The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

Looks better than most recent Disney movies, but I have a feeling the moral of this is going to be terrible. The king is clearly justified in his actions of not granting every wish yet he's made out to the be villain?

Not really excited for this one and also feel they should have been more bold artistically, but did we watch the same trailer? He’s very clearly painted as ‘bad’ to me. The kingdom looks to be an autocracy and he has absolute power, yet he’s somehow the good guy to you?

but this was really just "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" dressed up in some nifty animation.
Never watched the movie but saw the trailer and it seems to only revolve around interracial dating (side note I don’t like that line about just seeing himself as a man, it completely erases the context of what it meant to be black during that time. But I’ll give it a pass cause the writers probably meant well and the movie is old).

Anyways, Elemental isn’t really about that to me, to me it’s a story about first generation immigrants with interracial dating being just one of the ideas being explored with regards to a 1st gen pov. Not my favorite, but I quite enjoyed the movie personally.

Agreed they should have been bolder, but I will drop this:

Makes me wonder how this film will look once it hits D+.

I watched Elemental about two weeks ago and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I went in with no expectations, which is likely partially why. The plot is a bit predictable, but it’s one that happens in real life all the time. I liked watching Ember and Wade’s relationship evolve and blossom, and I like how the film tackled typical values from immigrant families.

It’s nowhere near Pixar’s best, but I found myself thinking about it the next day, so I guess that says something.

Some of those screen caps do look great in 4k, but, especially after knowing they were going for a watercolor style, it still feels too safe, too close to looking like 'just a 3d animated' film.

I mean even as recently as Strange World, in a short scene in the middle, they did some moving stills of 3d characters/env rendered in a painterly look Ala official artwork of Loz Botw/Totk that looked bold enough and removed enough from a regular 3d animation look. Why can't they make a whole film like that?

Still though, I did gain more interest in the film and might actually go ahead and watch it in theaters, especially since it's the quote unquote 100th anniversary animated film/ they might have some artistic surprises in the middle.

Remember, though, it’s a fairy tale and fairy tales—including the ones Disney has adapted—are full of good guy rulers of autocracies. It’s just storytelling shorthand, and the king/queen/emperor can be good, bad, or (maybe most often) a flawed human with a lesson to learn, depending on their role in the story. Whether or not King Triton had absolute power or was part of a more complex Atlantica governing system wasn’t important in Little Mermaid; his role in the story dealt with him becoming a wiser and more open-minded father and leader.

My guess re: “Wish” and King Whatisname’s role is flawed human with a lesson to learn.

Right, I understand fantastical elements and people’s affinity towards the simplicity and fantasy of monarchy.

But this trailer shows that the story is framing it a different way than say king triton. Why should I expect this to treat that system the same way a traditional Disney fairytale treats it, when we already see them framing it differently in the trailer.

to put it simply, I don’t understand how you can be shown a guy wanting absolute power (in a very in your face way), and then conclude he’s justified and be surprised why he’s the “bad guy”

True. If, indeed, the story is actually *about* Whatisname being a terrible leader in a broken system, then yes, you could be spot-on in your assessment of the character.

This being a modern Disney film, however, I’m kinda expecting something more along the lines of tragic backstory makes king behave badly/emotional breakthrough/everyone hugs it out. I’d love to be wrong and get a new Disney animated film with a real villain. But there’s a talking pajama goat and a tiny star with a fake mustache, so …

I would love to be delightfully surprised by this one, and I keep reminding myself that I can’t remember the last time I felt a trailer did an animated film justice. So, fingers crossed. The hilarious Kuzco aside, I don’t believe Disney feature animation’s ever done a Bad-Monarch story before. That in itself could be interesting.

Many pages back, I discussed my love for Osamu Tezuka's "Unico" and my excitement for the upcoming "Unico: Awakening" manga. Well just recently, Scholastic announced that they will publish the manga and will run for a total of 4 volumes (rumored to be six according to one website).

They also showed off newer panels from the first volume showing Unico and Chloe the Cat.

The first volume will be released August 6, 2024 (Fall/Winter 2023 for Kickstarter backers).

It will also launch Graphix imprint's new line of Kid-Friendly Manga and their first "Graphix Manga".

Happy New Water Year, Gang! 🥳 🍾 🥳

I love any excuse to host or attend a party, and California just started its new water year, so a party is in order. Here is today's official update from the U.S. Drought Monitor, a service of NOAA and the US Department of Agriculture. California is starting its new water year at the end of summer entirely free of drought! That's extremely good news.

A total of 6% of California is still classified as "Abnormally Dry", parts of Siskiyou and Modoc counties way up north, and a pocket out around Lake Havasu along the Arizona border. But what a difference just one year makes on the map below!

How will you be celebrating the New Water Year this week?

Even though it's very warm in SoCal this week, I'll be keeping the old Slip-N-Slide in the garage (wisely, the neighbors don't need to see that spectacle) but I think this evening I'll make myself a themed cocktail of some kind to celebrate. Maybe a from-scratch Bloody Mary using fresh produce and garnishments grown in California's Central Valley that is now entirely drought free? Thank you farmers, we couldn't live without you! Cheers!
