We have had a terrible car weekend. Dh realized one of his right front tires was flat when he got to the office. AAA put the spare on while he was working. Yesterday he took the car to Firestone because he wouldn’t have been able to get an appointment for his car until the end of this coming week. So they patched it at Firestone and we took a drive to the animal shelter because we are considering another cat. As we left the shelter the car was driving funny. He turned around and parked back at the shelter. Lo and behold the tire was flat. He put the spare back on. He called Firestone back and the guy told him he couldn’t help him because he was short staffed. Mind you this is only 2 hours later. Anyway we get home and he calls the dealership that is closed, but they have someone answering calls. She says to bring the car in first thing and it would get taken care of. So he does that and finds out the sidewall got ruined because he need to drive on it for 50 feet to get to the shelter. So we are in the hole for 4 new tires. He was technically going to change them in December so this would have happened anyway. Here is the crazy part, when we were driving home from another errand, turning onto a road that leads to our development there was a tree with a newly partially broken branch. It was hanging. Dh tried to avoid it but it caught the antenna. The antenna smacked the corner of the windshield and caused 2 cracks in the windshield. So now he needs a new windshield! There is a Safelight near us, so I make an appointment online. They cannot fix it til Monday. So he will take my car to work Monday. In any case these unforeseen car issues cost us over $1000 in 24 hours. Just what we needed 2weeks out from vacation. When it rains it pours.

Nothing angers me more then the idea that the tire companies have sponsored that you have to have matching tires on the car.🤬 The only thing that has to match is the size. One tire is just the same as the others even if they have different names on the side. It doesn't matter.

As long as you were going to change them in December anyway, I can understand the reason for four replacements, but, so many times I have heard said. Oh, I have a tire that needs replacing due to sidewall damage, so I have to change them all. You do not. You can replace one or you can replace two, three or four, it will not make any difference to the handling or safety of the vehicle. I had that run around one time when I was coming back from Florida. I was still in Florida on I-95 when I had a tire blow out. I went to Costco which was close by and they practically insisted that I do all four tires in spite of the fact that the remaining tires were practically new. I refused! Ending of the story, that single odd tire remained on the car until I traded it in a year later. Many people want to change them because of vanity and wanting to have them all look the same, tread design wise, but it isn't necessary for operating a vehicle.

End of rant. Carry on with your regularly scheduled programs.

Yup there is no radial/crossply issue with modern tyres.

Yea, but is it the same if it is about tires??? ;)

It is a common scam especially used against anyone that they think knows nothing about tires (or tyres if you drive on the wrong side of the road). :) I told the story about the time my wife (before we got married) had a minor accident where she slid on snow sideways and the wheel, just above the tire itself hit an object and bent the wheel slightly. They told her she had to replace all her tires because the one was bent along with the wheel and had to be replaced and therefore all of them needed to be replaced to be safe. First off, I reminded her that the wheel was metal and permanently, slightly bent out of shape, but, the tires were made out of rubber and returned to their original shape as soon as it was taken off the bent wheel. The very reason why I spent hours with my girls going over the mechanics of automobiles so that they wouldn't be taken advantage of when they were on their own. After my divorce I briefly dated a lady that didn't even know how to add windshield washer solution. As far as that goes, she didn't know how to open the hood either.

@donaldtoo , I know you work with CAD programs. I have zero experience. Today, I took a 3D workshop (offered by my public library, for free). The man used TinderCad or something like that. My brain doesn't really function in computer things as it is (with the exception of basic things like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), but I worked a little bit with his program, (just using the preloaded shapes, etc.).

Anyway, the man was going to print out the various designs that people made, and maybe I didn't save it in certain way, as the file was supposed to come to our home email, but it didn't). So I guess I can't forward it to him to print after hours (he had a few classes today, so was going to print the things later). Oh well.

Just listening to him was interesting as he was a whizz with all this technology. I thought about people who use CAD type programs -- it's a whole different type of skill, and some people adapt to it better than others, I guess. I can see how it's really important for architects and engineers. :)

Very cool, Minnie...!!!!!
Yes, I use AutoCAD extensively, and am familiar with Tinkercad, but, have never used it. The 3D program I use is actually called SketchUp.
There are many different ways to build the models, and I have learned over time the most efficient and quickest ways to build good models. I took a little bit of what one person taught me, then another, etc., to find my own groove. I’ve even helped one of the main partners with SketchUp stuff several times. The latest being he didn’t know how to draw elliptical arches. I showed him how to go into the circle command (he also didn’t know that you could select the number of segments you want the circle to have), draw a circle of a specific radius, and then select the scaling tool to scrunch ;) the circle to whatever ellipse radius you want. Draw a line across the midpoint, then erase the bottom part and the midpoint line, rotate it up 90 degrees, then paste it on the square arch you want, and push/pull it through the thickness of the wall to create the arch you want...!!!!! :hilarious:
I made it sound a bit more complicated than it actually is, but, once you do it it’s like second nature...3D modeling is really cool and fun...!!! :)
