O.k. Here's a thrilling question for a Sunday afternoon. Anyone buy a vacuum cleaner recently? Our place here is small, with just one 5x7 foot rug in the livingroom. and there is carpet going up the stairs.

I have a regular (light-weight) Eureka upright vacuum that I bought maybe 8 years ago, and I also have a small hand-vac. Here's the problem: neither one has much suction. The upright one cleans a bit, but sometimes some dirt also comes out the back! :p (Yes, I empty the dirt cup thing each time.) The little hand-held vac leaves more dog hair than it suctions up on the stairway rug.

Priced out different vacuums today at Target and BB & Beyond. So many choices--very confusing. Walked out. Do you know that some of the Dyson ones are over $500?! Heck, I'll leave the place a dump before I pay that! :hilarious:

Obviously, there's much cheaper models of other brands. Just curious what other people here use.

My dh has a Craftsman shop vac that's older than we've been together. I miss Craftsman of yester year:(

Hubs has a "shop vac" huge thing that he drags up from the basement, if he makes a mess up here in his small workshop room. (It looks even a lot larger than Mr. Ferret's Henry Hoover shop vac.) Works very well, but it's way too big, heavy, and cumbersome for me--and would be dangerous if I tried to vacuum the stairwell.

Think I'll just keep looking around over the next few weekends. Thinking of maybe getting a heavier duty hand vac, just for the stairs. As for the livingroom rug, it really doesn't get much dirt--I can always shake out the dirt in the backyard if I had to. Or maybe I'll look for the Shark one that @MySmallWorldof4 has -- but I did notice it's out of stock in my area. Of course . . .

O.k. But part of the issue here is that there are MULTIPLE models of ALL the various brands. Even Hoover (as in @Mr Ferret 88 's) model that he shared. Never heard of the "Henry Hoover" model? Must be a Guernsey thing! :joyfull:

You can buy directly from the company. I like the rocket because the top lifts off completely from the stick base and I can wasily fo the stairs and get into cracks with the attachment. I bought it directly from Shark and got a great deal on Black Friday. They sell them at Lowes, Walmart, and Amazon too.

My family has an Oreck upright and small hand-vac. They’ve lasted us 10+ years with few issues. I don’t remember how much they were though.

I have one that I bought at an auction over 20 years ago for $5.00. It was a used Kenmore Tank type. I still use it, however, the plastic coating of the wand/hose deteriorated to the point that entire hose is now made up of the metal spiral skeleton coated with many layers of Duct Tape. It still is working fine, the beater bar has never even needed a new drive belt. The motor is powerful and I can't bring myself to throw it out and get a new one. Every once in a while I have to patch up a part of the hose that either tore or just cracked. Easy fix just another layer of Duct Tape. Years ago I bought a huge supply of disposable vacuum bags. When I use those up I will either have to start just emptying them out and reusing them or get a new Vacuum. Either way my guess is that it owes me nothing at this point. It was a very good investment. But, alas, they don't make them like that anymore.
