Well, I'm not going to waste my time seeing the Dumbo remake. It is obviously a cheap, dull, lifeless, soulless cash grab, wasting Tim Burton's talents, hired kids who can't act, and stretched out the story's motions to make it hollow, as interesting as elephant dung, and pushing an "no circus animals" agenda upon a film SET IN THE 1910s!
You waste Danny DeVito with this?

If we're hating on Burton's Dumbo, I'm gonna chime in here. The anti-captivity message is some serious BS, like seriously, Disney, you own elephants, don't play all high and mighty with us here.

Now, I'd be lying if I said I liked circuses, and I totally don't think exotic animals should be kept captive for the sole purpose of entertainment (it's all about conservation and education) but say that, don't say "we don't support captivity" because 1. You're spreading a false message, and 2. You're being a hypocrite because you literally own a zoo!

(Also, Animal Kingdom is a zoo. It's a zoo/theme park hybrid, but still a zoo, so anyone that says its "natazu" is just lying to themselves and continuing to perpetuate the myth that zoos are bad but AK is okay because its different)

You didn't see The Greatest Showman, as historial inaccurate as it is, shying away from the presence of animals in the circus.

Yeah a historical movie about animals in the circus makes sense. I think the best way to send a message that animals don't belong in circuses is to just not make circus movies. Otherwise, just make your movie and leave out the preachy message and don't support real circuses with real animals (barring horses, dogs, other domestics, etc.)

Yeah, why not do like an original Homeward Bound kinda thing where a bunch of circus animals escape their abusers to find their promised land?

Can someone explain the hate for Maleficent! I really like it and don't understand the hate!

Maleficent takes a character who sentenced a new born baby to death because she didn’t get invited to a birthday party and makes her a sympathetic character. Makes me afraid for Cruella. Can’t make a lady who wants to murder puppies a good guy
i mean like it makes sense in terms of Medieval politics where not inviting someone to a christening is a massive snub

I didn’t necessarily enjoy Maleficent, but I liked it more than any of these other recent live action remakes. Maleficent actually has something to add. It changes the way we look at the classic well known story.

I am becoming increasingly concerned with these “faithful” adaptions that are just re-making a great story... with higher quality images and a new cast. I would much rather then creatively adapt a well-known story or... what if... make an original story?

Few will remember Beauty and the Beast (2016) in 10 years.

I'll agree. I actually am not against Maleficent. Its not a great film, but its not as bad as some make it out to be (in my mind at least).

Most of the big faults with maleficent are due to its connections to the original.

Why is she the only human looking fairy? And where are her parents and what makes her special? Those questions aren't important to the movie. But looking at the movie as an origin for Maleficent having a clear origin makes sense.

Framing the greatest Disney villain as a woman scorned (coupled with a rape metaphor) is an odd choice. But if you look at the movie on its own disconnected to who we know maleficent as its not a problem.

Maleficent never turns into dragon, her crow does. King Stefan is too crazy and evil. The story doesn't work as another side to sleeping beauty, it just changes who the hero and villains were. etc. All these problems are problems because of the original.

Taken on its own, Maleficent is alright. Kind of an unoriginal art direction, though its pretty well executed. Bland color pallete. Middle of the road, cliched writing but not bad. Diaval is super fun. Angelina Jolie kills it. A solid, middle of the road live action disney film in my book. On about the same level as Prince of Persia or John Carter.
