The character designs look great imo. Super real to life and not cartoony at all. Every animal could very easily be live footage (barring Rafiki who I’ll admit isn’t great)
Personally, that's my problem with them. They look too real and because of that they don't look expressive and distinct. I thought the Jungle Book found a good balance, but based on trailers these designs just feel too much like real animal footage. Of course, that's just based on trailers. So, they could seem more distinct and expressive in the actual movie.

While I'm not necessarily a fan of the visuals so far, I love the voice cast and I've never disliked a movie by Jon Favreau. Plus, worst case scenario, even if the movie does suck I can enjoy this as a nature documentary mixed with a Lion King sing along. So, I'm not super worried about it.

I'm coming into this film with about 0 intention of even seeing it. The Lion King is the worst Renaissance film and only has it's reputation because it opens with one of the best openings in cinematic history and the rest of the film is a miserable slog with the most unlikable protagonist among the likes of Roseanne Barr Cow and Chicken Little.

Bottom line, I hate The Lion King.

Have you been watching Confused Matthew's videos lately?

Lindsay Ellis has been nominated for a Hugo Award, and Mr. Walker is still relying on a video routine that just doesn't work anymore.
It certainly doesn't help matters that Walker fails to do his research on the movies he reviews; and has such a big ego that he cannot comprehend the fact that people like something he doesn't. Seriously, there's been a lot of fan-bashing in the post-revival Nostalgia Critic videos.

Who dat?
That is literally what I was gonna say!

But then again, a certain disgraced reviewer whose name we shall not speak didn't like it, either...

I remember enjoying Doug Walker's videos in my early teens and then the revival happened and I didn't care anymore. Lindsay Ellis was always the better reviewer to me.

The charisma of The Lion King for me comes from the animation expressions and warmth that the film provides combined with the score and soundtrack.

The live action from the trailer looks too hyper-realistic to capture the emotion and distinct character designs of the animals. Lion King was my favorite movie growing up but I felt nothing from the trailer.

It's also why I feel if you're just going to tell the exact same story in CGI form I can just go watch the original at home :p

With films like Aladdin though I can see them attempting different twists on the classic story. Same if they ever did a Hunchback live-action or Hercules etc
