That's correct. It was very sad. He had a type of messiah complex that came as a result of it. He was convinced he was responsible for accomplishments in world history (some of which occurred before he was even born) and told everyone he was God.

Very sad situation.
The way Will calls himself the protector of women and families was just like the comments this friend of mine would make.

He is even crying over it. He is serious when he says this stuff and believes it.

Not trying to make fun or light of mental illness and I'm not a doctor, just my observation from someone who has seen this type of behavior.

Initial viewership numbers coming in on the Oscars is 13.73M, up 32% from last year. Peak viewership was 1hr24mins into the show.

I don't know what the point of this exercise was, but they did get more viewers this year compared to last year.

Still shows that most Americans aren't interested in award shows overall.

Edit - Initial numbers have increased from 11.5M to 13.73M.

Will Smith is no defender of women. If you read his biography, his work has always come before family. There are multiple instances of how he treated pass girl friends and his ex-wife. If you get the audio version, you can hear him say it.

It’s hard for us to relate with the Hollywood elite and the Oscars. They only celebrate obscure movies and have made it clear again that Hollywood and entertainers are above us all just like the California Politicians and Governor Newsom demonstrated during the pandemic.

To further muddle things up; from what I understand only movies that have a specific number of cast and crew from different races are allowed to be considered for an Oscar from here on out? So now the criteria to be nominated is that you have to be a movie that nobody watches and have the right number of races working on the film? Yeah that’s going to resonate with most people 🙄

I’ve always been a fan of Will Smith but it’s a really bad look for Hollywood and the Academy that he was allowed to sit there and enjoy the rest of the show. Just screams “we are above you and don’t play to the same rules.” Again nothing new but seeing it play out on Live TV is surreal. Well I didn’t see it play it out on live TV, I was at Disneyland.

On another note, would he have been allowed to stay and watch the show if he was White? No way in hell. Especially when the recipient of that slap was Black.

I also stopped watching most awards shows in general. I used to love watching the music awards shows. I stopped watching over 10 years ago when all the performances started looking like Illuminati devil worshipping at Satans altar. Just weird stuff.

Regarding the encanto live song, sure we didn’t get the broadway esque polyphony, but it was a nice surprise to have Megan thee stallion pop up and do an oscar tailored rap. It totally makes up for the non broadway type ending, cause fun surprises like this are what makes live performances more exciting, hearing a variation of something that you may have already heard ad nauseammmm.
I think I would've been pleased with the performance if: 1. they didn't advertise it as the first live performance of WDTAB; and 2. this was the opening number of the show.

I love Meg Thee Stallion! I like the concept of remixing one of the most popular songs of the year in a way that only live performances can! There was just a misalignment of what was being promised and what was being sold, and I'm disappointed because of that.

That’s fair, good points

Re: Will Smith
No. Just no. From the first time you play with others you are taught that hitting is not an acceptable response to words. I wish the Academy had removed him. Instead he got a standing ovation? Did they not understand what had happened?

My first reaction was to compare him to someone else in the news: both had violent overreactions to perceived slights then followed up with a rambling speech to justify it.

And really, you're going all testo macho but you slap instead of punch? After playing Ali? That was strange. As was laughing, then seeing his wife's face, then avenging. Some kind of dynamics going on there.

Final numbers appear to be 15.36M viewers, up 56% from last year.

But again overall still shows that a majority of Americans don't care about award shows.

Was it ruined? I see it as a celebration of the Latin culture on full display at the Oscars with an over-the-top performance that is common in that culture.

Sure it wasn't faithful to the movie version, but it appeared to be accepted by most in the audience from what I saw.

From what I've seen the Oscars can use an infusion of this type of over-the-top performance.
I liked it, but Megan Thee Stallion is a black girl who is born and raised in Texas, and the verse was very in line with North American stuff. The only thing Latin American there was her outfit maybe. Again I liked it, but I would say the original song is more of a celebration of their culture and is arguably more over the top toward the end.

And I will just say this on the "Slap heard round the world", both parties were wrong. However I can understand how a person might react in that way when someone is trying to poke fun of a loved ones aliment. My understanding is this isn't the first time the two had beef with each other.

She supposedly is of Mexican heritage, as she always talks about her Mexican grandmother.

Either way I'm sure Miranda himself is the one who created this rendition of his own song.

Her grandmother was black but could speak fluent Spanish (and Megan does not) which led to an interviewer joking that she’s basically Mexican. I can see how you were confused but Megan’s far more ‘Merican than Latin American.

That article doesn't dispute that her grandmother maybe Mexican, just that Megan doesn't speak Spanish.

Either way yes I agree with you that she is more American than Latin.
