So we have another confirmation of Frozen in Norway. (sigh).
I suppose that it's only a matter of time before speculation runs wild on whether the oil rig is transformed into Elsa's Ice Castle or a recreation of the film's finale of Arendale Castle with the characters ice skating around it.
Oh, the anticipation....

I have spent many nights there in the past, but this was my first stay in a villa. They did an excellent job incorporating the 'new' wing into the original structure. And you gotta love having a jacuzzi that fits 35 people. All in all, I am happy with the way they are maintaining the resort. (Yes, I noticed the new carpeting in the convention center)

I didn't visit the spa, but I did dine at Napa Rose and it was as wonderful as ever. I did notice that 'cheaper' entrees had been brought up close to the price points of the more pricey items. In other words, the days of getting $25 chicken to avoid $40 beef are long gone.

But the food was lick your plate good. The service was terrific. And the view was nice too.
I can no longer get a villa at my 7 months out. I am wait listed for next month but doubt it will come through. As such, I overpay in points to stay DLH, PP, or GC. I'm assuming you've heard nothing about expanding DVC at DLR, as you haven't mentioned it.

You don't care?!?! Why do I bother? Why? WHY?!?!!

Well, the late 2015 sailings were announced and all I will say is that Disney didn't originally plan on going back to Galveston or doing a month of sailings from San Diego (the worst, most unorganized place I have ever gotten off a ship, btw) ... so read into that what you will.

I know I keep saying this, but DCL is adding ships (plural). It's just a question of when and I think it is going to be much sooner than Disney is publicly saying.

I recall you were going to do our cruise and then decided on DLR instead. You should have done like the Faux Top One Percent and done BOTH! ...It is a lot of fun to cross the Canal and I loved getting 25 hour days versus the 23 hour days on all my transatlantics.

Yes, I saw you had the very hot weird weather versus the California perfect weather we had (like I keep saying, climate change is an evil liberal media creation designed to harm business!) The Grand is a wonderful hotel, but we booked it using DVC points for a villa. I wouldn't pay anywhere close to what they charge otherwise when I can PL a Marriott for $50-60 a night nearby. But be warned that September typically gets the weird weather you had a month ago.

As to DLR and capacity issues ... that discussion will also be coming. (Loved walking by the ticket booths late one night and talking about how ridiculous the prices have gotten only to wake up to the prices having MAGICally been raised over night).

I suppose they already all the plans ready about the DCL ships?
like size? names? design?

Will the new DCL ships will be featured in ASIA or Australia? or just increasing the available routes in the caribbean, europe and alaska?

Iger states he doesn't wanna rush the Broadway play because they want quality, yet they can't give the same respect for the ride.
maybe because a broadway show NEEDS ACTUAL QUALITY to succeed.
while lifestylers will still drive Disney parks even with very low quality attractions?..

That's me.
Maelstrom is...ok. It's a cute little ride, which suits it's location.

Frozen...ugh...no thanks. No interest in the film or a cheap overlay based on it. Especially not in a park where it has no business being.

I wonder...what if Maelstrom wasn't available for the overlay? Where would they shoehorn Frozen in then?
Carousel of Elsa?
(Makes as much sense in Tomorrowland as Norway)

Apparently, to no one's surprise, Maleficent is bad movie.

I'm too tired to finish the review, but MALEFICENT sucks and it's a weird rape/revenge movie.
https://twitter.com/devincf/status/471549628983173120
MALEFICENT touches on themes of rape, female genital mutilation and the end of filmmaking with personality.

Between MALEFICENT and A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST this is a bad weekend at the movies.

All they have to do is overlay the oil platform with ice monster costume and viola

Frozen at EPCOT. That is what has you all hot and bothered right? Well, it is coming to the ride formally known as the Maelstrom. It will be a rush job. I don't normally name sources but here I flat out will since my second source confirmed it to an audience of maybe 150 people during an onboard presentation on the Disney Wonder.

Fitzgerald is too good to us

Rotten tomatoes is stating other wise, the first three reviews were positive Granted it's only the first three, I'll wait and see how the film pans out with the rest of the critical universe before dubbing it bad. I have a feeling anyone who hates the thought of Maleficent being a good is not going to like this film. It touches on a lot of that according to the reviews, and apparently comes close to touching themes about rape, oh my.

I personally lost interest when Paul Dini was taken off screenplay duties and a first time director, whose background is solely production design/FX, was put in charge.

Those reviews don't say she is 'good' they say she is complicated and conflicted. I'm surprised the early reviews are actually positive. I expected a Wonderland levels of complaints.

How does one return from a truly WONDERful and MAGICal vacation? How does one get back in that 'real world' swing?

By starting a thread here and watching all the fun follow, of course.

Now, I was going to wait until this weekend when I'll have more time to start this, but buoyed by the successful and cliche filled return of Jack Bauer (24 is still the same fun pro-torture government PR it always has been) and the Miami Heat's march to a pretty inevitable third straight NBA title, I figured why put off a good thing, right?

Now, I could tell you all about my amazing travels (or at least the Disney portion that included everything from a 15-night DCL voyage thru the Panama Canal to a week at DLR's Grand Californian Resort and Spa to a day in Glendale and Burbank but .... well, I know that might start the about burying news or there not being news or folks whining about WDW, so I am going to tell this tale out of order and drop the WDW news quickly and then discuss the other things that, frankly, interest me more), but let's start with hot WDW News and Rumours, shall we?

