the glass monument thing in front of Spaceship Earth

They took it down when they put up the wand. So I believe that because it's gone now ( the wand ) they should put it back up. The monolith as it should be referred to was a signiture item of EPCOT, and should be there.

The Original EPCOT Fountain was removed in 1999 with the Millennium Additions to EPCOT and it's entry plaza.

With the addition of the Wand, stripes on the SSE legs, and LaL the futuristic and green look gave way to mirror LaL. The fountain now is made of the same marble that LaL is to give the plaza unified look. The stripes that mimic LaL on SSE are there for the same reason.

(Make it what you will, but if LaL needs THIIIIS much help being assimilated into a setting, it really has a problem)

The original sculpture is sadly long gone. This site has info on the 1999 plaza `remodelling` here http://www.wdwmagic.com/2000_legacy.htm

The sculpture actually outlived the parks original logo icon by 6 years. I guess at least it lasted that long.

Martin...Just did a bit of looking through my records. It appears that the sculpture was removed BEFORE 1999? This picture has the copyright of 1997 with it gone.

The original glass sculpture thing also "yellowed" as time went by. Plus one cast member told me the top of one of those things was cracked since day one.

Hey, Evan. Take a look at that picture you posted again. While it has a copyright of 1997, is that not a Mark IV monorail in that picture? Didn't the Mark VI replace those in the early 90s (early 1991 if that spiel is correct. ;)) So, if thats a Mark IV we're looking at, then that means we're most likely talking sometime in the eighties in this pic. So I ask, where is the monument? Maintainence? Was it replaced with a new one and we just don't know? Either way, its not in that pic, and that pic is definitely not from 1997. :veryconfu

Damn....

Good eye!:sohappy:

And I just noticed that this is also proved by the color of Communicore...It's still the original beige. It was painted pink in the 1990's.

Looks like we have a EPCOT Mystery on our hands!:sohappy:

Oh yeah, that's right. The old Communicore beige.  Kinda wish they'd paint it a color similar to that again. Heck, just paint it a different, more neutral color! That pink's getting old. :(

Still, that confirms the prescence of this mystery: WHERE WAS THE MONUMENT???????

Yes, that and the clashing purple tarps make Innoventions Plaza VERY "arid" and jumpy. Communicore Court on the other hand had a nice calmer feel facilitated by the greenery and waterways.

If they can't bring back the plants (traffic flow!) they could at least paint Innoventions a nice blue/Silver to match SSE.

Still though...this is VERY interesting. Martin will most likely have the answer.

Probably. And I bet its a really simple answer that will make this whole "mystery" talk seem really foolish.

I'm pretty sure that the monument wasn't taken down until the big refurb of that area in 1999. I was there in summer 1998 and would have remembered if the monument was suddenly gone.

In the 1997 copywrite picture, the fountain base is still the same one that went with the monument (not the new rock base) so odds are it was taken down for maintenance in that picture.

I was there as well...And I remember many a refurb wall up that trip. So I don't know what to think.:dazzle:

And the base is still there, under the rocks...It's just been covered over/ painted that wonderful pinkish/rockish LaL color.:hurl::lol:
