of WDW. So for that alone I think it needs to stay. I also agree if anything it needs to be expanded but that wont happen anytime soon. And if you take it away all the people riding it have to use the parking lot so you really dont reduce the problem.

you might be confused

Ditch the monorail?

No No No.....

Expand the monorail?

Yes Yes Yes....

I enjoy taking the Monorail into MK in the morning, sort of builds the excitement, then leaving via the launches or ferry, which is very relaxing.

Personally I would rather see them bulldoze the parking lots at the Studios, connect to the TTC with Monorail + other mass transit, then expand the Studios into where the now bulldozed parking lots were. Parking lots are a necessary evil that I would just as soon see hidden away in a single area to the extent reasonably possible.

DEFINITELY! Great Idea! If only they would expand into the parking lot there would be more than enough room for a complete park. I imagine there would be plenty of room for a Lucasfilm area with a Star wars and IJ section THAT would be awesome. They could even consider parking as Universal does it. Covered parking with connected monorail station. If only.

Why can't they just add more trains????

Because there are only a certain amount of stations. You can't have waits at every station for the trains. Its one of the reasons the monorail (or any closed loop system) is inefficient for WDW's traffic flow. You can't accommodate the large rushes at the beginning and end of the day very easily - traffic spikes. Whereas with a bus or similar system, you just send another bus. With the monorail, you just wait for the loop to run again.

The monorail is GREAT for the times of day when there aren't thousands of people trying to get on it at once. Its just completely horrible for when those thousands ARE there.

To OP: It's crowded? Welcome to WDW, son. Try riding it some time when the fireworks at MK haven't just ended or when the park just opens its gates. If you want a vacation where you can relax and be away from crowds and rabid strollers, don't come to WDW.

Sorry you can't secure a seat, it's only 4 minutes to the other side. The A/C blows extremely cold in most cars (14 A/C units per train).

Just so you know, there really is no room for any other parking lot. To the west is the landfill, and to the east is water. I'm not worried about the Monorail going anywhere anytime soon. The only reason it breaks alot more is because the fleet is getting pretty old. I think a new fleet would be great!

It would be the symbol of efficiency if it did not have its problems. The problems typically are fixed within several minutes. Otherwise, we are talking about 300 people about every 2 minutes for the express beam alone. How is that inefficient? Wait times are not that long. Recently, people have gone through the queue at a fireworks exit in about 10 minutes.

If there is any issue with the express beam, jump on the resort side and go to the second stop (from MK)

BTW the trains are cutting-edge right now. Brand new electronic systems in them all. The ride system is the old part, so yah it can be a bit bumpy compared to brand new trains

Why can't they just add more trains????

On the present beams, more than 4 per beam would just be backed up all the time. It's common for all 12 to run. If not, one is typically sacrificed from EPCOT.

Adding Attractions and capacity to the other parks is the best way to relieve the crowds at MK. I think this is why there are so many rumors about E rides at DS and Epcot. It is just a matter of creating more reasons to visit the other parks. :sohappy:

DAK has already relieved some of the crowds from MK.

BUT, that's not what Disney wants. They want the crowds to stay at MK AND go somewhere else. The 4th gate isn't to spread out attendence, it's to bring in more guests.

be careful about mentioning E-Rides at Epcot..... the EPCOT purists may get you. I think EPCOT is about to become far more thrill park in nature. I can just see a Switzerland pavilion with the Matterhorn right now.....

I'm an Epcot purist, but even I wouldn't mind that.

You are right. It is not to empty MK, just distribute crowds more evenly. The more they build the bigger the draw and hopefully that leads to even more attractions. I am convinced if there was another "Disney Decade" build out, the crowds would follow. WDW has not come close to it's potential (yet) IMO.