Frozen at EPCOT. That is what has you all hot and bothered right? Well, it is coming to the ride formally known as the Maelstrom. It will be a rush job. I don't normally name sources but here I flat out will since my second source confirmed it to an audience of maybe 150 people during an onboard presentation on the Disney Wonder.

George Scribner, animator and Imagineer (for those who don't know his pedigree he directed 1988's Disney animated feature Oliver and Company, did background work on films including the Lion Ling, Dinosaur and Fantasia 2000 and was the director of Mickey's PhilharMagic and The Gran Fiesta Tour at WDW and also was responsible for TDS's Magic Lamp Theater film) confirmed that WDI is working on a redo of the ride with a Frozen overlay. BTW, his sister in law, Amy, was one of Frozen's producers.

Now, I don't think WDI wanted him leaking this to an audience of largely Disney geeks in the middle of the Pacific. But someone asked him about criticism over changing a classic EPCOT attraction by adding toons and he got a bit of that famous WDI 'we are smarter and better than our audience' 'tude and it sorta slipped out. I am not sure he had any intention of saying what he did, but he did.

Specifics? This is a Maelstrom redo, not a new Norway pavilion. I expect it to be cheaply executed. The biggest cost will be in redoing the finale scene as every other current scene can be (and looks like it will be) worked into a new attraction. The question is how far Disney will go in the queue and unload and whether the rumoured Olaf narrates a tour of today's Norway film will actually happen or not.

But this isn't an Imagination back and forth or even a Star Wars Land deal. It will happen. They want to strike now, before the Broadway play and the sequel, while everyone is Frozen over because at some point some of the glow over this nice but overrated film will melt.

A direct quote from a kind Glendale based creative is ''Disney doesn't want a repeat of Little Mermaid where it takes them decades to get product into the parks.''

More news?

How about leadership? How about Nick Franklin? How about corporate spin?

The man is leaving because Disney no longer desires his services. Realize that barring a financial misdeed or being caught with an underage playmate, Disney NEVER, EVER, EVER fires anyone. They just do the business equivalent and don't renew contracts. That is what happened here. NGE is an overbudgeted, out of control, hated by most CMs project. Someone had to pay for that behind the scenes and this was the brainchild of Nick and Jay Rasulo. JR isn't going anywhere. Nick used this project to save his job when none of his regional entertainment ventures ever got close to happening. It worked for the last six years.

But now reality has hit and not only is NGE not a huge financial windfall for WDW, it is a drag on the resort's financials and is preventing Disney from doing much in the parks to actually attract guests. Something had to give and it did.

Speaking of giving ... giving Tom Fitzgerald creative control over EPCOT likely means he will be looking for work sooner than Eric Jacobson or Joe Rohde or Kim Irvine. Giving up the DLR portfolio for a park with (Frozen aside) little on the horizon was his first push out the door according to respected voices at 1401.

Now ... how about some WDW rumour based heavily in reality?

Georgie K actually is delusional enough to think if he makes a success of NGE that he stands a chance of being Tom Staggs' replacement running P&R. The reality is George has no personality and charisma and stands no chance of ever moving to that level. ... BUT ... he could wind up with one last three-year deal, one that would take him to the ancient (by Diisney standards) age of 65. That deal wouldn't see him running WDW, per se, but move him into Meg's job overseeing WDW, DLR and DLP.

The problem there is that Meg, who has battled some serious health issues, is doing better and likes her job. She may well stay with the company for another contract and that will leave George unemployed (I can already see him and Andy chowing down at the Sizzler buffet on I-Drive).

The wild card in all of this remains Danny 'Sure, Lee is my daddy, but nepotism had nothing to do with my meteoric rise up the Disney exec ladder' Cockerell. He has been placed in a position to be groomed to be a longterm WDW Prez, yet he has struggled with running WDW's weakest park (sure, it may be happening on weekends for a month, but we all know that park will be hurting bigtime as soon as the SWWs end). And Phil Holmes has refused to move aside to give him the MK ops experience that seems to be needed for him to be top dog. This will be an interesting succession battle to watch.
Thanks for another outstanding update!

@WDW1974

So, does the Frozen overlay of Norway mean that the other EC rumored projects won't happen - such as Rat in France. Also, any idea when the Soaring updates will become official news?

EDIT - N/m about Rat in France... Saw your update on it after posting...

So, no Monorail expansion then?
After seeing the EC loop in such poor shape this past week, I'd say expansion can't possibly (and shouldn't) be on the agenda until they fix up, refresh, and modernize the current system already in place. It's a shame it's gotten so bad!

The MK loop, although much older, runs smoothly and I didn't see any noticeable structural deterioration. The EC loop, on the other hand, is literally falling apart and aging fast. When I rode it (the EC loop) a couple of weeks ago, the train did not ride at full speed and the trip was quite bumpy. So, the whole thing, in my opinion, needs a rethink and a new strategic plan that keeps maintenance issues and expansion in mind.

Let's not pretend that the reason people dislike the idea of Frozen in Norway is because Maelstrom is a great ride. It isn't. Maelstrom is a C ticket boat ride that hasn't been updated in 25 years. The objection is that there are at least two better parks for a Frozen attraction.
I respectfully disagree. My objection is based on the fact that Maelstrom already has the longest lines of any WS attraction. Instead of "plussing" attractions that are already popular (TT, Soarin') I really wish they'd direct funds to fix what's broken/missing (Imagination, WoL, additional WS pavilions).
