For me it is pretty simple. I came from a dirt poor upbringing. We had nothing. No, to get up to nothing we had to borrow something or it would be less than nothing.
Anyway, I remember lots of hungry days and nights as a kid. The best meals were when we visited grandad and granny or the free lunch program at school.
For us, it was mostly beans and potatoes, but every now and then, and it was not often, we would have Spam, and it was a real treat. The salty, slightly tangy texture, especially fried and served with fried potatoes, made for something special, especially when you had not had anything but beans and cornbread, or peanut butter sandwiches for awhile.
So it is sort of a nostalgia thing. These days I like to try different things with Spam, but still will have just a plain ole Spam sandwich sometimes.
We did not have much, but we had love and every now and then, some Spam, especially when they had some dented cans the grocery store marked down on sale.
And yes, when we went to Hawaii a couple of years ago I had some Spam. Grilled Spam and pineapple was good, as was Spam musubi.
Here is a Spam hash I made for breakfast awhile back.
