Yep, we think alike. We always used all of our rooms too. But shhhhh....my formal dining room it a family room-always. A better use of the space. My dining room furniture is at one end of the Great Room closest to the kitchen-the formal dining room as designed is off in another room off the opposite side of the kitchen. Figured we need the family room more than we needed a table to have its own room. Then again my formal china my Mom insisted I must have is still in its quilted zipper containers. Never used. My Mom is trying to unload her formal china on my DD. DD keeps finding reasons not to take it 'just yet.'
It's so funny these days. Even huge houses we design, 10,000 sq. ft.+, the clients don't want or use a formal dining room anymore. It's usually an nformal space connected to the kitchen and great room. Also, huge eat up kitchen islands, so everyone can hang together. It's just so cool, relaxing, and casual that way...!
And the kitchen, dining, and great room are almost always connected and about everyone being together and having fun. No pretense. Almost no one seems to entertain very formally anymore, and I'm good with that!
