I’ve had corneal abrasions twice. The second time I knew the routine, so it wasn’t nearly as stressful, but the first time was pure hell.
It happened in the afternoon and just got progressively worse, to the point where I got absolutely no sleep that night (I didn’t even know what was wrong yet, as I could still see just fine except for all the tearing from the pain.
Called out of work and got an appt. with my GP first thing the next morning. He numbed it up with some drops, did a quick exam, said I have a scratched cornea, patched it up, and said it should be fine by the next morning. I got almost no sleep again that night and it wasn’t better. When I called his office he called an ophthalmologist to get me in right away.
She gave me the numbing drops again (they will only do that for your exam, as it’s similar to a football player gettin’ a shot for pain and goin’ back on the field and doin’ further damage because the drugs masked the pain - has anybody else here ever seen “North Dallas Forty”?
), did a thorough exam, and said it was a corneal abrasion...a scratch or cut would have healed much quicker.
She put a cream in my eye, patched it up real tight and told me to go home and only watch TV for the next 2 days...no reading, or anything that would make my eyes move around too much.
2 days later in the shower I took the patch off and started to panic...that eye was like looking through wax paper!!!!!
I made a quick call to the ophthalmologists office and she forgot to tell me to expect the cream would sit in the abrasion before clearing up in a few days as it healed all the way...!!!!!
Sure ‘nough, it cleared up completely in a few days, and you can imagine what a relief that was...!!!!!!!
Anyhoo, as I said, I knew the routine for the second occurrence, so no wax paper panic...!!!
