Many families have complex relationships. Some family members (and relatives) you can love, but still dislike them and keep a distance. That Norman Rockwell painting about the happy, multi-generational family, at the Thanksgiving table comes to mind; some families are really like that. As a kid, I always thought that was normal for everyone. As an adult, I realize it's not necessarily true in many cases.
I feel the same, when my Grandmother died, we never had another family holiday. I guess it wasn't all that nice among my mother's sister. You do grow up and learn a lot about complex relationships.
