None of us comes with an owner's manual. All we can do is try and figure it out as we go along. From an objective point of view here, I don't see anyone to blame. He wanted to try out and he did. Good for him, and good for you letting him try.. Unfortunately, not everyone makes a team.

He's a little kid redirecting his disappointment and anger toward you. (Family members are easy targets. I did that a few times as a kid, too--I'd try to shift the blame for something that didn't work out right for me, to one of my siblings.) That didn't last long, though--they wouldn't put up with that from their little sister! :p

I think what he’s having the most difficult time with, is he’s not viewing it as ‘not making a team’. He’s viewing it as being kicked off of a team, and his coach not believing in him.
It’s just so hard to get a kid this age to understand after they’ve already been playing on a team, and especially after the amazing season that the team had, the boys genuinely all were such a great group of kids. I think he’s old enough to understand it, or should understand it, but I don’t know if he fully does.

I wish Kid’s Came with Owner’s Manuals!! ;)

Personally I don’t think it is fair for a kid to have been on a team, and had done well on that team, to have one tryout in horrible weather count completely against him. It would leave a bad taste in my mouth per the system being used. Then they have more tryouts in the fall? Why don’t they then combine the results of both try outs and not kick a player that is on the team until a fair assessment can be made? Everyone has an off day. Guess you can go on and on about this. Just hope T will get over the disappointment quickly.

The tryouts last week were for the Fall Season, tryouts in the Fall are for the Spring Season.

I think/know that he honestly believed he would get chosen even with the bad tryouts. Apparently he did awesome in 1v1s, awesome in agility, very good in 2v2s, but made a lot of mistakes once they got into 4v4 then 6v6.. those are most heavily weighed because that is the team dynamic. They had other kids who consistently did well in in all segments, and that’s why they couldn’t choose him, but decided to wait-list. This is what the coaches explained to me.
They also had tons of encouragement to “please attend summer training regardless” (even though it’s supposed to be exclusive to club players).. and “if he doesn’t get called up please have T tryout again in the Fall”

There is no way that he would go to summer training with his former teammates under these circumstances, and I fully understand that. I think that’s too much to ask.

Every 6 months? Ridiculous. I can see once a year. They barely even played any games.

This is my problem, and my parents and sister are furious. (Not that he didn’t make it, but at what youth soccer has become) My sister and I both played soccer growing up, my sister played in college, and my dad played baseball in college.. so we’re all used to competitive sports.. but this was almost ridiculous with how many cancellations the team had. For a kid like T who does need to work thru his nerves- those extra practices/games could have made a difference in his playing confidence.
In the tourney that they won- he had a total of 14 assists and 5 goals... he was on point that whole weekend, but when they played “up” in the tourney against the 9U Premier, he did get nervous. He made a couple of mistakes in the last two 9U games- the coach took him out, talked to him- put him back in, and then T went back to being the normal player he was. I wonder if that impacted their decision though.
(T’s team was 8U Premier, they played in the 9U bracket because the coach thought it would be more competitive for them since we were winning all of our games in the 8U)

The whole thing is just sad.

@ajrwdwgirl Are you and Brad watching the Stanley Cup? Dh and I are. We would like Vegas to win. An amazing story if they do.

We have been watching the games, even though our team went out in the first round. We would like to see Vegas do well too. A couple of players from the Wild that I liked ended up on the Vegas team so it would be cool to see them do well. It would be amazing if a new team won the cup on their first year.

Nothing wrong with beating all the teams in your division. I am sure playing up was intimidating for T. Well, let him focus on baseball. I think Little League is a bit more fair.

Thanks. It really does make you wonder if they care about all of their promises and mission statements, if ‘total player development’ is really true or not. I want him to try again, but I’m a little soured by all of it the more I think about it. We’ll see.

You’re right though, time to concentrate on summertime fun and the remaining 3 weeks of baseball. :)

True. Player development is impossible if you potentially can get cut every 6 months. They should have helped him with his nerves. But yeah, have him focus on baseball now. Hope he had a good time at the swim club today.

Cool, what type?

Edit: nevermind, I just read your other post. It really does sound like you NEED a new car. I hope you are able to get a good deal.
Change of plans, going to look at the Civic as well. My dad suggested leasing and then getting a nicer car in a few years when I'm making more money. I was looking at the Civic's leasing deals, and they were fantastic.

Of course, he suggested the Buick Encore and then was rather irritated when I took his idea and applied it towards Honda's because he's eternally a GM man...

Insane, isn't it?! Back in the day for me, it cost more than 25 cents a string, but prices are always higher up here in the North. But it wasn't anything outrageous, and probably something like 75 cents a string, at the lowest point that I can recall. And yes, it always included the shoes as well.

Heck, my parents were in bowling leagues years ago in our town, and they probably spent $25.00 for an entire season (probably a package deal for league players). They played with 6 other couples, and had two lanes reserved for them every week. (They did have their own bowling shoes, because they went so often.)

The $0.25 was with his UT student discount (which he always managed to get for me too, even though I wasn't a student - but, I'm pretty sure it was still only $0.50 for non-students), but, I do remember it covering the shoes, too. This was in the early 80's.
I just checked, and the Texas Union alley now charges (depending on day of the week) $2-$3/game for students, $3-$4/game for non-students...and, they now charge $2 for shoe rental. :bored:;)

And yes, I remember my folks being in a bowling league for about a year for the 18 mos. we lived in Huntsville, AL, and then for the first few years we lived San Jose, CA.
Then, my mom was in a league for several
years here in Austin, a while back.
Then, my pop started bowling again a few years ago, every Monday night, with some buddies from church...guess where my 85-year-old pop is right now...?!!!!! :hilarious:
He usually gets home around 9p. :)

And, we used to bowl with our kiddos about 4-6 times/year, but, it's been a few years...we need to pick that back up again, 'cause we always had a blast...!!!!!!! :joyfull::)
