One day, I'll go check out IKEA. We have one in the state (not close to me), but some day I'll go take a peek over there.

Oh go! IKEA is a real adventure like nothing else. It took us the better part of a day to walk it when it opened in Illinois. Warning: Get a grip on you finances before you go cause many of the prices are surprisingly low and you tend to toss things in and in an in the shopping cart and they actually have dump carts near the cashier lanes for change of heart patrons so they discard on floor. My kids college life was from IKEA and we have sprinkles of IKEA likely in every room. Some stuff is better than others. Go on a rainy day you will walk and walk and walk and get all the exercise you need. Our IKEA is 3 stories. On ground level is a snack bar with wondrous cinnamon rolls, $1 coffee, 50 cent hotdogs, Pizza....On the top level is their restaurant. You can eat a full hot meal for $5-7 dollars with beverage, salad. Up there they also have a yummy chocolate cake if you need a snack. If you get their free members card (kiosk on the spot) you from the get free coffee or hot tea every time you are there from the upstairs restaurant in a real coffee mug.

Oh, I had to laugh over the plastic, custom covers for the sofa! I knew a family that had those, and thought they were odd and felt weird to sit on (especially in the summer with no A/C--you'd sweat on those). But it just struck me as pathetic that the mother would only take those ugly things off for the holidays, or a special party during the year when "company" would arrive, etc. So essentially, they bought this furniture that wasn't really meant for using, just looking at, for 90% of the year?!

When I was real small my Mom had a beautiful custom sofa that wrapped around a corner and it was stuffed with cotton type fluff not that plastic stuff of today. Well my GodMothers daughter pee'd on it and she was likely 5-6 and soaked the sofa. It was cleaned but eventually was trashed. Enter plastic covers on the next sofa.

Never ever do I remember those plastic covers ever being off the sofa or the chair. The last year or so she took them off cause they started to crack 20 years later but the fabric beneath was pretty dry rotted. When she tossed the sofa and redid the chair she did not plastic the replacements. But...wait for it...when my kids were born the Queen Ann dining room chairs cushions went under plastic...old habits.

But once we moved from the city a smaller home to the suburbs I lived a very different life. I can't remember ever hanging out or being in the living room. That room was for the most part off limits as was the front door. Sis's and my rooms were in order. Nothing on the dressers nightstand beyond a book. Toys were kept in the basement and we often played down there, it was fully decked out. Family time per say in family room or kitchen. I was well into high school when I finally got a shelf unit in my room and got to have personal stuff beyond clothing in my room and practically fell over when I was allowed to have a stereo and the old old black and white TV in my room.

I did the exact opposite raising my kids. I'll take a picture of the unit my DD has in her room to hold all the stuff girls have and keep in their rooms.

Oh my, it is painful. At least you seem to know a lot about cars. (I'm useless when it comes to cars.) I went with hubby when we bought our new (used) car a year ago, February. He's really good at cutting through the "pitch" they give you, and he just goes and looks under the hood, takes it for a test drive, etc. The price negotiating part is nerve-wracking, at best, particularly when you're putting in for an auto loan. I hope you find something you really like, at a fair price. Fingers crossed for you, buddy! ;)

It is done. He got a Chevy Cruise. Our family history of American cars remains intact but it was a close one. My DD will break that. She has been diligently saving for a Subaru Forester. She kept job #2 to make that happen, likely this year.

My favorite shows that they used to have were Design on a Dime, Room by Room, and the Carol Duval Show. They all had such clever and creative ideas, and often their ideas were budget-friendly. They'd also repurpose common items, and get double the use out of them. On the higher end of the interior design spectrum was (from Canada) Candice Olson's "Divine Design"-- she was extremely talented. Gosh, I miss all those shows. :(

Me too. I learned on one of those shows how to paint my living-room a certain way. It has 7 layers of paint that gave the walls this older aged look and it changes from bright by day to warm and rich over night by lamp light. I love it so much. They taught you step by step how to do it. So many things I've done with my home over the last 10 years were thanks to the shows that taught you something like color repetitiveness numbers, the amount of bushes or flowers to group to balance out, grouping planters. My retro 50's kitchen and my drape window boxes I learned from them. I genuinely love doing stuff like this myself and doing it well and right. The window and door frames I've replace and the crown moldings would have been out of reach to have someone else do.

When Jean Chretien was PM there were plans to give Ottawa a national mall. Sadly too many residents of Ottawa were against it. I really think this would have been great.

I dunno, it seems so decidedly Un-Canadian.

Also, it would completely bisect Sparks St. That would be a shame.
Did you ever eat at D'Arcy McGee's? As fine a pub as any I've encountered in NYC.

Go Tammy! I'm so glad I can sew. My drapes are amazing!
Speaking of Tammy, she was here today - but not before stopping somewhere that had an un-neutered Siamese.
My cats went wild! Max has always been Tammy's biggest fan, but I don't recall Penny ever climbing on her before.

They were glued to her for a full 10 minutes, sniffing like hound dogs!

P.S. See that blue garment on the far right? Hubby's shorts. Been there at least a month. Going in the garbage shortly.

Hmpf. We have noted that we have the same exact furniture in our family rooms. Does yours have the lounge extension on both the love seat and the couch? Mine only has it on the the couch portion.

I only have one lounge extension. It's just an ottoman with a specialized reversible cushion (as you know).
I have it on the right side of the love seat. I believe yours is reversed.
