Yup all nonessential people until further notice. So no cafeteria or cleaning people
Oh dear. How hurtful that they label those people to be nonessential.

I started this out much differently then I remembered the Religion and Politics are not appreciated here, and rightfully so. Suffice it to say that I refuse to fall backwards into long past motivations for traditions in this day and age. It is what we feel individually that counts and that acting out tradition gesture isn't the same as living the misguided messages. I go to WDW, but, I do not think Mickey is a deity of any sort or that Walt Disney died because his halo was to tight or by trying to convince myself that Disney "currently" isn't really just a huge corporation whose sole purpose is to make boatloads of money by entertaining us. It boils down to getting excited by college students in a rodents costume because it's fun and what many want to do, not because of what once was the motivation for it's existence. You are not alone. There are not many who actually realize the history and symbolism of many things they are participating in. As you said wedding traditions as being anything other then a ceremony acted out. Genuinely many do not know what the long history of what it symbolizes. I'm Catholic. Many do not understand how deeply rich Catholicism is in history, tradition and symbolism. Church have not bended in these rules for Woman very often over 100s and 100s of years, as example a woman can not enter the Priesthood. Entire masses rich with symbolism.
I grasp get what being covered as a child was, I look at it as my brainwashing years. My Nuns would have knocked me to Kingdom Come if I dared to say NO! I'm not wearing that beanie on my head or not wearing those gloves to mass or if I took them off during Mass, it would have not been pretty. So many of Catholic customs for Woman mirror those of Eastern and Middle Eastern Cultures. I was in my early 20s when I took several Woman's studies courses and it was very enlightening to see the History behind the Wedding Ceremony still being executed today by many.
Groundhogs Day!!!Two weeks from today I fly down in the evening.![]()
I am happy you are employed. I'm happy it will bring more money. I will be happier for you when you are where your heart leads you here or overseas. Wish only the best for you.
My DD started Grad School this week. She is doing well in her career but she knows in her case she needs her masters to move forward. She has chosen one of the most academically challenging master programs as her goal. Of Course! She never took any easy road. The field qualifications have 900,000 deficit in candidates qualified to even apply to a career that will not disappear like My Space did. I'm proud of her desire to become more educated and me I take a deep breath. Here we go again. She is an 'all in' or 'out' type of person. It should be an interesting couple of years as she powers through all this. This is the kid that double majored and minored in 3.5 years cause she could do all that for the same tuition. Love her dearly but watching her makes me so tired.
I will send good karma for this position your future. *pixie dust* Want only the best for ya.![]()
Double like. And I'm definitely not bringing religion into here because it isn't supposed to be discussed here, but I'm beginning to think I'm the only non-Catholic person in this thread. It sure has been talked about a lot lately.I started this out much differently then I remembered the Religion and Politics are not appreciated here, and rightfully so. Aww, so cute.
Sign me up to the non-catholic gang. Methodism is the prevalent religion over here so i became an atheist.Double like. Yep...the way I see it, people are going to have an opinion no matter what you do, so best just to do what's right for you and ignore all the know-it-alls. My mom didn't have a choice...as a single mom, she HAD to have a job (well...3 or 4) and she had to work so so hard. I never wanted to have to do that. IF I had to work, I wanted it to be one job, and I didn't want to have to ask for hand-me-downs and clip coupons. So I went to college so I would have an education in case things didn't work out. But my best friend never went to college and she got a really good job as a personal sales rep making more than I ever would have as a teacher. And then she moved to Australia and had to give the job up. But she worked AND had kids. I have one friend who decided she wasn't cut out to be a mom, and I have other friends who had jobs until they had kids and then stayed home. I work on a minimal basis, but one of us is home when the kids are. It depends on how you want to do it and what suits you.Yes, I agree 100%. There is nothing wrong with going to college and then choosing to be a stay at home mom. After all, you do need to do something in between the turning 18 part of your life and birthing children, and once a stay at home mom doesn't always mean stay at home mom. A lot of women, and men, take time off to raise their kids, and a lot don't. It's no one's business but their own.
