Do straight people still exist to Disney? No offense to some of our Gay friends here but it seems like every single one of the pictures they post on social media depict Gay couples and not just during Pride Month… all year. For example Disney Photo Pass account will usually include 4 pics per post. It’s almost always two pics of Gay couples, one interracial family or Black family (maybe Hispanic one in a while) and then a miscellaneous family or couple. Just seems really over top.

How is it over the top?

It’s Too much in proportion to their actual fan base or just people in general and comes off too calculated and like pandering. It’s like they re trying to make up for the last 100 years with every single post on social media. I wish they could do it in a way that just came off for more natural and didn’t remind me of political correctness every.single.post. But this is the era we’re in. I think that things will one day balance out when enough time has passed and more people and corporations feel that representation is more balanced.

To play devils advocate you could say this is really just a business move by Disney. They already have certain demographics locked up. Now they re going after the people that have felt alienated for years. My one question is in doing so do they lose a lot of the bread and butter customers from Middle America? Like when they get too political with what happened in Florida recently.

Anyway, I remember talking to one of my Black friends at the company I worked for a a few years ago and by that time she was well aware of my fascination with Disneyland. I remember asking her if she ever goes or is into it and she said something along the lines of “Black people don’t do Disney, it’s not for us.”

Are you suggesting that gay people, for the most part, don’t go to Disneyland? And it sounds like you’re not too keen on Disney having black people in their ads either, or that it comes off as fake and disingenuous. I’d say that enough black people visit the parks for there to be black people in the ads, not that that matters. I don’t see how the ads are being politically correct.

If Disney is alienating people who can’t stand the sight of gay people and people of color in their ads, then they need to keep doing what they’re doing, as that’s great to hear, in my opinion.

Obviously Gay and Black people visit Disneyland. The social media posts would have you believe however that 80% of their customers are from these demos when it’s obviously not the case.

Forgot to respond to your last paragraph. I don’t think it’s a smart move for Disney to get political. Also just because people don’t want schools talking to their kids about sexuality before 3rd grade doesn’t mean they don’t like the sight of Gay or Black people. That’s quite a leap.

I guess I just don’t understand what the big deal is. I’d also say that Disneyland actually has a ton of gay fans.

White straight people will be okay.

???

You asked could Disney be alienating people. I assumed it was in context to the topic of gay and people of color in their ads, since that’s what we’ve been discussing. Not sure why you’re mentioning the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. I’m a bit confused.

Now imagine what it’d feel like to go an entire lifetime never seeing anyone like you in advertising.

Was the ever really the case though? I feel Iike people of all races have been depicted in Disney advertisements since at least the 90s. Gay people not so much. To make up for it now every single post has at least one to two Gay couples. I think it should be at least 3-4 per post personally.

Also I’m not sure I’m represented all that much anywhere. I’m half Italian half Jordanian. People in Disney ads are usually Black, Latino, and maybe Asian sometimes. If you think that I felt that the corn fed White American from Middle America represented me when I was growing up you’d be mistaken. But it wasn’t something I ever thought of or cared about.

And yet those others do, maybe think on that.

I get it. It means more to certain people. I was fortunate enough to have strong family unit. Huge family with a lot of culture on both sides. I guess what happened on TV or in the outside world really didn’t matter all that much to me. It was just entertainment and background noise. My sense of who I was or my value came from within the home.

If it actually didn’t matter to you then you would not be complaining about it.
