I salute everyone who has watched all the Cars films...I can't bring myself to watch the sequels.
They’re solid films. Cars 2 gets a lot of flack for being a feature length version of Mater’s Tall Tales, but as such it’s inventive and often very funny. Cars 3 is a nice take on the issues aging athletes face and doesn’t shy away from Lightning’s inevitable fate. Neither film merely recycles the first, and both are worth seeing once... but if you really can’t stand Mater, you can skip right to 3 without missing any story arc points. 😄

Cars 2 seems terrible. Have never seen it except for in bits and pieces when my son would watch it. Cars 3 was decent.

Cars 2 is the only Pixar film I haven’t seen from beginning to end.
Cars 2 is a very imaginative, fun look at the Cars version of Earth. It’s a good film, but they really should have titled it something else to give audiences a heads up (warning?) that it’s 99% about Mater. Remember, when it was released, the Mater’s Tall Tales cartoons were everywhere. Pixar... just MIGHT... have overestimated his popularity. A bit. 😄

Pardon my forthcoming diatribe, but I think Cars 3 has one of the most bizarre messages of all the Pixar films. To be fair I've only seen it once when my friend's daughter wanted to watch it and I was a bit distracted. However, as far as I could tell, Lightning's sponsor aka the "villain" of the movie, gave him nothing but fair dealings throughout. He only put his foot down in defense of the agreement that Lightning made and then seemed to back off of. Then there was the trainer car, who was portrayed as abused when the sponsor merely told her to do the job she was hired for. None of that matters if you have a dream, I guess. The confusing moral of the story is probably the only reason I remember it.

Haha I don’t remember all that. I’ve only seen it once. Only remember the feeling I’m left with.

I agree, Lightning’s new sponsor does get the short end of the stick. While not a villain, his desire for quick return on investment and inability to recognize the trainer’s full potential certainly is portrayed as “mean.” I think it’s fun that a movie about talking cars actually can spark discussions like this!

And, hey, if we wanna talk about strange messages, don’t get me started on Finding Dory’s “comedic” treatment of that one slow-witted, cross-eyed sea lion in a film that’s supposedly about diversity, acceptance, overcoming disadvantages, etc. etc.

There's just something about the Cars universe that I don't like, that feels off. Maybe because it's the only Pixar film where the universe is clearly our own but we're not in it for some reason? I just can't buy sentient cars (although now that self-driving cars are maybe a reality...).

I find the original Cars is (was? haven't watched recently) beautifully animated but a struggle for me to get through. So the idea of more Cars is just a non-starter. Hearing that Cars 2 was trashed by the critics was all that I needed to feel validated in skipping them.

I don't hate Mater, but a little of Larry the Cable Guy goes a LOOONNNGGG way.

Holy cats, there are more than double of those Cars shorts than there are Toy Story shorts!

Even though I am EXTREMELY over all things Toy Story (thanks Iger, Chapek, and assorted minions and underlings), I feel very offended on Toy Story's behalf!

The Cars Universe is one of those things that gets weird the more you think about it and Cars 2 does not help. Cars 3 is the Pixar live action remake I’d be curious to see just because it could be cool cars being driven fast in beautiful places. Of course I can also watch Top Gear and The Grand Tour.

I hadn't thought of that before, but you're right and it's probably best not to look too deep into it. Sometimes I wonder how considerate filmmakers really are of such subjects. I overlooked the sea lion, but the most recent example that got under my skin was Thor's portrayal in the last Avengers movie. He is the butt of many jokes, most of which are callously based around the fact that his behavior and history from the previous movies show that he is in the throes of depression. Once again, probably best not to look too deep into it.

There’s absolutely no denying the Cars universe does NOT stand up to any kind of close scrutiny or logic. But neither do the worlds of Toy Story or Monsters Inc. I think Cars just occasionally goes places where the suspension of disbelief gets very strained (There’s a Santa Car? They celebrate Christmas? Let’s... not explore that path any further...😄)

In the end, it’s just a surreal film comedy world. It either tickles your fancy or it doesn’t.

So Disneyland Adventures is currently free on XBox’s Gamepass service. Trying it out... I forgot the Planet Coaster studio, Frontier, did this! It shows in the details...

Even though Cars is far from Pixar's best, at least it spawned an excellent land, and for that I'm grateful. Experiencing the movie for yourself in 5 minutes with RSR is a far better experience than actually watching any movie in the series.

It's such a lovingly made preservation of mid-2000s Disneyland (and DCA sort of, if you peek beyond the fences a bit). It's a lovely impression of the Disneyland of my childhood.

Oh, this reminds me! There's an interesting website called sorta.app that allows you to rank things based on 1v1 match-ups. I recently did one for Pixar movies and was a bit surprised at the results:

There's some rankings I'd change here and there (I don't know if I'd rank all the Toy Story movies as high as I did, and Coco definitely needs to move up in the list!), but it's a pretty fun way to figure out rankings if anyone's interested.

This was a lot of fun! I enjoyed taking the quiz and some of the choices were really tough, but I think this looks pretty accurate. I haven't seen every Pixar film so that sorta throws off some choices but whatever. I had fun doing the MCU quizzes as well as the Star Wars Films quiz and the Mandalorian Season 2 episode quiz. Thank you for the share!

Top Gear > Pixar.

Fact.

Anyone get the chance to see the Ratatouille "musical" streaming online? I was surprised by how coherent it sounded given the crowdsourced development - didn't sound too out of place from some stage shows you'd find at the parks (although I guess that reflects the state of park entertainment really). But I really miss live theater and this was a nice, cheesy good time to appreciate it. Well worth the $5 (or whatever you're financially able to donate) to the Actors' Fund.
