The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

The Mandalorian has almost single handedly turned my opinion of Disney Star Wars around. I actually look forward to the new content being produced... which is more than I could say for anything since TLJ hit theaters.

If only Disneyland got the same treatment, where designers who understand the business and the park are given creative freedom to develop stuff that will actually improve Disneyland as a brand and experience. They've already basically shoved Tony out over the last 20 years- it's definitely time for new creatives to carry the torch.

I waited all day to see this, and THEY DIDN’T SHOW EITHER RIDE IN ACTION. Still a charming preview. It looks AMAZING.

My favorite bits: The warp pipe to the familiar lobby of Peach’s castle, the shrinking effect in the underground maze, and the queue inside Bowser’s Castle leading to that awesome statue.

And the music!!! I really hope they release a soundtrack. :)

Wow this looks pretty cool. A revamped Toontown could take a couple pointers from this playbook. The only thing it all feels very condensed. Did they not have a lot of room to work with ?

It’s squeezed into a corner of Universal Studios Japan but the Mario area is only about half of the full land that will include the under construction Donkey Kong area.

Feels almost like a next-gen version of Tom Sawyer expanded to an entire area. I'm glad to see someone do interactivity inside a theme park that doesn't mean "hey we got another shooting gallery on wheels!"

Looks interesting but After how many times does the “look my phone made the thing move” get old? Used sparingly it’s cool. Like Tinkerbell in the Peter Lan queue. It’s also just a well done effect.

I could be wrong, but I believe smartphone functionality so far has only been shown to be for inventory purposes, other than maybe logging in initially if you know what you're doing you could complete all the puzzles and get to the final boss, Bowser Jr.

Do I misremember the Power Up bands being touted out as being handed out for free a while back. Would be neat especially since they have more functionality than the HP wand (but don't look as cool).

The bands are not free but most of the effects and interactivity will work without one. The boss battle is the big feature one misses out on as there is no way (in this land) to track you without the band.

Wearing a headset seems really bizarre and especially ill-timed.
The headset is two parts. The piece with the lens and content that has been shown is attached to the ride vehicle. It attaches to a separate piece that you wear and is washed between uses like 3D glasses.

I was just going to post the Super Nintendo World video but it looks like I got beat. It looks so amazing, I love starting out the video in the N64 castle, what a throwback to begin with. The land does look very condensed but it still looks amazing. I would love to go some day, maybe my trip to Japan getting cancelled this year has a silver lining that when I finally do go I can visit Disney Sea and Super Nintendo World.

The Power-Up Band concept is very cool, it definitely sounds like the type of thing Disney wanted to accomplish with Galaxy's Edge before they cut the budget and removed the interactivity features. I really like the POW block demo, it gives you an actual activity, not just waiving a wand at something, you have to actually try and time things, like an actual game inside of a video game world. I will say I really do dig the style of the land, it really does look like the games brought into the real world, it is very stylized and done incredibly well. I also really really like the portion where you take damage from the Bob-omb and shrink down like you would in game when taking damage, that is such a cool concept and was pulled off very well.

The Mario and Luigi walkaround characters also look very good, the blinking eyes and movements are done very well and don't look like nightmare fuel like some poorly-executed characters do. Also the trophies for the Mario Kart ride look so well made in person in the queue, as well as the rest of the queue for the ride. I am really curious how the AR component of the ride will be executed, I hope it is done well and does not look strange when you actually ride, but I guess we'll have to wait for reviews to hear how it works out. All in all I think the land looks very well done, but I am curious how all the Power-Up activities will work when the place is packed with guests. Will there be lines around every Power-Up sensor? Or will there be enough scattered around that you could usually just approach one you see and activate it? I know the wand activities at Universal and the few interactive elements at Galaxy's Edge don't usually have lines to activate them, but it looks like the whole system in this land is much more involved and is more of an actual game, sorta like a Pokemon Go specifically for the park. I have a feeling that alone will cause the interactive parts of this land to be more popular than in the others I have mentioned.

It's loads better than the Springfield land, which seems to be the one awkward thing that Universal has done since HP land, at least on a large scale land. I had my doubts about the Mario games being turned into a theme park area, but it turned out pretty neat. Universal creative is beating Disney at their own game. Even a huge stinker like Fast and Furious at USF has a cool waiting area. It remains to be seen if the rides are good, but making it a collab with Nintendo so it's a legit interactive game and ride, I have hope.

What amuses me is that Disneyland had been given a second chance to relaunch Galaxy's Edge, which will fall by the wayside as the first one did. They had the opportunity to claim that the land was not truly finished until the opening of Rise of the Resistance, using the interim to address the issues. This current closure could have been yet another opportunity, on this coast at least. I understand not investing while the park isn't open, but it would behoove them to have improvements ready to debut simultaneous to Universal Hollywood's Nintendo opening The Mario Land really does look impressive and even in the promotional video the disparity shows.

Don't know about the USF version, but I actually though USH was done pretty well for what it is (A Simpsons themed shopping mall with some photo ops). It is mismatched with the Simpson's ride lacking exterior though.
