Oh no, I did not mean to imply that you use illicit drugs. My point is that drug abuse is a public health problem and should be treated as such. Law enforcement action should be the last resort in dealing with this problem. Education is the key. Sorry for the confussion.

Agreed. I'm really trying to stay out of this, it's a very sensitive subject. Americans are probably the most patriotic people I know, maybe second to Japanese people. And if you guys really wanna know the truth, it's stuff like acellis coments that make people dislike the US. Have they helped out? Definately. Would I like to live there some day? Sure. But there was world before the US, and there probably will be even if they "stop helping". And the whole "drug war" down here in South America has been kinda dubious for some time...

Thanks Rodrigo, I also agree with you. :animwink:

I apologize for offending you and I'm glad to see you love your country. All I'm trying to say is that if the USA had a "no intervention" policy, alot of countries would not be around. At least not the way we know them.

I also feel it's easy to sit back and say "We are a peaceful country" when you have a world power at your front door. You, me, and the rest of the world knows that if another country attacked Canada or Mexico, we would step up and help defend you.

As far as our companies coming to your country for cheap labor, or your countrymen coming to our countryand working for cheaper wages, I agree with you.

I think your government shouldn't allow our companies to take advantage of your people.

Anyway I just wanted to say I'm Sorry for offending you.

 ACE

P.S. Go read my last post on the Tree of Life Contest. I wrote it before I wrote this.:D

Apology accepted. As for the attack to Mexico by another country, I think they would really have to have a valid reason to spend that much on attacking us... as far as I know, we don´t have the kind of problems that would require a war between my country and another one. Maybe because our "no intervention policy"? Who knows... We have other ways to solve those problems.

As for the companies coming to use the cheap labor, they provide job opportunities, and your economy and my economy benefit from it, so I don´t mind.

You're right and most of the countries in Europe are still there. Let's see, England, France, Germany, even Russia were all threatened by Hitler and the U.S. helped rid the world of that threat.

Where was Mexico? How many troops has Mexico lost defending the rest of the world all these years?

And yes there are alot of Mexicans working over here, legal and illegal, but why would they leave Mexico to work here?

Makes you wonder.

...I think this thread can easily get out of hand if we cave to a lot of patriotic chest thumping ....

...No one is more patriotic than me...but I am by no means an "America, right or wrong" type...we do a lot of stupid things around the world including backing the enemy of our enemy to achieve short term goals.

...but since you asked the question of Mexico's location during World War 2, I'm sure you know that Mexico declared war on the Axis powers a few months after Pearl Harbor when German U-boats sank two of their oil tankers...Mexico provided the US with airfields and facilities in Guadaljara which we used as Basic pilot training...
...we even trained enuf Mexicans to form 3 squadrons who subsequently served with the USA AF in the Philipines and flew those terrific P-47s against the Japanese there and over Formosa until Japan surrendered...

...the point I'm trying to make here is that WW2 was an ALLIED victory....too many Americans think World War 2 started on December 7th, 1941...remember, Europe had been under seige from Hitler for 3 years already and the Brits repelled the massive German war machine every step of the way...and the Russians made it possible for us to open a second front in the West...perhaps we could've gone it alone, but I'm not so sure the outcome would have been the same. And had the Germans built the atom bomb before us, we too would be marching with a goose step.

Viva Mexico!

Mexico has been a fairly good ally of the USA. However, South America is another situation entirely.

After World War II, many fugitive Nazis found a safe haven in South America. They encountered vast spaces, immigrant communities and often sympathetic, authoritarian leaders as well. Among the war criminals who fled to Brazil was Dr. Josef Mengele, the "angel of death" of the Auschwitz extermination camp, who died in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1979.

THREE CHEERS FOR AMERICA!!
Nothing wrong with a little red/white/blue chest thumping! After all, America is the MOST generous nation in the world! Even as we prepare to remember Sept. 11 tomorrow, we have one hand in the pocket to aid our own and the other hand in the other pocket to aid others (even enemies) around the world. What other nation has the responsibilities assumed by America? I love being an American -- even when it means being targeted by those filled only with hate. Peace to you all on 9/11 for it will be a difficult day.

