Not sure where you are coming down on this issue, Peter.
Should Darth Vader be made to dance, or not?
Only with an equally sinister partner. Like...

One of the things in life that I am least interested in is the number of guests per day at MK. So, with that said, is 30K good or bad? What is normal?
TEA's numbers are the most cited but, after some concerns were pointed out to me, I did some double-checking and now have a lot less confidence with their numbers than I once did. (Ignorance is bliss.)

Up till 1984, Disney published attendance. (Eisner stopped the practice in 1985 because he couldn't control the spin.)

WDW's official numbers from the 1970's and 1980's (fiscal years runs from October to September so, for example, the 1972 number represents October 1, 1971 to September 30, 1972):

- 1972: 10,713,000
- 1973: 11,593,000
- 1974: 10,834,000
- 1975: 12,515,000
- 1976: 13,100,000
- 1977: 13,100,000
- 1978: 14,100,000
- 1979: 13,792,000
- 1980: 13,783,000
- 1981: 13,221,000
- 1982: 12,560,000
- 1983: 22,712,000
- 1984: 21,120,000

Although not officially published, WDW attendance was reportedly 21,750,000 in 1985 and 23,900,000 in 1986.

Epcot (opened October 1, 1982 and fully reflected in the 1983 number) is a good example of how a major addition can impact a theme park's attendance both before and after opening.

Excellent post but I think it was smart to not post the numbers from Eisner's perspective because the company had takeover sharks circling. Confidence was everything back then from the Sid Bass's of the investor world so he needed to stabilize and control things (though I'm sure Sid could ask for the numbers).

I would love to know how the opening if Disney-MGM and Splash Mountain in the late 80's/early 90's reflected on the numbers, as well as the later expansion of Disney-MGM in the mid-90's when TZTOT and RRRC and Fantasmic opened, and later, during the late 90's when AK opened.

A lot of tourists probably went home because they need to get back to work tomorrow.

It was certainly PACKED on Christmas Day! I thought two women were going to come to blows and wanted to walk away, but couldn't, really. It was as crowded as when you walk out after fireworks shown at closing. They even had staff out yelling at us - "Stay to the right!" in Adventureland.

It was crazy busy.

Bad. Especially for this time of year.

That's well below average daily attendance. For this time of year? Magic Kingdom should be pulling somewhere between 60 to 75,000 people per day. (That would put it in the phased close range)

What Universal did was different. Abbot & Costello were the comic relief not the monster. It was a "horror" movie with the comic relief of Abbot & Costello not the Mummy or Invisible Man.

I guess I should have referenced 'Young Frankenstein'.......

"Come back, I was going to make espresso !"

It was crazy there Christmas Day. I have a friend who has worked there for years and she has never seen it this busy. However, besides MK the crowds have been not too crazy at the WDW.

This is my 6th Christmas season since 2004. This falls below average in my book, even at mk.

Just checking the phased close history documented by Steve over the years suggests that while it was busy here, it did not approach historic levels.

Keep in mind, TDO touted last years crowds as "historic"...

Must be all that added capacity with FLE;). The 2nd Dumbo eats crowds.

I'd imagine they had a big impact since Michael started the Disney Decade idea. The only thing that got in the way of the many 'Phase 2s' was DLP flopping financially for a while. The same thing is now happening with MyMagic+.

You can start to see a pattern, too. Everyone went to MK on Christmas Day or the day after. 12/26, parking lot closed for an hour, but MK itself did not--implies ops had more off-site guests than anticipated. Rest of the week, traffic bad everywhere, but parks less than "holiday crowded"--again, implies a lot of off-site people not necessarily going to WDW parks.

If this was a case of vacations shifting due to the Wednesday holiday--my initial thought--where were the phased closings Monday/Tuesday? Or is the crowd split between last week and this week? Monday's attendance will be interesting...
