The Spirited Seventh Heaven ...

Well if they stop giving finisher metals to those who don't finish the race. The medals would be worth quite a bit more. Some people don't care about the medal and so they may sell them on eBay. It's Disney so naturally it'll sell. It depends on the medal evidently but they seem to start at 20 bucks. And no it does not cover the cost of entry.
No the prices would go down. Medal prices on eBay are up since all participants received. Prior, there was pilferage and some unscrupulous CMs made a ton clearing out the leftovers. That's the reason FOr the change I suspect

Time to play a Spirited guessing game: which of the following is in active development right now the mythical WDW fifth gate or the poo-pooed UNI third gate?

Think hard on this one.

Since @seascape has said Disney will have a 5th gate by 2021 and the Uni won't build a third gate because it would require them to give up the Marvel rights, I am going with WDW. He said it on a message board, it must be true. ;)

I'm not really all that familiar with this whole race Disney scene, but am I hearing this right that one of the complaints is that people who finish the race are upset that those who don't finish still get a medal? We are talking about adults here right?

That's my thought on the matter.

I'm not well-versed on the Disney racing scene either so I shouldn't say too much, but it doesn't seem like a big issue. If you're a serious runner, than isn't it your personal time that matters and not a bigger or exclusive medal? And for the people doing it for "fun," isn't the participation and the attempt at finishing enough?

Hmm...

Which of the two properties has been adding to their parks with feverish fluidity and is outpacing their competitor, which in retrospect is not that difficult when they are up against a competitor that is complacent with resting on their laurels and overspending on technology. Since the competitor in question takes 2.5 years to build a family coaster...gosh only knows how long it would take to develop/build an entire park, especially when 3 of their 4 existing parks are in desperate need of refurb, expansion, and flat out attention.

My guess: UNI third gate.

It would seem logical when taking into account all that has happened in the Orlando parks in recent years that it would be the UNI third gate, so I will guess the mythical WDW 5th gate! Why else would you bring it up as a game @WDW1974?!

I would have to bet my money on Universal's third gate. I'm guessing there's also nothing you can share at this time, right? Either way I'm excited :)

I cannot speak as a marathoner, but rather as the wife of one. My DH runs 3-4x week in training. And invests approx 5 - 10 hours per week in training. In the final weeks before running a marathon, he is typically running a "short" 5-7 miler, a "medium" 10-12 miler, and a "long" 20 miler.

For someone to not train at all, to "be creative" with their corral placement times, to impede the traffic of true runners, to not maintain the ahemmmm "required" 16 min per mile pace mandated by runDisney, to quit the race (and let's be clear, I'm not talking about quitting due to injury), and to receive the same "reward" of a medal - well that's kind of slap in the face to those who do put in the work.

If someone wants a freaking Disney marathon medal without busting their a$$ to train, then buy one off of eBay.

Check OCD Andy's GREAT reports on Calico and the Camp Snoopy (I got a tour of that as well about three weeks ago) update on Micechat.

Thanks, I'll check them out tomorrow (it's currently 1:07am as I type this). I remember briefly looking into it when Cars Land was completed to see what else we could do while we were at Disneyland and started to have another look over the weekend.

We don't know what else we will be doing on the trip - the only thing that we are sure of is Anaheim for Disneyland, and with Knotts only being 10-15mins away, it would make sense to visit it while we are there.

Just playing devils advocate here. Are the serious runners actually competing for a medal that they can find on eBay and one that is given out to anyone who participates? Or are they running for other reasons like personal best times, health and fitness, etc?

I can sympathize a little to the thoughts and feelings of serious runners because I can compare it to the alleged UNC academic scandal. A basketball player Rashand McCants claimed that he took fake classes and got As in those fake classes (even making the Deans List) just so he could stay on the basketball team.

If I was a student at UNC and I worked my butt off to get As and make Deans List, I would be pretty ticked that another guy made it too by basically doing nothing. It diminishes my achievement.

That being said, in the end this marathon is supposed to be for fun right? Again, coming from an outsiders perspective, but I wouldn't put these marathons at the level of intensity as Boston or New York Marathons? Perhaps I'm mistaken and perhaps for some they treat the Disney Marathons as their own Boston and New York marathons. To those people I sympathize. But I also think if there are enough people who feel this way, Disney should have a trained runner marathon race instead of the all-inclusive ones. That might alleviate some of this trouble.

You might want to read some of the posts on the running threads here. The medal is certainly not the only reason to race, but it's certainly part of it - a concrete proof to oneself that they did indeed do it. As far as intensity goes, it seems to me that 26.2 miles is 26.2 miles no matter where it is run, and completing that is worthy of reward. Frankly I was annoyed that my son back in his little league days got a trophy every year when I can count on one hand the number of times he even hit the ball or made a sincere effort to catch one, where others on the team worked hard to improve their skills.

Trophy and ribbon companies love the fallacy of participation awards.
