Yeah know, they let you buy personal cars now.
For several years now, I've lived in a situation where I don't need a car. Buses, shuttles, Uber and good old walking get me everywhere I need to go. I rent a car for a day when I've no other choice. I'm saving a ton of money, but--most of all--it feels great to not be "owned by a car" and pay for its care and feeding. I don't miss driving at all. I don't miss getting angry at other drivers. I like being able to put on some music, close my eyes, and let someone else deal with it. I do not miss living in Los Angeles.

The downside, of course, includes fellow bus passengers--such as ones who leave liquid parting gifts. :(

Reminds me of this story about a woman who sat in a urine soaked seat on a flight from London to Cape Town.
I'm *really* glad my trip was only ten minutes. My town's buses have these stupid seats that are upholstered thick foam cushions with a pattern deliberately designed to camouflage stains. Any liquid apparently goes straight through the fabric, leaving it nearly dry, and nestles in the thick foam waiting for the next unsuspecting citizen to sit down and get a surprise. I wish they'd just replace all the seats with plastic benches.

Browsing through Hulu on my Nintendo Switch and noticed The Brady Bunch is there-- Which means I can watch the Kings Island episode for the first time in decades!
(Twenty five minutes later...)
Wow. If this was real life, the Bradys would've been kicked out of the park for safety violations a dozen times. And arrested for costume theft and harassment. What a "bunch" of jerks! And Jan ruins everything.

The awful jokes, the cheesy music, the laugh track oohing and gasping at the rides... But what beautiful shots of a gorgeous park in its early years. Funny how this cornball half hour is STILL the best TV episode ever shot in a non-Disney theme park.

Where is Kings Island? I'm pretty sure I went there as a kid.

Cincinnati. It has the Eiffel Tower replica at its center, and its Wooden Racer coaster started the big coaster revival. Its Beast is the longest coaster in the U.S. In addition to Bradys, it also had to cope with Partridges.
Yeah, I went there. I remember riding the Beast, I think. We went to most of the East theme parks because I grew up in Pennsylvania. I remember we went to the Cincinnati Reds game when they were playing the pirates. We had our Pirates shirts on and we got boo'd by the Reds fans.

I enjoyed the Son of Beast because it felt like you were going to die.

There was also a ridiculous trippy Tomb Raider movie themed ride when I went.
Multiple times, I really truly thought I was not going to get out of the car because the ride was so brutally rough, the lap bar would click about 3 clicks past what was comfortable. I've also heard that the Brady Bunch almost died when a camera wasn't mounted properly on the Racer and a mechanic snuck in the night before and fixed it, saving their lives. This may be an urban legend, just like how my dad has still never stopped telling us he was in line for the racer when they filmed it.

Stopped watching the new Lost in Space on Netflix on Ep. 3 during the flashback showing "Dr. Smith" murdering her twin sister so she could assume her ID and leave Earth. Fine acting all around, but the show is slow, grim and obsessed with blood.

Thanks, Netflix. Thanks a lot. Should've gone with this version of a reboot pitch instead:

Thoughts from my Saturday visit-

  • I did my best to avoid the PPP, but was accidentally in line for Alice during the parade. Hearing Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" while in line for a classic Disney dark ride, right next to the Matterhorn- is an experience I hope to never have again. The Inside Out float already looks worn, and is very lackluster.
  • Alien Pizza Planet isn't any better in person. They changed the outdoor tables, but left the inside ones the same. There are a few posters on the wall- but no arcades or anything to tie it into the one from the film. At the very least, they need a claw machine with the green aliens.
  • The Jungle Cruise skipper I had butchered the classic jokes- the comedic timing was off, and it was one of the flattest boats I've seen. She also skipped the back side of water joke- which I've heard phrased as "the front side of rock" in the past, but have never heard ignored entirely. One of the worst I've had, and helped me appreciate the skippers that do their job well even more.
  • During Fantasmic, about half way through, I realized that I just wasn't enjoying the new one- at all. That's the third time I've seen it, and I don't think I'll be seeing it again in the near future. It's a shame, because I used to get irrationally excited for the show- and still stand by my belief that the 2010 version was the best thing Disney has done, in any medium.
  • Splash Mountain being closed was a huge loss- since it's the best ride in the park- but the day wasn't overly crowded, and we were able to do everything else more because of it.
  • I love Maxpass. Not having to run all over the park for fastpasses is great.
  • Once the bride scene is gone, that means the battle, water well torture scene, bride scene, and Pirate with the map scenes will all have mostly different audio and premise that they did originally. That's quite a bit of the ride, and it will be curious to see how the ride is 20 years from now.
  • the park was very clean. After going to Six Flags frequently over the last few months, it was a breath of fresh air to not have gum everywhere, planters that are maintained, and employees that, at the very least, pretend to like their job.
But, in spite of all my nitpicks- the day was fun. Loads of fun. I don't go as frequently now as I used to, since I no longer have an AP- and I savor the park that much more because of it. It's easy to get caught up with the management bashing, rumors, trashing everything wrong in the park, etc- but when I was there, most of that faded away, and I got caught up in the fun of it. At the end of the day, it didn't matter that Pixar Fest blows- since it's so easy to avoid and is minimal within Disneyland.

Sometimes it feels as though Disney fans online hate the parks- both the present, and future- I know there are people on Micechat who think the park peaked in the 60's and 70s before Eisner- and I often find myself getting caught up in being critical of everything that happens there. This recent visit helped reinforce my love for Disneyland, and helped remind me that the park is still an amazing place- despite all of management's shortcomings- and the park still has a ways to go before it loses what makes it special.