Thanks for the history lesson. You're right why be proud of the greatest country in the world. And if England had won the revolutionary war, or if the south had won the civil war, or if Saddam gets a nuclear weapon. Alot of if's.

As for what I said about Mexico, maybe you should read the rest of my posts, not just the one you didn't like.

I never said we are perfect but I do believe this is the best country to live in. By the way, there's nothing wrong with some patriotic chest thumping. Especially when the liberal press tries to make it sound like we deserve what happened on 9/11.

I also respect your opinion and spent 20 yrs in the military protecting your right to speak it.

Take Care,
 ACE

...First off, thanks for serving, Ace...proud to know ya...

...I did read your other posts and didn't mean to come off as a professor...and as I re-read my post, that's exactly how I come off...

...I'm very sensitive in a forum which hosts people from across the world not to proclaim MY country as the greatest in the world...I'm sure others feel the same way about their country too... and they may not know that our chest thumping is to stick it in the eye of our stupid liberal press, it may sound more like pure 'arrogance' to them...

...the United States gets far less credit for the good it does around the world than it should...many democracies are flourishing because of the awesome ecomomic power we project throughout the world...
We have an awesome responsibility to assure that the free world stays that way.

No, I am 36! But thanks: I'll take that as a compliment! :animwink:

Anyway, no, I am just very curious, and I see this board as a unique chance to ask questions to a broad, international group that I have come to know in some respects.

I guess, in an odd sort of way, this gives us the chance to fulfill Walt's goal with the film, "Saludos Amigos," as well as extend the goal of World Showcase and 2000's "Tapestry of Dreams: A World Without Borders"... :animwink:

The bottom line for me is: Maybe I am just a kid at heart, but I still like to learn about other cultures and people; and what a wonderful format to do it!

Well, it is now 12:02, September 11, 2002, here in the USA (East Coast). Godspeed to everyone.... see you later.

Hey Tramp, don't worry about it. I truely didn't mean to insult or put down anyone else. And, to be honest, you really did enlighten me on Mexico's participation in WW2.

I just get tired of the press running down our country and other countries that won't stand with us, but want our help when they need it. So, yeah I got on my "high-horse" a little.

I saw in your profile that you also served our great country. Thank you for your service and I too am proud to call you "shipmate". I will say your job was alot harder than mine. I was a CTM in the Navy.

He has no choice. It's either he lets the UN weapon inspectors in there or We blow him up. Which option do you prefer?

Hey.. aren't we supposed to be talking about Disney rather than Saddam? Personally, he's a waste of oxygen

So... how about the mouse? ;)

No intervention on hurricanes!

We have the "no intervention" policy. We are a peaceful country. That´s the reason. The fact that we didn´t participate in any war other than the ones that we have had inside our own country, doesn´t make respect my country less or any other that didn´t participate in WW´s. I think I respect it more for not getting involved in any politic argument or war with any other country in the world.

Yes, unfortunately, there are many mexicans working there, doing the cheap labor you don´t want to do. There are also many american companies based here for that cheap labor. Have you ever wondered who made the pair of Lee/Gap/you name it clothes you are wearing? Most likely, not an US citizen. Yes, money is on your side, but that doesn´t make it all, you know? Unfortunately, the idea of the "american dream" is popular among the people who have less and they risk everything and leave their families here for a few dollars doing the jobs nobody wants to do there. What would you do without them? There are also many americans moving to Mexico, don´t forget that... they come here for the peace it provides them, the weather, or for business too, and I can assure you that many of them are ilegally staying and not living like kings.

When was the last time the Mexican Air Force flew into a hurricane to get information so as to protect the citizens in your part of the world? I won't mention all the weather satellites that Mexico has in orbit around the globe. Perhaps there is a good reason why Mexico has very cheap labor.

What is that supposed to mean? That Mexico owes the US everything?
