. As of my last visit (last October), the tradition was alive!
Walmart's a business, too. Disneyland isn't Walmart, and the reason it's become so beloved and famous is because it hasn't been run like Walmart. All the little non-money-making details are part of what Disneyland is. The people in charge who don't grasp that concept (and don't care) are killing the golden goose. It's not that this change is a huge disaster; it's just another support stone being pulled out of the structure. Some changes at DL are good, while some changes harm the overall product in the name of sheer short-term greed.
