I remember years ago when I Had earned some money crocheting. I opened up a checking account at the bank in my name and I would want to cash a check at the grocery store. They would want ID. Silly me. I didn't have a State ID or a credit card, so I was denied. First I got the ID, and then I applied for a credit card in my name. Yes, I had to put all of my husband's info on the application, because I have not worked outside the home my entire married life. Marshall Field's in Chicago gave me my first credit card, and Discover gave me my first bank credit card. All these many years later, I now have my own cards, and my own credit score, which is sometimes better than my husband's. I pay off my cards each month, and don't carry balance. We even put our new car in my name last year. Makes me feel good. Sure it's all money that my husband earns, but we both manage separate checking accounts. I manage my cards, and he manages his. Technically the checking accounts are joint for security purposes, but i don't touch his, and he doesn't touch mine. Most all of the house expenses come from my accounts, and my husband pays a very small share of things from him. It's a system that evolved over these many years and it works pretty well.
