I have a question for y'all, the wife and I were looking at Aulani. In April it would cost 4,777 for a week. Outrigger Reef, where we have stayed before would cost less than $1,400.00. What would be the benefit of 3K to staying at Aulani?

I've never stayed at Aulani but IMHO it can't be worth over 3X the price. Aulani is a lot newer but the price seems pretty outrageous. Are you looking at the weeks around Easter? DVC at WDW usually has the 2 weeks around Easter and the 2 weeks around Christmas as the highest price season so maybe that carries over to cash rates too. I can't see Hawaii as being as popular a spring break destination as WDW, but maybe they still jack up the prices.

Part of the equation is being on Oahu. For $4800, you could do a suite at the best ranked hotels on Maui whose service and amenities far outstrip Aulani. And it's not like Ko Olina will save you travel time to just about anywhere except the beach. But I'm prejudiced against the rat race of Oahu too. Saving my spare change for when the Cocoa Palms opens back up.

Finally had to jump into this discussion. First, while some parts of the Caribbean are great, Hawaii is just, well, better.

I haven't stayed at the Outrigger Reef, but have spent a lot of time there. That is our beach of choice when we stay in Waikiki, and love the Shore Bird restaurant. It has a great location nestled between the Halekulani and Fort Derussy, and the Beach Walk is right there.

But in comparison to Aulani, similar to comparing the Caribbean to Hawaii, Aulani is just, well, better. It is by far the most Hawaian resort on Oahu, maybe in all the islands. The Hawaian character doesn't feel like theming, more like part of the resort's DNA. Many of the unique activities there don't cost extra, so that has to be factored in. I could go on and on about how fantastic it is, and it is significantly better (except for dining options) than the similarly priced Marriott next door. And the location, while seemingly somewhat remote (at least from Waikiki), is actually pretty good for getting to Pearl Harbor or the North Shore. I think you can get to Pearl Harbor from Aulani in less time than it takes just to get out of Waikiki at some times of the day.

But $4777 for a week? Wow, as much as I love the place, I could never justify spending that much; even $400 a night would be pushing the limits of what I would call "reasonable ". Only owning DVC points has made staying at Aulani possible, at least for us.

Universal. There was backups on eastbound I-4 to exit. Long backups at their auto plazas.

At least Thursday the Outlet mall seemed to be getting a chunk of the crowd, as well.

Not sure what effect the Wednesday holiday has. News said OIA was slammed on Thursday with people flying out.

ETA: KingBob reports Atlantic Dance Hall was pretty dead last night, which is very unusual Christmas week. Another sign WDW hotels might not be at capacity (they are the main "feeder" for the club).

I may be a Star Wars geek, but actually I liked it. Hijacking Santa's sleigh may be going too far though;).

Every time I see something Star Wars related at WDW I just shake my head and think what are they waiting for because it would work so well. Vader and the storm troopers could headline their own parade or even better be the finale of a Disney villains parade at DHS.

Nothing shows TWDC's ossified culture better than the inability to use the Star Wars IP, We usually take summer vacation in May and so are there for the Star Wars Weekends, This year there were hardly any Star Wars stars or Creative types to greet the fans.

Imagine a stormtrooper parade with Darth and the Emperor at the head, Perhaps even a functioning AT-AT and I'm not really a fan of Star Wars. Star Trek much more to my liking.

@WDW1974 - what do you know about a land transfer from WDPR to RCID over at DTD?

Im wondering if they are creating an Enron situation....

Oh please do tell us more, But I think this is likely to be something that facilitates construction at DTD, But if we start seeing a bunch of these something interesting is going on.

Interesting - WDW I think found the upper bound of pricing and exceeded it a while ago

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.

Oh my gosh, I would pee my pants. That guy terrifies me.

When my niece was performing in the Jedi Training Academy, he absolutely scared me witless. I felt, for sure, that his menacing glare was aimed straight at me. The more I tried to hide behind people, the more he seemed to stare my way.

As Lord of the Sith he's doing his job VERY well, He's supposed to be beyond scary

I was 10 when the first movie came out (to me - THE MOVIE) and his raspy breathing terrified me.

I had a good friend whose father was encased in an iron lung machine in their dining room. The frosted glass pocket doors to the hallway were always closed, so I only ever had a vague glimpse of the shape of the contraption which lay beyond. But oh that sound ....

In retrospect, I'm not sure if the iron lung even sounded like Darth's breathing, but the two are inextricably linked in my memory. And they terrify me. Which is funny, because not much does.

Darth Vader is one of the scariest movie characters ever created, Disney using him for comic relief is beyond lame.
