Yea I read that story yesterday. Terrible. It’s time that every school has multiple armed guards. If we have 40 billion to send Ukraine we have the money for this.
Didn’t the school have armed guards? Or am I thinking of another school? Either way, I don’t believe this is the solution. Neither is training and arming staff and faculty (I know you’re not suggesting this, but I had a debate about this with my friend and that’s what she suggests, which I think is insane).

It’s an absolute horror show. But the “debate” over preventing mass shootings is beyond parody at this point.

This simply doesn’t happen in other industrialized countries. What are the differences between those countries and ours? It’s not complicated.
Thank you. This is what I was trying to get my friend to understand. We are literally the only “developed” country with this problem. Clearly, they’re doing something right.

we need to take mental health more seriously, stricter gun laws, and demand better police officers.

I think we need all of this stuff too but as a last line of defense their should be well qualified and well paid security guards with rifles. Not one lame-o with a pistol. Don’t want to wait 1000 years for the mental health in this country to improve or for gun laws to actually do anything. Bad guys will still find a way to get guns, no matter what the laws are. We need to do something with immediate results in addition to stricter gun laws etc.

Can you guys suggest anything that would have better short term results ?

There is no other country that is our size with as many people that is such a melting pot of different cultures, races, ideologies etc

What works in other countries would either not work here or take a very long time

I think the reports keep changing. At first he apparently was immediately taken out by the piece of garbage/shooter but apparently now there wasn’t one. Unless you re saying there was one on the other side of campus that just did nothing.

I don't believe this, all it takes is the will of the people and politicians not giving into the gun lobby. We've gotten gun control laws passed in the country before, like the '93 Brady Bill, so it is possible.

As sad as it is, I'm hoping this is another watershed moment like Parkland that gets people motivated for major gun law change.

Gun control works. It works in Europe and it works in states like CA and NY. But it needs to be adopted at the federal level. There are countless options, among them:
  • Universal background checks
  • Extensive licensing process (like with driving)
  • Mandatory mental health evaluations
  • Mandatory waiting periods
  • Mandatory insurance
  • Age restrictions
  • Gun buyback programs
  • Close the gun show loophole
  • Ban weapons with no merit other than being killing machines

So you pass some laws and everything gets better overnight? All the guns disappear?

This is a tough one , some practical ideas that shouldn’t be too controversial outside of the most extreme ideologies
- must be 21 to purchase any kind of firearm
- limit the magazine size to x bullets
- must pass written and applied tests (mental and firearm knowledge including safety)
- background search before purchase , warrants to confiscate guns for those that commit certain crimes
- hefty penalties for offenders of the above

I believe in the right to own a gun , but would have no problem with any of the above which IMO would lower the risk of these masa shootings considerably , anyone else have any thoughts?

Yeah this is all great but won’t do much to ease the suffering of a parent who’s kid gets shot at a school shooting in the next 10 years +

Maybe I don't have the right to ask this, but....

Can we please get back to Disney topics? Or, at least, would you please move this conversation to its own thread that I can more easily avoid?
