Why do so many people here hate the Little Mermaid ride? I can understand Pooh and Buzz getting heat for what they replaced, but TLM? Why?

Because it does the opposite of what a good animated-classic-based dark ride should: It removes every single exciting element. The terrific movie has storms, shipwrecks, sharks, and one of the best battles in any Disney film. The ride is called “Ariel’s Undersea Adventure,” but the only thing that hapoens is Ariel goes out on a date. All thrills removed—not even Ursula is threatening.

In other words, it’s a very expensive waste of opportunity. It should have been much more than an omnimover ride through a sing-along. Nice air conditioning, though.

But people tend to consider it on level with travesties such as Journey Into YOUR Imagination, rather than wanting it to be improved.

I agree that’s taking the negativity too far. I find the ride a disappointment, but the first half is pleasant enough. If they’d remove everything after the Ursula cave & just use the space for one big monster battle, I’d call it a winner. 😃

I think a significant reason is that not long before the actual ride was announced, Tony Baxter showed off a concept design for a different variation of the attraction. It was well received and most agree it was superior to what was built. So, for most people, it’s not a case of accepting what we got, because we are aware of what could have been.

I’d LOVE to see an Ursula battle scene in the ride!
And also, thank you for reminding me of the concepts for the attraction. Having Tony Baxter’s touch is something that an attraction like say, Incredicoaster, which also has a bunch of wasted potential, lacks.