My mom never went to college, but she was a stay at home mom. It made sense. They would about break even putting me in daycare verses her staying home, and she wanted to be home with me. She intended to go back when I was in school, but then she had my brother and that didn't happen. It was great growing up with my mom at home, but I'm not sure I could do the same thing; I'm not sure I even want kids. But yet it seems you get the opposite end, where if you don't stay home, people tell you that you don't care about your children, when that simply isn't true either. Funny how people seem to think they know what's best for everyone else instead of letting people decide for themselves.
In some other countries they wear their wedding rings on their right hands
But I'm with you. Especially when the rings are ornate or heavy, they're just a bother. I have a plain silver band I bought for hiking trips and I wear that much more than my actual wedding ring.
Sympathy like. Schools here just had a 2 hour delay probably to make sure the roads were nice and clean. I know that schools by where dh works that is 32 miles as the crow flies had closed schools today. We had about 5 inches in total start to finish. Luckily warm up starts tomorrow.
But on the other hand...it only has the importance YOU give it. That may be the history of wearing a veil, but that doesn't mean it has the same significance to ME, because that's now how I viewed it. Just like word usage...people here use English swear words all the time. It has no significance to them in a different language, while Dutch swear words mean much more to them and would mean nothing to most Americans. The connotation is attached to your personal feelings about it, which differ from person to person. You have that history with the Catholic church that is a bad memory for you...I, growing up in the Lutheran church, have no such experiences and it doesn't mean the same thing to me that i might to you. By choosing to wear a veil, I'm not choosing to be a possession of my husband's. That's the definition YOU have for it based on your personal experiences and teachings. But that's not my definition. In China, brides wear red...that doesn't mean that if I wear red on my wedding day I'm Chinese, nor does it mean I believe what the Chinese believe about weddings. That's why it's so important not to judge someone for their choice...you don't know why they chose that...the significance it has to them. Maybe their mom has passed and the bride is wearing her mother's veil to feel like her mother is there with her on her wedding day. Maybe she has Alopecia and just wants to cover her bald spots. Maybe she actually believes that she will be her husband's possession. But that's up to HER what significance it has for her and how she feels about it.You are not alone. There are not many who actually realize the history and symbolism of many things they are participating in. As you said wedding traditions as being anything other then a ceremony acted out. I'm not Catholic either, but given what a culture Catholicism has, I kind of don't expect people to tiptoe around the fact that they're Catholic.Double like. He didn't., he wore a hunter green archer outfit with cloak. We had planned to wear these to the local RenFairs (which we did) and wanted something that matched. My mom made my dress and his outfit.
Yes, the groundhog will declare he saw his shadow and I will escape the predicted winterGroundhogs Day!!!![]()
I need to move firewood. Any volunteers?![]()
Is he the one that does that commercial for Geico?
That doesn't go away quick either. I was married for 29 years. The band was gold with diagonal groves. The groves were basically worn off. I Divorced 18 years ago and I can still see where that ring sat on my finger all those years. For 10 or so of those years it was very prominent, not so much today but I can still see where it was.Yep, as you might have guessed, we went pretty traditional with the rings.
She has yellow gold and diamonds, and I have a yellow gold band, although she wanted me to have something other than a plain band.
But, the original detail it had is less than when it was new, of course (hey, it's been 29+ years!).
My ring on, and my ring off...

Either way, I'm marked for life and I'm more than OK with that...!!!!!!!![]()
That feeling when the non-American is more in touch with the American news than you are...I think @figmentfan423 means Mr Figgy won't be affected by your countries shutdown at midnight.

Oh dear. How hurtful that they label those people to be nonessential. My heart goes out to those folks. Everyone's job is important. One thing I like about where I work is that everyone is called "essential" and the rules apply to all. Everyone from the top medical officer down the line--everyone--is expected to come in for work, because they realize that it is the TEAM that makes everything flow smoothly.
